So I joined my first Corp last night, and I decided to build a squad. I don't know how other corps find squads but in ours I guess you just type into the corp chat channel that you're available for play. Now I figured that I would just be able to highlight their name (within the chat box) and hit "send squad invite" but that didn't seem to be the case. I then figured that I could just find their name in the corp list and invite from there....that didn't work either. Then I realized that I had to go to the squad tab and type their name in (some were too hard to remember in the first place) and then you have to click on a big box, and then click on their name (even though you already typed it in) and then hit OK. That is so ridiculously over complicated for such a simple yet and important feature. And I cannot help to think that this game as of right now reminds me of SOCOM:CONFRONTATION. Now I'm sure there's at least ONE person here who remembers Slant Six and their game S:C. The game released legitimately unfinished, nothing worked, none of the menus were easy to navigate through, it was just an absolute disaster (Slant Six ended up just giving up on the game and I don't even think SOCOM games are ever going to come out again.)
The warning I'm giving to CCP is to not be a Slant Six with Confrontation. Too many times I had seen my brother battling on the forums with 1000+ upvote posts for them to completely ignore what the community wanted. LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE FORUMS. We play this game, not you. In the end, you are the slaves to us. If someone on these forums writes up a great post with ideas and everyone upvotes it and agrees that they love, DO IT. Do not think that you can make this game on your own, do not be cocky. I wish this game the best of luck and I am still having fun on it regardless, but the frustration of sending a squad invite made me recall repressed memories of a game that had potential but plummeted to its doom.
So for one thing to put on your to-do list, can you just make it sending a squad invite a one-touch-button procces? Example: Highlight their name in the corp channel, hit TRIANGLE, the invite is sent.
EDIT: While I'm at it, I might as well just say that the squad leader setting objectives is super tedious as well. The amount of times I tried to hit "capture C" and it said "no valid target" made it seem like a waste to even try. It's like you need a clear line of sight, even though most of the time the objectives are very far away. I would rather have a drop down menu that lists "capture, defend, attack" and then if you click capture, it lists everything captureable in order of importance (points you don't have, CRU's, supply depots, etc). That way I don't have to sit around with my cross hair turned into a shield, hoping no one comes at me, trying to legitimately SNIPE the point with the cross hair.
OR, since there's no need for 4 different commands (you really only need to 2 (attack/cap) and then defend). Why not just make it so if I hold a button with my crosshair on a structure it will either say attack or defend depending on who owns the structure. There's NO NEED for there to be "attack" AND "capture" all it does is complicate things. Just do attack/defend with a quick button. Sigh. |

This has been asked for over and over since squads were first introduced. I'm sure it's one of those fixes that's been written down for future sorting. |

Then it should already be in this game. They say that you can tell a rookie dev from a veteran dev just by how well and easy the menus work and navigate. The fact that they launched the game with the complicating squad inviting shows that they must have thought that this was a viable way. That worries me. |

I have to be on my toes here as ive been warned that i have been trolling, but things from my perspective have not changed in a while and please for the love of pete. i am not trolling. dust is a great game with tons of potential. but i get a general feeling of disconnect whenever i try to make constructive posts. i say things about matters in game that should be looked into then get messages in my email that i am trolling. it's not permitted. now granted i did add in an off topic joke about someone busting "mom" jokes i was warned point taken. trap i should not have fallen into. but as to game issues the build has been the same for a while.
this game has the potential to be huge, but you can't ignore the community...... the game is unbalanced in many ways and this is open beta now so i do not know if that's good or not i know the game will only get better with time patches / fixes but the whole "coming soon" thing is starting to be a real drag. starting to feel like "coming soon" is never going to get here. and if i get flamed for saying i am trolling or banned i am not only stating how i feel about the current gameplay. it's time to get off vacation and address the players before there are none |

I see where you're coming from man, and we are all in the same boat. We are all getting tired of waiting for what has been promised but don't give up hope yet, just be patient for a little bit more. |

