I'm new to this game. Downloaded it to my PS3 about a week ago. I am terrible, I am REALLY terrible. I'd like to not be so terrible. At the moment, all I do is camp-and-snipe because that's the only way I can get kills, and I'm not even good at that. I go like 6:1 most games. For a sniper, that's really not good. Here's why I sit back and snipe:
A- It's pretty fun, in MMOs I usually play the fast stealthy guy that can get in and get out, or just stay out of the battle altogether if I know I'm going to get destroyed (yeah, I'm a bit of a wuss).
2- I like trying to lead someone effectively, and when you can do it and get the kill, it's really rewarding.
and
D: It's the only thing I can do to keep from chucking my headset and controller through the window from being frustrated of dying all the time.
Herein lies the problem tho; I contribute literally nothing to my team other than taking out the red team's snipers. I can't effectively keep a point from being capped, if I go running in when I see it being capped, I get shot with an assault rifle and I die, compared to my pistol (I'm not good at hip-firing my sniper rifle). I'm also not good enough yet to get to the point where I can get multiple people running in the open to get to said point.
So, what I'm trying to get to end-game:
I'd just like to not be a terribad and contribute nothing to my team, I honestly think I've been on the winning side only 1 or 2 games. (Sidenote: Red ALWAYS wins it seems like, how can I join Red?) I tried out a Artificer and it was pretty cool, but when I was running around trying to repair people, I kept getting caught by snipers, or I would get shot in the back. Also, a lot of times, I would be chasing someone down to heal them, or they wouldn't know I was healing them and would run away trying to shoot me. Also, with one weapon slot, if I got caught without other people, I was screwed, and a lot of the times, it's frustrating to heal people and have their back, and then they leave you out to dry. I would end up with 1:9 kill-death ratio in these games, but with a lot of war points for triage and revives and such. Artificer was fun, just too hard for me I think.
Sentinel was terrible. I was fat, I was slow, I had a huge gun I didn't know how to use, every time I would charge it up to shoot someone, they'd already have me dead by the time the charge got there, and also, I'm terrible at aiming it. Charge up that long to miss someone who's not suspecting you, only to have them turn around and shoot you down after that is humiliating.
Enforcer wasn't really for me either because I can't aim, so running straight in to battle was the best way for me to die, I spent most of my time in those matches waiting to respawn. I finished with like a 1:5 k-d ratio. If I had half as many kills as deaths I considered it a success. Also, people having better suits and weapons than me really hurt when you're in close quarters combat.
I dunno what to do, I guess I could just keep sniping and hope to eventually get better. I'd just like to not be terrible at this game.
Also, tanks are BS! |

Well first of all there is no need to lead your target, sniper rifles dont have bullet travel time. It sounds like you enjoyed support abit, that playstyle is a pain with randoms. Try joining a corp so you can support people who actualy stick together. As far as learning to aim goes, the best thing is to do it right and repeat... so start with a low sensitivity, once your comfortable hitting a target at low sensitivity raise it a notch. Continue doing that and youll get better. |

Pt3D's Merc's Helping Mercs Compendium The Training Grounds were basically invented because of this guy.
RedBleach's Logistics Code Started by RedBleach, one of the archetypal support logis, and lots of commentary added from others at the top of the game including Free Healing.
Cross Atu on Infantry Skill Sets Guy has a lot of knowledge on a lot of things. Some very insightful work into Logistics roles as well.
Maken Tosch on Ninja Knifing While focused on some Nova Knife/CQC specifics, the guy knows ground movements and strategy. Good knowledge to have.
My own General Tactics Overview A shameless bump of my own articles though they seem rather logical and straightforward it's amazing how many people jump in this game with two thumbs and a forefinger and nothing of the grey cells between the ears to tell them what to do with those three digits. You'll also notice I link to most of the above in my own already anyway but figured I could bother to repeat myself. |

^^^^ SO much info out there ^^^^
If you ave read around the baord you will see you are not alone. Even the vets are frustrated by ineffective players or speak on the problems you speak of in bad Public games. This is what I and others are talkign about, someone coming and saying YO, I wanna learn!" Some think everyone should learn the hard way, NO! the Hard way learners got their stripes, now teach the new fighting force from your experience brother.
That said, what information can you Corp provide? What channels are available to you for help? Do yo play mic'd if there is anyone to talk to? SO much of this game is not about playing the battles in "the game!" its the reward of the character! Alot of Newberries close up and snipe. But if you are not sniping other Newberries, you aren't killing Vets geared to handle a shot or two if you aren't trainined into sniping. Maybe a bit of armor damage then they fall back smartly. It's squad make up, the game is a team and it is so much more awesome that way, but you have to get out there and ask. GOOD ON YOU MATE!
Squading up will elevate your game if you ahve players who communicate. Youw ill start to see improve with time in regardless of ersult though yes it is frustrating. Proper gear builds will make you less a target, survive that extra death shot while your weapon skill kills the other guy a bit quicker etc etc. You wanna pursue Sniper? Look for some Scout builds. Some sic snipers out there. Sortie comes to mind (love dropping names, creates a history of characters like they can become famous as years roll on), he may not know who I am, but surely most people have met a bullet or two of his to the brain.
You are the player that we do not want to lose because you get frustrated, (IMO). So take the hard knocks, but reach out to learn. Dedicated players have so much information to give and have built so many suits when SP was given out like candy to get people to try all the different aspects to provide feedback.
Anyway, ask away. Use the channels, voice chatchannels and if that is a default Corp, look for a "real" Corp and run in groups. |

