They do. That's why if you look at a starter fit now, you'll think "what was CCP thinking, there is so much extra CPU/PG, this suit could be a lot better". At least, that's what I thought when I remade one for $hits and giggles.

As a new player I'd listen to what someone else said and not skill into anything until a guaranteed respec comes for 1.8. As for going FOTM if you want to be respected carve you're own path with whatever you really desire to play with.
As for what class is easiest to skill into, personally I'd say the assault class. I'm usually near the top in kills running an adv assault suit, adv gun, standard secondary, proto damage mods, basic armor and shielding and an adv equipment. This is not hard to get, I'd say two weeks or three weeks maybe if you don't spend any sp foolishly.
Heavies would be the next easier thing to skill into but it requires more SP for the suits and guns which is why I believe it will take longer plus heavies rely heavily on the support of a squad. The assault you can run around and support yourself a little with your own equipment.
Scouts and Logis are the hardest to skill into because they require so many different skills to be truly viable. Scouts need proto dampeners just to be viable to play at a high level as well as everything listed for an assault and logis need good equipment and the ability to survive.
If I were you'd I'd skill into nothing and just stack my SP until 1.8. Play some faction warfare and use the LP to try out suits and guns. |

Whatever the multiplier is, you simply multiply each level cost by that value. So a x4 skill for example would take 1,243,680 SP to max out. Something super important to note is that the SP cost to go from level 0 to level 4 added up is the same exact SP cost to go from level 4 to level 5. This is why you may hear from some people not to get anything to level 5 unless you absolutely need to, for instance taking your dropsuit skill to level 5 to use prototype variants or a weapon operations to level 5 so you can unlock the weapon proficiency skill.

You can create a second and third character as an alt and I believe back in the closed beta CCP allowed them to gain passive points as well, but currently you cannot. You can still log into them every day to get the log in bonus, but that is a very slow progression if its your only source of SP. If there is another account on your PS3 however and that account has a character on Dust then it will receive passive skill points (one of the many reason people suggest that CCP simply allow our two given alts to receive passive SP).
Good thinking. Do I need more than one character? Is it better to use one or switch to a another after the skill points start to trickle? Having more than one character is good if you want to test something out without spending any SP on your main character. Then there's also the use of alternate characters in meta-gaming such as spying and whatnot. Honestly if you know what you want to do then you don't really need a second character. And if you plan on capping out a second character every week after you cap out your main, consider the following. Say you get 6000 SP a match so it takes you about 30 matches to cap out. You can then go to play 30 matches on your second character, or you can play 30 more matches on your main character and get 1,000 SP per match meaning an extra 30,000 SP that week. It may not sound like much, but over the long haul it can be quite substantial. Though I honestly can't imagine anyone playing 60 matches a week regularly.

The best thing is to get your dropsuit upgrades done(Shield, Armor, core, electronics, and engineering) these will be you most important in survivability and fitting you dropsuits with good gear when you chose your dropsuit, weapons, equipment. Now under you armor and shield upgrades are you choices of armor plates/repairs, shield extenders/regulators/and energizers. you don't want to skill those till you decide what suit you want., well maybe not the armour reps because I use one on every suit I disagree with Ryno(?) I would not worry about handheld weapon upgrades( gives you damage modules) to start with depending on your suit I would worry about what I listed above Just my opinion. The core skills are part of my clone right? Do they apply to all of my load-outs? Yes. Basically just go to the skill tree and press Triangle on the skill and read the description. If it says some bonus for dropsuits in general (or vehicles in general if you want to go down that route) than that is what people consider a core skill. These include things like Armor Upgrades and Shield Upgrades, as well as Dropsuit Electronics and Dropsuit Engineering (though personally I would only skill into Electronics and Engineering as needed, do the math before hand to see if you need the extra CPU or PG they provide). If the skill says something regarding efficacy of a specific type of module than that will only apply if you are using those modules and as such aren't considered core skills.

Depends on your suit, I personally have a minmatar logi on an alt I stack as much shield extenders/shield rechargers and some armor but more armor reps, now as you like to flank you would want as much shield or damage( your high slots) and dampening(your low slots) so you have some hp but it makes it harder to be scanned. This would work with scouts as they are naturally fast and hard to scan, making them the best at flanking, the other choice in my opinion is minmatar logi. they are fast and you have 2 low slots and two high slots at STD. And you can fit scanner, RE's, and an uplink.

