Lonnar, my apologies, I read this
"For everyone else, read on cause this is rather important and proves that CCP listens to the players."
and then you gave the Jita example. I took that to mean you thought Jita was an example of CCP listening. I took exception because I thought Jita was an example of CCP not listening until things got so bad an uprising was necessary. Perhaps we were saying the same thing.
But to the idea that CCP has learned it's lesson and we should bide our time because DUST 514 does not suffer from the same blindness EVE displayed pre-Jita I was struck by what Iron Wolf Saber said in a subsequent post...
"Most of these are however pet projects worked on by the developers but hopefully will be in the upcomming 'expansion'"
While I respect Iron Wolf Saber and his dedication to the community I am saddened to find that users concerns are being addressed through developers pet projects and communicated through chat channels and/or private communications with user community leaders. I would feel better for the game if they were addressed through some more formal process with acknowledgement to the community from the managers of that process that scheduling of the effort was a considered modification to the overall project plan.
It may be I misinterpret the pet project comment. It could be it means "These things were considered, put into the plan, but because of community interest we have moved them up in the schedule." I hope that's the case. If he knows (and cares to) Iron Wolf Saber may be able to clarify.
Let me restate Public IRC channels.
As for the entire conversation of what the developer wanted feedback on we told him about squads in public games and we went to express that putting people into squads automatically was a bad idea for social aspect of the game.
Outside of his requested feedback we wanted the ability to lock/open squads formed by players to allow randoms.
Mostly everything else was things the developer did.
The main reason why they don't use official channels is that when a developer usually speaks in formal environments such as blog and the slightly less formal forums, their words get taken as prophecy. Thus if something where to go wrong and not make into the build, well I get burned, not the game (via burning developers)
None the less I have expressed the lack of updates from the developers on the next build and their standard argument which I don't blame them is that they rather work on the game than write blogs. Dev blog process eats up about... estimated 120 man hours. (as various people oustide the original writer have to look it over, process it, send it back and keep cycling until its 'perfect for mass consumption, also if requiring art assets not in the game yet just throws a massive monkey wrench into the whole thing)
Luckily for you feedback works three ways. One, people like myself shove good posts/feedback in front of ccp's faces quite often though whatever means such as twitter, irc, and forums even. Its something not to be abused much but those involved seem to know what pass for attention needed thread. Two, ISD voulenteers also have been doing the same. Three, GMs and Developers themselves browse though the forums much much more than you imagine them to be doing. Quite often the developers would present IRC with a thread and ask for thoughts about it. |