Having too many snipers is a problem. Having no snipers to counter their snipers seems worse. If you love sniping then keep practicing and be a great one. When you see half your team hiding in the hills then practice something else with really cheap gear to add a new speciality and get down there and capture objectives.
Most of your issues seem to come from running solo. Just having one buddy on comms can make a world of difference. I've had some great matches running solo but when I have a partner we're almost always at the top of the match. |

imo you're not going to get any better if you jerk off in the hills all day.
get into a good squad. Join a corp. Play with people who are good and you'll just get better (eventually :P).
FPS skills seem to transfer well from game to game. I think Unreal Tournament feels closer to this game than many others, and it has my favorite weapon, the ASMD Shock Rifle!
Anyways, this game has no single player. If you want to improve your FPS skills without showing off how bad they are, you should check out another good FPS game. If you're used to a PC and not a controller, you might want to connect a mouse and get a cheap bluetooth keyboard. imo the best FPS gaming mouse is WMO 1.1a, so don't feel like you have to spend some cash on an LoLHighDPIMMOMouse.
otherwise, practice makes perfect. The more you play, the better you'll get. As long as you're not too ashamed, it shouldn't be too bad. |

That's true. Counter snipers can be extremely valuable to your team. I just got the impression that he had trouble doing that too, but some of that may not be his fault. Head-glitching is annoying =/.
In terms of defending objectives as a sniper, it can be done, but usually not from the red line. You have to position yourself in certain areas. Although that's the nice thing about counter sniping- you can worry less about how people can get to you or know where you are because you'll probably be moving around a lot.
I read what you said about defending objectives, and it sounds like it's more of a problem with your positioning. You don't want to be too close to the objective you are defending. You want to be far enough so that people who are trying to take it can't reach you if they're at the objective. Shooting the guys in the null cannons is hard too. There's a fairly large space between where the wall ends and where you can actually hit, so it's kind of like an additional invisible wall. Watch other snipers, see what they do, and you should be able to figure out what works and what does not.
Upgraded pistols are a terrific CQC weapon, and since almost no one can aim you'll get plenty of kills if you can. It sounds like you won't be running and gunning, so I'd suggest forgetting about pistols for now.
imo I really like snipers who can run with their team. You might want to practice doing fast hard scopes in your red zone for a while on a pole or box to get this down. There's really no quick scoping in this game, just people hard scoping quickly. |

There are plenty of youtube vids explaining stuff like the different ways of sniping. Probably should look at drag scoping and the like too. Quick Scope doesn't work in this game (from what I could tell). QS is when you use the auto aim to fire a shot as soon as you can get it to register, which is before you can even look and aim down the sight. Hard scoping quickly is just quickly sighting your rifle and taking a shot. There's a difference XD.
You should probably talk to other snipers in this game. I'm just going off of what I've seen and what has worked well against me. For the most part I don't like snipers, but I can't deny that they do have a purpose, and can be of some value >.< |

Thanks for all the replies! I have to sort through and +1 all the good help. A couple of other questions tho, real quick:
I would prefer to stay as a sniper, but maybe as 0 Try Harder said, I could get better at sniping on the move and hip-firing. Any skills help with this?
I currently wear a Scout suit for the lower profile and for running the hell away when things get real, is this the preferred dropsuit?
Are codebreakers worth looking in to for running down to the objective when it's clear and hacking back? |

Also read the posts in the training ground a lot, especially if you have no idea what the poster's mean, people's class guides are especially useful as they pass on important knowledge for your own roles and useful knowledge on other's. For example i play logi, but i also have experience of the heavy so I know the basic tactics heavies use to get kills, it helps me avoid and deal with them when they are the enemy. Most people tend to give away information about their own play styles on the forum so it's especially useful info for sniper's like yourself, it tells you how the majority of any given class will react to you.
Play smart and don't be afraid to die(it's going to happen a lot) and remember knowledge is power. |

snipers are literally the worst. luckily for you, countersnipers are pure gold. it works out well, since other snipers are some of your easiest prey. when the red snipers have all been humiliated, bring out an smg and shoot people in the back. the smg is surprisingly lethal. scout suit is a great choice. go all the way with signal dampeners and associated skills. don't run away so much as flank and kill from behind. also, you are ideal to man turrets and hack CRUs for easy points. pack an injector or hive for more easy points. |