See the thing is, is that I don't want this to be a game where you're always waiting on the NEXT patch to be good. "oh yea that's annoying but it's getting fixed in the NEXT patch" and it just goes on and on. CCP has to be ON THE BALL, no time for dilly dallying. And as of right now, the core features are still not present. I don't know, maybe the studio just isn't big enough to really give this game the support it needs? I think this game has great potential as well, and there's a lot of cool features promised. But as of right now, it's just a watered down battlefield or killzone game that runs on probably 20 FPS when there's more than 3 people on the screen. All we have is some skirmish with the PROMISE of cooler game modes and features.
Now don't get me wrong, skirmish is fun, but can't battlefield 3 do everything we have RIGHT NOW but with 10x better graphics, animations, framerate, CONTROL SCHEME (using vehicles is almost pointless the controls and handling is so bad).
Two things this game has is the ISK system where guns and weapons get depleted so the incentive to try hard is always there, and a great progression system. These are both great features but there still needs to be more. I know it's only a "beta" but with a game that's not going to get a big retail release they needa listen to the community.
Riot Games (makers of League of Legends) have the same business model as CCP is using for Dust. League of Legends is the most played E-Sport (I'm not even going to call it a video game, because it's not, it's an E-Sport at this point) and the pro players live in mansions. And since I've played LoL for over 3 years, I can tell you that Riot listens to the community more than anything. Think of it like a restaurant, the chef makes exactly what you tell them to, if the doesn't it gets sent back. When dishes don't get sent back, you stay in business. |

I really HATE HATE HATE to say this, but we need to stop glorifying the Orbital Strike. It's honestly, the same as any killstreak (or more recently, scorestreak) you can find on COD. It's a fun feature, and I like how it's based off of your squads WP, but at the end of the day, you just bring up the mini-map and click the area. It's nowhere near anything never heard of before, |

Of course it's nothing new, that's not what made people glorify it, what made people glorify it is the fact that another person in a different game on a different platform sent that orbital strike(and I know that most OB's are from the warbarge) |

Yes, I agree that inviting people to squads should be easier, and I imagine that CCP will get around to it at some point. The core game features aren't even in yet, after all, they should focus on that before polishing. Having them spend time on the minor stuff will delay the major stuff.

This level of entitlement and arrogance is entirely uncalled for, however. If EVE Online is any indication, CCP knows what they're doing when it comes to game design, and they don't deserve people treating them like a bunch of amateurs. I'm impatient for the more impressive and unique features too, but there's no need to berate them. |

Inviting people to squads is much easier than you make out ... click their name, add to contacts, click squad, invite player, select them and OK.
Yes it could be easier with an invite to squad or invite to 'named chat channel' in the menu when you click on a character, like we have in Eve, but this is still a beta and things still need (and are being) improved. They are listening to community feedback and considering requests even if their time is taken with the need to give their reasons for locking stupid threads rather than responding to worthwhile feedback and requests.
This has been brought up plenty of times before and in the appropriate section of the forum and if we don't see an improved invitations system in place after the next build drops, then I don't doubt you will see massive improvements in other areas that they deemed more important at this time. You can invite people to squads and it's not as convoluted as you make out ... there's certainly no typing needed if you can see them in a chat list as you said you could. |

It's understandably frustrating to have features not working, or that they lack something or that they're not even there. But seriously, I mean seriously - you need more patience. As others have said, this is a BETA - not a full game, just a beta.
Take into account this is CCP's first ever First Person Shooter. Comparing it to other FPS games, always bare in mind, these development companies have had far more experience of perfecting FPS games than CCP does. Honestly, this game hasn't even been in open beta for quarter of a year and people are still complaining, still crying about things.
Do you know how long it takes to make a game good? A long time. CCP are trying their absolute best to make this great for everyone who gets involved. Honestly, I'm no fanboy, but I'll give CCP the benefit of the doubt, why the game is lagging, why graphics have weak rendering and the lack of features at the moment... I'll give CCP... 3, no hell 5 YEARS to make this game amazing. I'm happy to wait, play through all the amazing features and the features that suck. If I think they suck, I will give my opinion, but I would never tell CCP "YOU BETTER NOT KEEP SCREWING UP OR YOU'LL FAIL" - why? What the hell is the point? This game is free 100% free, you're not even forced to buy AUR. I buy all my gear soley with ISK, I'm throwing myself at objectives and racking up a high killcount with low death count.

^^ That comment you made also - is dickish. Seriously, who do you think you are? They've given you a free game, hell, they've made an actual game. Go on, try making one yourself... didn't think so. It's CCP's game, let them do whatever they want to it. I trust they'll make an amazing game. Your attempts of belittling CCP is amusing actually, but in all seriousness. This game is much more suitable for an Eve/Strategist veteran, not much an FPS veteran. |

