Not using this as an opportunity to bash the game but in comparison to other Top FPS titles the fidelity is lacking, I'd almost go as far as to say severely lacking. One thing I notice is the volume of gunfire, vehicles etc does not scale well with distance. It's almost as though you either hear it or you don't. While there is some variation in volume based on range it's not nearly as clearly defined as in BF3 for example. Also I find the indoor echo effects to be....well TBH...Disgusting. Like somebody put a cheap cell phone speaker in a tin can disgusting. On top of that every enclosed space in the game that produces an echo effect does so at the exact same volume and frequency of reverberation.
To the OP, Is this the first and only game you've used a headset with? If so, that could be why it seems so impressive. I would encourage you to try out BF3, or really anyone looking for a truly immersive auditory experience.
Yeah first game with headset. I've never actually played BF3. Ill go buy a cheap copy on your advice. Thinking about what you're saying I had thought it was just the fact I'm using a headset and not surround sound. I do notice direction and distance to be off but just attributed that to the lack of proper surround. If it could be better I'd be even happier. |

Yeah there's specifically a SFX setting for the AI woman. I have it at like 20 and it's plenty loud and about the volume of people on comms. I really don't get why that woman is practically screaming at anything above 20. |

I was really surprised by all of the positive feedback here about the sound design. This game really is pretty far behind most other "AAA" games I've played in terms of quality and variety. I mean, I'm not gonna sit and nitpick at it, but it's mediocre at best.

Yeah, that explains a lot actually.
Try playing a myriad of other PS3 titles with the headset, and then come back to Dust 514. I think you'll be surprised at how the jump in quality from listening to Dust 514 on regular speakers vs Dust 514 on a headset is similar to listening to Dust 514 on a headset vs listening to most other games on a headset.
Or maybe, don't do that at all. That way it doesn't ruin the sound design of Dust 514 for you. |

Use the same headset and yes, it's wonderful to use. The headset really helps with the wee tiny sounds. Only big deal for me is that I have very rowdy squads as a squad leader. So half of the time I'm hearing more swears and other gibberish than actual gunfire! My favorite part about the headset, Voice volume :D Keep game volume up, voice volume all the way down
Yup, it's wonderful to use on the PS3! Nice for easy fiddling with the volume. Still, I usually have my voice higher since I need to hear intell from my squad mates. |

This thread made my whole week! Thanks everyone! The sound team is pretty small and we worked our butts off getting this stuff in so it really means a lot to us.
Also as for BF3, I have a lot of respect for the sound team on that game. They went out to the field to play with weapons and vehicles and hear how they sound at different distances, and you can hear the realism and clarity in the overall sound. Our approach was a lot different than theirs though, since we didn't care about realism (though we do care about the lore of how the weapons work). We also wanted to be able easily tell the difference between different types of weapons, and only play sounds from things happening in game. The distance reverb we add to sounds was inspired by BF3. |

Dust does sound awesome.......except for 2 things: the sound you make from high falls and nano hives. Nano hivez sound like draculas lair and the falling sounds like your legs just broke.
Nano hives should have more of an alarm or beacon type sound/chirp.
Falling shouldsound like scuffing dirt and rocks. |

Your approach is something I can respect a lot. To that end, I do have a question regarding the way blasters currently sound.
In Eve they emit a much softer scifi'ish sound that doesn't assault the ears as much as play with them. It's somewhat comparable to the way the Covenant plasma rifles in Halo sound. In Dust, all blasters, all the way down to the Gallente Assault Rifle (which is itself, a blaster) has more of a direct BANG! Sound attached to it. It sounds good, but it's difficult to believe that these are the same kinds of weapons at all.
Isn't this somewhat backwards, though? You would think on the starship scale, the sounds would get bigger and more intimidating, and on the smaller handheld scale they would be softer. Instead it seems the exact opposite is true.
To be fair, the small turret blasters actually sound much closer to what I would expect, but both the handheld rifles and large turret variations seem to miss the mark for me somewhat. |

Battlefield has the best sound game I've ever heard and the fact that Dust is even being compared to that is a great compliment in itself.
While Dust still has a long way to go, it has a very solid base. There's a reason that there are not many threads on the forums about the sound of the game. |

I posted my headset revelations in the feedback and request forum about two weeks ago. Maybe it was my thread. If so then my mission was successful.
When I first played with my new headset I was really surprised, like big grin "that sounds so cool" kind of grin.
So again, to anyone that wants the sounds to be an immersive part of the game stereo headsets rock. |

On the good advice of some gentlemen in this thread I went out and bought a copy of BF3. It was absolutely worth the money for the sound experience alone. I am not disappointed.
For me, what really makes BF3 shine is the directionality of sound. I know exactly where things are happening around me all the time. My situational awareness is preternatural while playing. I feel like the Special Forces Day-Walker Vampire unit. It's pretty sweet.
In BF3 the sounds are very organic and realistic. They are intense, engaging and convincing. It is perfect for its genre. While this works wonderfully for that game, I much prefer the ominous synths and pew pew lasers of DUST. I like the dark, electric groans I imagine rumbling up from the belly of starships. I'm captivated by the harsh noise of equipment, and the cascading chips and beeps of computers. Listening to Dust makes me feel (mind you I don't play EVE) as though I'm in New Eden. It fills me with dread and wonder.
I hope one day CCP Earworm and team can bring the panning and whatever else is involved to the level of BF3. It would be close to perfection. |