This should help. It's well written and informative. Also, definitely spec into dropsuit upgrades, at the very least, armor and shield. You'll find they make you quite a bit less squishy. It won't be god mode, but it definitely helps.
I would agree that logi, at least by placing links and hives in the beginning, is a great way to earn WP/SP. I would get adv links and hives and throw them in hidden/high spots and soak up the WP. You'll probably need to fly them up there, and to that effect, I would say buy some militia dropships and teach yourself to fly. I personally found the Gorgon easier to learn on, but some people prefer the Viper. Just take it up high and tool around till you get the hang of it. You will crash (probably a lot) and burn through a bit of ISK, but knowing how to fly is worth it and the MLT dropships aren't expensive.
Beyond that, just try LP gear out before you spec into anything. That way, you aren't wasting your SP into something you won't use. |

The community has been getting on CCP about the tutorial for a while now.
Thinking outside the box, flanking, best at close to mid range... these are indicators of a scout. This class is instant hard mode but if you get the hang of it you will find a massive amount of pleasure out of it.
I applaud you for coming to the forums and asking questions. Not enough blue berries (originally described a player that is not in your immediate squad but the definition has slowly warped to any new player or poorly skilled player) come to the forums for help even though the community is more than happy to lend a helping hand.
A few recommendations:
Join an academy: There are corporations out there that are none-competitive and focuses solely on training players to be the best that they can be. Spend SP on core skills: Dropsuit core upgrades, Electronics, engineering, shields (at least lv 3), armor (at least lv 3), biotics(light frames/scouts reap the most benefit out of this), explosives (at least lv 3), and relevant weapon ops (light, heavy, sidearm). This will insure that no matter what path you choose you will have the basics out of the way (every path benefits from these skills).
[Just throwing this out there] Dragon-Empire is always accepting new members. We are happy to help the new players both by giving advice and (if you are dedicated) financially.

This might be a dumb question but are shield extenders better than the passive skill? It looks like I can get more shields out of the extenders for less SP. The bonus is way less except for on the Amarr heavy, sentinel, and commando frames. Are these the only heavies presently? The moving speeds seem bad. Does the HP make up for that?

Goregasm Elite wrote:Aero Yassavi wrote:Dust community, why haven't you given this guy a straight answer yet? Goregasm Elite, the answer to your question is that no play style allows the fastest character progression to any significant degree. The reason behind this is that there are three ways to gain skill points, 1. Passively 2. Daily log-ins 3. Actively Obviously no matter what play style you choose, the amount of points you gain passively and through logging in are the same. Now the thing to consider with actively gaining skill points is how those points are rewarded. The answer is simple Active skill points rewarded = (Seconds spent in battle x 5) + (warpoints earned x 1) Now let's say your typical skirmish match lasts 15 minutes. That is 900 seconds, meaning 4500 SP just from that part of of the equation alone. Now as you can see quite clearly, whether you gain 500 WP, 1000 WP, or 2000 WP a match, most your points are coming from simply participating (unfortunately, depending on who you ask). So my advice to you is don't pick a role based on how fast you can gain SP, but rather pick a role on what you think is fun. P.S. Passive points are rewarded 1,000 an hour, so 24,000 a day and 168,000 a week. Login in at max is 6,000 a day so 42,000 a week. Active points are rewarded up to 190,400 a week. After you hit the active cap for the week you can still earn up to 1,000 WP. Ignoring any points gained after hitting the cap, you gain 400,400 SP a week. Highly educational. After the cap those WP = SP? Also there are two other slots for creating characters, I notice they do not receive passive skill point gain. Can I use these for something or are they just for show? Additional characters on the same PSN are best used for creating alts to use initial SP to try weapons or dropsuits before spending SP on your main account.
I would recommend starting another PSN and character to sit and gather passive SP for the future. Almost everyone who sticks around awhile creates an alt eventually to try a different play style, get a jump on it now.
Also, Aero is exactly right, there is no "One Ring". What you do well with is typically what you enjoy and what will keep you playing to enjoy all that SP.
Also, was 10,000,000 a friggin typo! If not, try alot of militia items before you blow all that SP on something you'll hate.
Not new, just new to you.

But the benefit of Dropsuit Shield Upgrades is that once you have it you spend no ISK, don't need to use any CPU or PG on your dropsuit, and it applies to all the dropsuits you will ever use. Yes the actual shield extenders will give you more shield up front though. Ideally you want both shield upgrades and shield extenders if you are aiming to be a shield based unit.

All that makes me think scout - but it take a little longer to get the skills a scout needs to be competetive compared to most others.
Especially with 1.8 (relatively major update im sure you are aware by now) I'd just concentrate on core skills (shield, Armor, Biotics).
Don't bother investing in dropsuit command until you are sure about what playstyle you prefer and undersand which suit is going to help you achive it the best. Use MLT meds/lights/heavies to get a feel for which direction you prefer.
When it comes to modules and weapons just try the milita version or just invest in the first level to use the STD version for improved fitting.
Invest in fitting skills when you realise you don't have enough CPU/PG for a specific fit you want to try. Fitting skills are never a waste, but quite SP intensive and early on there will be plenty of passive skills that will serve your needs in the here and now.
If it is CPU you need, don't forget about light weapons, sidearm and explosives skills - when you just need 1-2 CPU these will often make a better early SP investment than electronics lv3/4 for example. If its PG you need, the relatively expensive Engineering skill is your best (pretty much only) option. Dropsuit Core Upgrades, upgrades both PG/CPU a tiny amount - it's cheap, but you pretty much have to get lv5 to see much significant difference for your PG especially.
Uplinks are good for amassing WP for that extra ISK/SP and learning to place them is good for learning maps as well as player/squad behaviour. Compared to games like CoD or Battlefield, there are a lot of approaches to how you play - especially if you're the type of person who likes to exploit weaknesses in both load out and personality, it's worth paying attention to how allies and enemies play and fit their mercs - you might also pick up a few ideas you might want to try out yourself.
This is all IMHO anyway.
PS sign up for Dus University when you start and don't be afraid to post questions in the rookie training grounds (try searching first, but I find some technical/math stuff is a bit out of date).

