Close combat gives people the opportunity to attack tank's weak points. So I wouldn't expect a nova knife to be effective against the main armour hull, but if you're standing on a tank surely you could do serious damage with an energy blade if you...

They are blades wreathed in plasma. It's very common in scifi for energy swords to easily cut through armour, or just about anything. See WH40k (most similar), Star Wars, Evangelion, StarCraft etc.
