Seriously, it's an incredible difference. I feel like I've been missing out on some of the best parts of this game so far. Probably sounds even better with proper surround sound cranked up.
I'm using Sony Pulse elites which should work on the PS4. If anyone has been considering getting a decent headset I strongly recommend you go for it.

Sound is often neglected. I hook mine up to my PC speaks via the Composite cable, you can push the Audio out in the PS3 settings. |

Btw, I personally think CCP did a great job on the sound- this is the only game where I feel that having your volume up matters. I can see with my ears as well as my eyes. |

I got the same impression. I cant play TV loud because of my family, so I figured I'd get a pair of head phones. I figured I'd go with Sony Pulse since it's exactly for PS3. And yes, what a difference. I feel like I am playing a different game. I remember reading some dev posts on sound engineering and I thought they were smoking something because the game used to sound like some sonic pollution. Now using the headphones I actually do appreciate unique sound signatures of weapons and vehicles. Also the background music is that much more immersive. To ppl who are playing w/o good sound - turns out you are missing out on a huge part of the game. |

The sound makes a huge difference, saved myself from many a misfortune by being able to hear someone trying to sneak up on me. Also is nice to be able to figure out where a vehicle is coming in from. It does make the random silent vehicle bug a bit obnoxious, but yeah, the sound is very well done and I love my headset for it. |

The audio is very clean overall and pans the room very good. As in its engineered well. Except it on ocassion bugs mute certain aspects randomly. I was just on a cannon and it made no noise at all. The ambient sounds were muffled to. Still blasted 3 nubs tho. I mostly use T Beaches for comms and they sound great, able to hear subtle sounds well. When theres no one home I can crank 7.2 channel stereo and it truly is amazing with a Denon Avr 5800(170x7 per channel). I was thumping to some serious bass this game has. Its involving with 8 10 inch drivers + 2 12 inch subs, Fully Loaded horns scream as laser shots rip the air. Also tanks and dropships come alive with high volume. They sound way cool and realistic. The intro music was really awesome in surround mode, circling the room, quite trippy! And yes, waaaaay to loud! |

The sound is not bad, but Dust has nothing on bf3 when it comes to the headphone department. Bf3's sound is by far the best I have heard in a shooter. CCP should aim at one day getting it to that level. I do have to say the sound is much better on Dust than it used to be. |

I do not recommend the Pulse headset. I am a very careful user, I never drop my stuff, and yet the headset still gave me a problems only a month after I bought it. It's still working, but my left ear cup started having a higher volume than my right ear cup. I don't know what did it, but it's fixed now. And I know it wasn't my ears because I asked a lot of friends and they all told me they hear the difference.
It also stopped connecting to the wireless dongle, so I had to download some software from the American PS STORE (Why they don't have it for the UK, I have no idea) which allows me to tweak the headset and restore it to factory defaults. I restored it to factory defaults and so far so good.
Just don't buy it, it's not worth the headache at this price point. |

It just sounds really canned. A lot of generic shooter from the 90s choices, coupled with a bit too much compression. |

Use the same headset and yes, it's wonderful to use. The headset really helps with the wee tiny sounds. Only big deal for me is that I have very rowdy squads as a squad leader. So half of the time I'm hearing more swears and other gibberish than actual gunfire! |

I absolutely agree - I never play FPSs without a headset, the situational awareness is just so much better with them than without. This is particularly valuable when I'm playing a fragile scout, which is 99.7% of the time.
As for Dust in particular, I think the sound is overall good. There are some bugs with disappearing audio that still needs fixing, and I could wish for slightly louder footsteps. Or other movement noises, like rustling of armor (obviously louder the heavier the suit). Perhaps even introduce a skill for silencing armor/footsteps. |

I'd have to agree with baal here. I to use the Sony Pulse and find the Audio to be somewhat "cartoony" and occasionally off direction.
Not using this as an opportunity to bash the game but in comparison to other Top FPS titles the fidelity is lacking, I'd almost go as far as to say severely lacking. One thing I notice is the volume of gunfire, vehicles etc does not scale well with distance. It's almost as though you either hear it or you don't. While there is some variation in volume based on range it's not nearly as clearly defined as in BF3 for example. Also I find the indoor echo effects to be....well TBH...Disgusting. Like somebody put a cheap cell phone speaker in a tin can disgusting. On top of that every enclosed space in the game that produces an echo effect does so at the exact same volume and frequency of reverberation.
To the OP, Is this the first and only game you've used a headset with? If so, that could be why it seems so impressive. I would encourage you to try out BF3, or really anyone looking for a truly immersive auditory experience.

Yeah first game with headset. I've never actually played BF3. Ill go buy a cheap copy on your advice. Thinking about what you're saying I had thought it was just the fact I'm using a headset and not surround sound. I do notice direction and distance to be off but just attributed that to the lack of proper surround. If it could be better I'd be even happier. |

Yeah there's specifically a SFX setting for the AI woman. I have it at like 20 and it's plenty loud and about the volume of people on comms. I really don't get why that woman is practically screaming at anything above 20. |

I was really surprised by all of the positive feedback here about the sound design. This game really is pretty far behind most other "AAA" games I've played in terms of quality and variety. I mean, I'm not gonna sit and nitpick at it, but it's mediocre at best.