In 1.8 sentinels will have damage resistance and commandos will have a damage bonus.
The caldari variants benefit the most from the shield skill but yes, shield extenders do infact give more then the shield skill.
The shield extender skill will increase the effects of all shield extenders as well.
Be carful though, shield tanking is good for hit and run but is not very effective for sustained fights.

Yes, the passive skill eats the SP up, but it will apply to every suit without taking up a fitting slot, CPU/PG, or costing you ISK on each suit. You can do both eventually or use the high slot (where extenders go) for other things like damage mods. |

I haven't tried Dust yet. I want to not suck. You guys are filling in so much info that I need. How come the game designers do not include this in a tutorial? If you plan on flanking, the scout may be for you, or at least a suit with a few lot slots for profile dampaners.
The scout is not gonna allow you to 1v1 in a straight up fight, but it will allow you to get behind someone and murder them. At higher levels the scout can detect enemies passively and avoid almost all active scanners. However, they require a good amount of sp before that and they are the easiest suit to kill.
A Gallente assault suit may help you here, it has the most low slots of any assault suit, so you can fit a profile damp or 2 and still be able to fight.
Assault suits are general all around suits, designed to be at the front line. They are self reliant, but work better in a group.
I'd say to stick with medium frame suits for now, and try each race before putting any sp into a suit.
The assaults will be changing in 1.8 but for now they work like this:
Amarr
The highest base ehp and the slowest speed, they also have the least slots but the most CPU/PG. So while they can't fit more mods, they can fit better ones. They have even slot lay out at 3 highs, 3 lows at Proto.
They also get bonuses to laser weapons. And have a pretty equal shield and armour set up. Meant for mid range fighting.
Caldari
Highest shields, lowest armour. 2nd fastest suit, 2nd most high slots. They also tie for lowest CPU/PG, though they are usually lack for CPU since they relay on high slots for everything. At Proto, they have 4 highs, 3 lows.
They get bonuses to shield extenders and will most likely get bonuses to rail tech. Meant to be long range figheters.
Gallente
The opposite of Caldari. Highest armour, lowest shields. 2nd slowest suit, most low slots. Same CPU/PG of a Caldari suit. They have the lowest shield regain and should be getting natural armour regain in 1.8 of 2hp per sec.
They get a bonus to fitting hybrid weapons and will most likely get a bonus to blaster tech in 1.8. They are meant to be the close range fighter.
Minmatar
Least ehp, fastest assault suit. Most highs, least lows. 5 highs, 2 lows. They have a natural armour regain of 1hp per sec. They also have the 2nd highest CPU/PG.
They get a bonus to sidearm ammo, which will probably be changed in 1.8. They are meant to be hard hitters, but not meant to take a punch. Good at close to mid range.
Take this with a grain of salt, it's just my take on the suits. I'm also kind of bias toward the GalAssault.

Come 1.8 (March release) all heavy suits (Sentinel and Commando) will be released. Actively, yes, extenders give you more HP usually, but, passively, all suits get better. Plus, the negatives (Shield extenders increasing delay on recharge, armor making you slower) are not present with passive. Again, I'd wait, max out your passives 'til Saber or Logibro or one of our other overlords says yay or nay to repsecs.

I am putting Shields, Armor, CPU, PG, and Biotics up to 5. It looks like I can still get the modules for shield and armor when I learn more. Can someone explain Profile? I think lower is better. What about precision? how does that work?

lower IS better.
In order to passively scan an enemy your precision has to be lower then there profile so again lower IS better.
If you are going to be a heavy then just ignore profile. Range and precision is always an option though.

TBH profile, range, and precision are considered Core skills if you are a scout/light frame.

I would put a couple of levels into all three:range, precision enhancement, and dampening. Simply because, at low levels, they don't take a whole lot of SP and I would say it's worth it. I wouldn't put much more than that into it early on, unless you want to be a scout. This however is my personal opinion. Those skills will make red dots pop up on your radar more often and make you pop up on theirs less, so if you think that will make a significant difference in your ability to play the game, by all means, spec more into them. |

Logistics will easily earn you points. Get points for repping, droplink usage, nanohive usage etc.
You don't even have to kill people, just tag along the other slayers and you'll earn a shitload of warpoints (that translates into skillpoints). |
