A lot of people will tell you to go for the FoTM.
Don't listen.
Save your SP till we find out about the next update. We should be getting a blog in a week or so and the update shortly after.
I believe the system goes:
Cores to 3
Suit
Weapon
There is no right suit to use(though most will say to go for a Cal or Gal Logi) or right weapon(though most people will say RR/CR/ScR or some jerks will say the AR)
Stick with MLT suits and throw a point or two into a few weapons to test the waters. With the login bonus I think you get a extra 42,000 sp a week(after maxing it out in the 7th day) so consider that a little bonus to you around with some weapons.
Give us a idea of what your play style is, what you have tried and what you wanna try to do overall.
Do you intend to stick to the ground?
Vehicles?
Are you a fan of armour?
Shields?
Reps?
Would you rather sneak around?
Defend a point?
Be a force multiplier?

I have played Call of Duty and Battlefield. I usually join a clan and work with my team. A few can overcome many if we all have the same focus. I would say I am best close to mid range. I have a lot of tricks that seem to hold true to most games. 1 on 1 I can usually kill my opponent. Thinking outside the box has always worked best for me. Oh flanking is my bread and butter. I haven't tried Dust yet. I want to not suck. You guys are filling in so much info that I need. How come the game designers do not include this in a tutorial? If you plan on flanking, the scout may be for you, or at least a suit with a few lot slots for profile dampaners.
The scout is not gonna allow you to 1v1 in a straight up fight, but it will allow you to get behind someone and murder them. At higher levels the scout can detect enemies passively and avoid almost all active scanners. However, they require a good amount of sp before that and they are the easiest suit to kill.
A Gallente assault suit may help you here, it has the most low slots of any assault suit, so you can fit a profile damp or 2 and still be able to fight.
Assault suits are general all around suits, designed to be at the front line. They are self reliant, but work better in a group.
I'd say to stick with medium frame suits for now, and try each race before putting any sp into a suit.
The assaults will be changing in 1.8 but for now they work like this:
Amarr
The highest base ehp and the slowest speed, they also have the least slots but the most CPU/PG. So while they can't fit more mods, they can fit better ones. They have even slot lay out at 3 highs, 3 lows at Proto.
They also get bonuses to laser weapons. And have a pretty equal shield and armour set up. Meant for mid range fighting.
Caldari
Highest shields, lowest armour. 2nd fastest suit, 2nd most high slots. They also tie for lowest CPU/PG, though they are usually lack for CPU since they relay on high slots for everything. At Proto, they have 4 highs, 3 lows.
They get bonuses to shield extenders and will most likely get bonuses to rail tech. Meant to be long range figheters.
Gallente
The opposite of Caldari. Highest armour, lowest shields. 2nd slowest suit, most low slots. Same CPU/PG of a Caldari suit. They have the lowest shield regain and should be getting natural armour regain in 1.8 of 2hp per sec.
They get a bonus to fitting hybrid weapons and will most likely get a bonus to blaster tech in 1.8. They are meant to be the close range fighter.
Minmatar
Least ehp, fastest assault suit. Most highs, least lows. 5 highs, 2 lows. They have a natural armour regain of 1hp per sec. They also have the 2nd highest CPU/PG.
They get a bonus to sidearm ammo, which will probably be changed in 1.8. They are meant to be hard hitters, but not meant to take a punch. Good at close to mid range.
Take this with a grain of salt, it's just my take on the suits. I'm also kind of bias toward the GalAssault.