Yeah, that explains a lot actually.
Try playing a myriad of other PS3 titles with the headset, and then come back to Dust 514. I think you'll be surprised at how the jump in quality from listening to Dust 514 on regular speakers vs Dust 514 on a headset is similar to listening to Dust 514 on a headset vs listening to most other games on a headset.
Or maybe, don't do that at all. That way it doesn't ruin the sound design of Dust 514 for you. |

This thread made my whole week! Thanks everyone! The sound team is pretty small and we worked our butts off getting this stuff in so it really means a lot to us.
Also as for BF3, I have a lot of respect for the sound team on that game. They went out to the field to play with weapons and vehicles and hear how they sound at different distances, and you can hear the realism and clarity in the overall sound. Our approach was a lot different than theirs though, since we didn't care about realism (though we do care about the lore of how the weapons work). We also wanted to be able easily tell the difference between different types of weapons, and only play sounds from things happening in game. The distance reverb we add to sounds was inspired by BF3. |

Were you guys responsible for the EVIL yet amazing sound of the LAV engines? I know everyone hates murder taxis but they sound so great.

Your approach is something I can respect a lot. To that end, I do have a question regarding the way blasters currently sound.
In Eve they emit a much softer scifi'ish sound that doesn't assault the ears as much as play with them. It's somewhat comparable to the way the Covenant plasma rifles in Halo sound. In Dust, all blasters, all the way down to the Gallente Assault Rifle (which is itself, a blaster) has more of a direct BANG! Sound attached to it. It sounds good, but it's difficult to believe that these are the same kinds of weapons at all.
Isn't this somewhat backwards, though? You would think on the starship scale, the sounds would get bigger and more intimidating, and on the smaller handheld scale they would be softer. Instead it seems the exact opposite is true.
To be fair, the small turret blasters actually sound much closer to what I would expect, but both the handheld rifles and large turret variations seem to miss the mark for me somewhat. |

Battlefield has the best sound game I've ever heard and the fact that Dust is even being compared to that is a great compliment in itself.
While Dust still has a long way to go, it has a very solid base. There's a reason that there are not many threads on the forums about the sound of the game. |

I posted my headset revelations in the feedback and request forum about two weeks ago. Maybe it was my thread. If so then my mission was successful.
When I first played with my new headset I was really surprised, like big grin "that sounds so cool" kind of grin.
So again, to anyone that wants the sounds to be an immersive part of the game stereo headsets rock. |

On the good advice of some gentlemen in this thread I went out and bought a copy of BF3. It was absolutely worth the money for the sound experience alone. I am not disappointed.
For me, what really makes BF3 shine is the directionality of sound. I know exactly where things are happening around me all the time. My situational awareness is preternatural while playing. I feel like the Special Forces Day-Walker Vampire unit. It's pretty sweet.
In BF3 the sounds are very organic and realistic. They are intense, engaging and convincing. It is perfect for its genre. While this works wonderfully for that game, I much prefer the ominous synths and pew pew lasers of DUST. I like the dark, electric groans I imagine rumbling up from the belly of starships. I'm captivated by the harsh noise of equipment, and the cascading chips and beeps of computers. Listening to Dust makes me feel (mind you I don't play EVE) as though I'm in New Eden. It fills me with dread and wonder.
I hope one day CCP Earworm and team can bring the panning and whatever else is involved to the level of BF3. It would be close to perfection. |

I gotta agree, although there are 1 or 2 (at most) sounds that sound a little toy like, for the most part the sound is fantastic, and I can't praise it enough,
I went into the pyramid and I could hear gun shots in the background with echo, I have played this game since march last year and that was one of the things I was happiest with, I wear headphones and people are right when they say the sound in this game really brings the game into its own. I have been saved so many times from hearing bullets miss me on the left, while the actual gun was fired from afar behind me at the same time hearing a tank rolling round the corner on my right, I don't need active scanners for that, I have my awareness and the sound has really done its job on that front
If I could be happier it would only be by 2% |

This is something interesting... We, the sound team across Dust and Eve, have talked a lot about unifiying the sounds, making the tech sound consistent across the universe. We're not quite sure about how/when to do this, and it won't be soon. I agree that it doesn't make sense. Some Dust sounds are reworkings of Eve sounds, such as the spawning "decloak" sound. |

Speaking of which (if I may jump in and hijack this thread), could you perchance do something about making dropships sound more directional? I think what's going on is that surround sound only really handles 2 dimensions, so it's hard for me to pinpoint a dropship when it's above me. If there is a tank, LAV, or gunfire, I can easily discern which direction it's coming from, but no dice with dropships. |

Yeah this is definetly a problem. It's a bit hard to solve since we want to seperate the sounds so each vehicle is easily heard (this devblog gives more detail: http://dust514.com/news/blog/2013/02/dust-514-audio-vision-and-principles/), but where the dropship sits in the frequency spectrum makes it hard for your ears to localize it properly. I know exactly what you're talking about and it's important to hear the position of every vehicle. When we get a chance we will revisit the dropship and solve this problem. |

ARE YOU CRAZY???
thats a GOOD thing! its the only thing that keeps dropships alive.
The number of times ive span around looking for a dropship and missed my chance because i didnt just turn towards the sound.
"Fix" this and drop ships are even more kitten'd
Just say its a technological defence that makes it difficult to pinpoint the dropship. it makes sense to me... change the frequency of the engines so they're harder to pinpoint...
