Seriously, it's an incredible difference. I feel like I've been missing out on some of the best parts of this game so far. Probably sounds even better with proper surround sound cranked up.
I'm using Sony Pulse elites which should work on the PS4. If anyone has been considering getting a decent headset I strongly recommend you go for it.
To whoever posted a more or less identical thread a few weeks back - thanks! |

Baal Roo wrote:Weird, I completely disagree. I too am using the official Sony surround sound headset, and I find the sound design to be particularly underwhelming and immersion breaking. Interesting. What do you find about it that's immersion breaking? |

Not using this as an opportunity to bash the game but in comparison to other Top FPS titles the fidelity is lacking, I'd almost go as far as to say severely lacking. One thing I notice is the volume of gunfire, vehicles etc does not scale well with distance. It's almost as though you either hear it or you don't. While there is some variation in volume based on range it's not nearly as clearly defined as in BF3 for example. Also I find the indoor echo effects to be....well TBH...Disgusting. Like somebody put a cheap cell phone speaker in a tin can disgusting. On top of that every enclosed space in the game that produces an echo effect does so at the exact same volume and frequency of reverberation.
To the OP, Is this the first and only game you've used a headset with? If so, that could be why it seems so impressive. I would encourage you to try out BF3, or really anyone looking for a truly immersive auditory experience.
Yeah first game with headset. I've never actually played BF3. Ill go buy a cheap copy on your advice. Thinking about what you're saying I had thought it was just the fact I'm using a headset and not surround sound. I do notice direction and distance to be off but just attributed that to the lack of proper surround. If it could be better I'd be even happier. |

On the good advice of some gentlemen in this thread I went out and bought a copy of BF3. It was absolutely worth the money for the sound experience alone. I am not disappointed.
For me, what really makes BF3 shine is the directionality of sound. I know exactly where things are happening around me all the time. My situational awareness is preternatural while playing. I feel like the Special Forces Day-Walker Vampire unit. It's pretty sweet.
In BF3 the sounds are very organic and realistic. They are intense, engaging and convincing. It is perfect for its genre. While this works wonderfully for that game, I much prefer the ominous synths and pew pew lasers of DUST. I like the dark, electric groans I imagine rumbling up from the belly of starships. I'm captivated by the harsh noise of equipment, and the cascading chips and beeps of computers. Listening to Dust makes me feel (mind you I don't play EVE) as though I'm in New Eden. It fills me with dread and wonder.
I hope one day CCP Earworm and team can bring the panning and whatever else is involved to the level of BF3. It would be close to perfection. |