I might be wrong ... but I don't think you've dug into the EvE universe have you?
I don't play Eve Online. But DUST 514 gave me such a fascination for the New Eden universe that I have gone digging through the lore and events and features and what have you that EvE offers to it's playerbase. If you had done even a bit of digging ... you would have come across the Jita Uprising
For those who already know what I'm talking about, feel free to skip the next paragraph. For everyone else, read on cause this is rather important and proves that CCP listens to the players.
The Jita Riots was a player generated event that occurred after an expansion called Incarna was released. This update included a number of changes that some of the players had been asking for ... but the overall game experience had not improved as it should have. Plus some of the released fixes/content weren't even wanted. Players soon grew irritated at the progression of the game and the lack of attention CCP was giving to the major issues. In protest to this, a mob of roughly 1500+ players grouped up at a major marketplace in the Jita system and proceeded to bomb the everloving **** out of it. CCP caught wind of this and eventually came out with a new expansion called Crucible. This update brought everything back into line and more. I mean literally everything back into line. They tweaked everything from graphics to ship balancing and even brought back a feature called Engine Trails and introduced a new feature called Time Dialation (don't ask me how that works ... I don't understand it much.)
This is footage of the riots from the official EvE Radio while this is the trailer CCP made USING IN GAME FOOTAGE of the Crucible trailer which shows a number of the major fixes they brought on board with it.
There's a few things we need to understand about this series of events. First off EvE was an already established game that was constantly improving. The acts of a few thousand players cause the game to take a massive leap in the right direction. What we have here with DUST 514 however, is a game that ISN'T EVEN FULLY RELEASED YET. You bet your ass there's going to be bugs and you bet your ass there's going to be features missing that they've been promising us since the reveal of the game. Let the Dev team do their work with giving us everything they promised us. If this was a fully released game, then yes I can understand perfectly the frustration of a large chunk of the community and how the current state of the game might even incite another riot. But it isn't, this is a beta, games in beta are games in testing. If you're not happy with being a part of the test crew of a game in development then don't play betas.
Something else you need to keep in mind that their office in Shanghai is smaller and thus has less manpower that the main office in Iceland. So don't expect the patches to come as quickly as they do with EvE.
TL;DR
It's a Beta, get over it, there are going to be bugs, and there are going to be fixes. Give it time and keep faith in the gaming company that gave us the awesomeness that is EvE Online. |

To the OP's underlying point... The user interface is inconsistent, complicated and often does not adhere to PS or established FPS standards. These issues have be raised by the community from the very early days of the closed beta. In CCP's defence, they are trying to make a single interface do triple duty with DS3, Move and KB/M -- not an easy job. None the less, CCP have not addressed those UI issues.
Certainly, CCP have no responsibility to share details of it's plans, the nature of it's testing, or it's reaction to user feedback with the beta player community. However, after repeated versions of "we read all your comments and take them into account" over the months it isn't unreasonable that the community would expect more interaction than it gets.
Regarding the Jita Riots... I see their significance differently. We needed the Jita riots to get CCP's attention. Arguably, if they had been sensitive to the community's issues the riots would not have been necessary. There's an appropriate aphorism, 'Some people don't see the writing on the wall until their back is up against it."

Hello There OP,
I am Iron Wolf and I usually hang out in the public #dust514 channel on IRC and I have some good news for you.
Squad Improvements are not only planned but coming.
Most of these are however pet projects worked on by the developers but hopefully will be in the upcomming 'expansion'
- Invite from any* list without having to add persons to contacts. (subject to design changes)
- Creating a recently played list that only clears on log out.
- Increasing squad size to 6.
- Better notifications.
- Battle sizes being increased to 36 (18 vs 18)
- Increase of corp battle sizes.
- Being able to sort contact lists.
- Better sorting of contact lists
- Mailing lists being implemented and fixed
- No more default squads for lone wolves (thus team chat is default for them)
Despite this thank you for your feed back. |

Well ... isn't that what I implied in my reference to the Riots? In short I tried to say that CCP wasn't paying enough attention to the feedback from the players, the players started a riot, and then finally CCP got back on the ball and delivered in a really good way.
The point I was trying to make however by using the Riots was that we as a player community need to calm down a bit and actually give CCP a chance to deliver. The EvE players had a solid reason to instigate those Riots ... we have no such reason. We need to be patient, and supportive of the good stuff we already have here in our hands, and wait patiently for the other wave of good that's going to be hitting us sometime ... hopefully sooner than later. |

My respects to the OP for a bit of a hijack but I'm not sure where else to post it.
Lonnar, my apologies, I read this
"For everyone else, read on cause this is rather important and proves that CCP listens to the players."
and then you gave the Jita example. I took that to mean you thought Jita was an example of CCP listening. I took exception because I thought Jita was an example of CCP not listening until things got so bad an uprising was necessary. Perhaps we were saying the same thing.
But to the idea that CCP has learned it's lesson and we should bide our time because DUST 514 does not suffer from the same blindness EVE displayed pre-Jita I was struck by what Iron Wolf Saber said in a subsequent post...
"Most of these are however pet projects worked on by the developers but hopefully will be in the upcomming 'expansion'"
While I respect Iron Wolf Saber and his dedication to the community I am saddened to find that users concerns are being addressed through developers pet projects and communicated through chat channels and/or private communications with user community leaders. I would feel better for the game if they were addressed through some more formal process with acknowledgement to the community from the managers of that process that scheduling of the effort was a considered modification to the overall project plan.
It may be I misinterpret the pet project comment. It could be it means "These things were considered, put into the plan, but because of community interest we have moved them up in the schedule." I hope that's the case. If he knows (and cares to) Iron Wolf Saber may be able to clarify. |

