OP - Agreed. It's like this with LAV's and Dropships too.. illogically. Engineers in Dust world like to make technology that exposes it's passengers, gunners and pilots for NO logical reason. If you can kill a gunner without killing the vehicle...

They already did this last patch. Too much. Now it's really difficult to land with any quickness and pick up people without doing serious damage. These aren't ships made of eggshells here, they can be built to withstand some impact damage.

If you're a shield tank driver, max resist modules. Basically anything that gets you better at making more SP per game. Dying less, killing/doing more. Games with a positive KDR get you better isk/sp per game typically. I dont' think any support ...