I can't give sympathy for a company that is wasting their time trying to get the move to work. The only thing we should do with the move as gamers, is MOVE ON. I had to watch KZ3, Resistance 3, and SOCOM 4 all be inferior games to their past titles because Sony tried to push the Move onto the developers. It takes up too much time and resources to get the move to work well or even work at all. Also, from the looks of it, this game isn't shaping up to be the most "casual" game of all time. I know EVE players who say that EVE was their second job. We've got no time to be running around with motion sensors. |

And notice the very high opinion these community leaders have of themselves and their own opinions because of it, they even talk like they are assistant devs "thank you for your feed back" last time i saw ppl so full of themselves it was 1997 and my best mate discovered the goth channel on IRC. |

Let me restate Public IRC channels.
As for the entire conversation of what the developer wanted feedback on we told him about squads in public games and we went to express that putting people into squads automatically was a bad idea for social aspect of the game.
Outside of his requested feedback we wanted the ability to lock/open squads formed by players to allow randoms.
Mostly everything else was things the developer did.
The main reason why they don't use official channels is that when a developer usually speaks in formal environments such as blog and the slightly less formal forums, their words get taken as prophecy. Thus if something where to go wrong and not make into the build, well I get burned, not the game (via burning developers)
None the less I have expressed the lack of updates from the developers on the next build and their standard argument which I don't blame them is that they rather work on the game than write blogs. Dev blog process eats up about... estimated 120 man hours. (as various people oustide the original writer have to look it over, process it, send it back and keep cycling until its 'perfect for mass consumption, also if requiring art assets not in the game yet just throws a massive monkey wrench into the whole thing)
Luckily for you feedback works three ways. One, people like myself shove good posts/feedback in front of ccp's faces quite often though whatever means such as twitter, irc, and forums even. Its something not to be abused much but those involved seem to know what pass for attention needed thread. Two, ISD voulenteers also have been doing the same. Three, GMs and Developers themselves browse though the forums much much more than you imagine them to be doing. Quite often the developers would present IRC with a thread and ask for thoughts about it. |

Arrant Leet wrote:So I joined my first Corp last night, and I decided to build a squad.
Sigh.
We need TOMBSTONE. That guy could sure build a good post. Also, we need some SUKMYTURBAN and the iWAGGLE guy in these forums.

I agree that the OP did point out something that is really not working at all in the game. In large corporations like PxRxO where players may end up with over 100 other players in the corporation in their contacts it could take upwards of 20 minutes just to sort through the whole cumbersome mess and put together a squad.
This needs to be fixed and as has been rightly pointed out these terrible menus and long loading times will turn off all but the most masochistic and dedicated players.
But the players as a community also ask for really pointless and completely stupid crap all the time. User design is almost always worse than what you get when a designer is cocky and has a vision that people might not always immediately get. And implements that vision.
Users rarely if ever know what they want. They know what they don't want thoughGǪ It is up to the designers to interpret the feedback we give them so they can bring their own vision into being. If we are so great at designing games we should all be out making games. Not playing DUST.
I too find the tone of what was otherwise an insightful post to be really annoying and am tired of the childish, spoiled attitudes in so many forum posts. But then I have to remember this is the internet. And that gamers often go around throwing fits like a two year old.

The game isn't technically launched. Also menus weren't dealt with at all in the last build update so I would assume they are on the menu for the next one. CCP tends to focus on one region of the game and hammer out tons of issues there, then next round do the same in a different area.
We had tons of gameplay bug fixes, and lots of actual gun play mechanic fix type stuff last time so It's very likely that this next build will come with a lot of menu optimization, social optimization and the like.
Hopefully. |

This, among other obvious concepts, has been suggested many times over the last year. I would love to see this, but believe CCP either isn't interested in working on fine tuning the interface or plans to get to it but have it as a low priority.
I really hope it isn't as the OP suggests, a belief that the current system is in anyway superior or even equal to one in which you simply click the name and invite to squad, because if it releases like this, where the contacts menu is the only way to invite to squad, and the contacts menu takes forever to load (forcing peeps to delete contacts to avoid long load times), then I'll be pretty sad. |