I don't think you should hip fire tho! Just move and put up scopes, then shoot. I don't think hip fire for sniper rifle works well in this game, but you can try it on a wall or something.
Mister Belding wrote:I currently wear a Scout suit for the lower profile and for running the hell away when things get real, is this the preferred dropsuit?
I switched my suits around. I started in another suit, then sniped in scout, then moved on to another. Scouts have a smaller hitbox and can move around quickly, but they can easily be one shot by almost any rifle. Other suits have more tank, but are slower. I think it's up to you. I'm not the biggest fan of profile dampening. Just don't go heavy. Not only are sniper heavies lame, but they don't have equipment slots too >.> those heavy snipers are worse than even a random blue dot afking because they need support from their team mates to be bad!
Mister Belding wrote:Are codebreakers worth looking in to for running down to the objective when it's clear and hacking back?
I'd get talents first. You can use hacking speed talents on any suit, and you won't gimp any of your stats. Using codebreakers on a suit reduces tank and what your suit can do so you can hack slightly faster. It's up to you if you want to use them or not. If you do use them, use them on a logi suit since logi hacks faster than any other suit.
edit: I would recommend prioritizing. If you want to be a sniper, spend your sp in sniping skills. You're probably not going to be running to cap objectives as much as you will be defending them, countering other snipers, and covering your team as they try to capture them.
People have different opinions on this, but I recommend making an alt PSN to get some passive SP on another guy. You can try new things with him too. That way if you don't like something, you put it on a character you don't care about and can get skills you want more on your main. |

Haven't read everything but squad up and coordinate. I think I heard something about a corp member just asking a good player if he had room in his squad. Try that, worst thing they say is no, best case they show you what a good squad operates like. People in general are eager to teach it seems.
Also stick with others, the biggest displays of death dealing I've seen in this game were squads (including some squads of corps that posted here) who moved together, helped each other, and swept through people who didn't bring the same thing. Sticking with others means revives, heals, points (from reviving or assisting) and potentially someone watching your back.
Personally I think the biggest trick to learn in a shooter is to be willing to say "yeah I'll come back later". Find a heavy who will eat you? Just run away. Group up and when they get to him you'll all be better for it. Under rifle fire? Get back to the group. Staying farther away reduces damage (btw damages have optimal ranges then max ranges, closer to max range the less damage, optimal range is 100%). Find a group, when the group encounters them you'll be safer. Scout with a shotgun? Well that MFer is gonna outrun you so good thing you stuck to the group and he'll die in the combined corssfire. |

Seems to me this game has a rather steep learning curve. Once you figure out whats going on, it's great fun, but until then it's just downright frustrating! I've only been playing a couple weeks and just last night FINALLY got in a squad with some people who had mics. I'm in a corp though haven't been able to play with anyone from there yet.
Since the key to this game is team work, you need to have a squad of people who all work together for the same goal. 4 people working together is a force to be reckoned with considering that most people who play this game are solo players. So as others have said find yourself a squad of people with mics. You can find em, in local chat before jumping into a battle. Just ask people if they have mics and if they want to squad up. Should find people right away. Beyond that, just play this game as much as you can! You may get your ass kicked, but eventually you'll figure out what your doing wrong and be a better player for it. Also level up your skills. You like support/sniping, then concentrate on skills associated with that.
Not much more advice beyond that, as I'm rather new myself. But this is what's helped me. |

You just need to find the play style that suits you, wanna stay out the action and support players? go AV and use Swarm launchers and sit back on a roof or mountain and scan the skies for incoming vehicles and take them out before they land, or harass Drop ships so they have to pull out or get destroyed. Plus always good to be prepared for an incoming tank |

So, you're a stealthy guy- that can be a very helpful strategy indeed.
First, you'll want to fit drop uplinks and place them where you obviously think nobody would look in or accidentally notice.
Second, your main job should be finding and exploiting the other team's blind spots. If there are no reds guarding A (very common on manus peak), sneak in THE LONG BACK WAY, and try to first take the CRU (if there is one), then take the NULL cannon.
The concept of taking "the long way" is more or less a rule of thumb for being sneaky for me- the last place the enemy would expect you to enter an area from is from the same direction they use to enter that area. Also use that to your advantage for simply harassing the enemy team in your free time- the more they put into watching their backs, the less they can put into fighting the rest of your team. |

Also use that to your advantage for simply harassing the enemy team in your free time- the more they put into watching their backs, the less they can put into fighting the rest of your team. Essential words of wisdom here for those of us who like to flank objectives. Even if for a good distraction. Sometimes I just jump around and grab attention so my team mates can finally break through. It looks silly, but it works.
Also, if I may, in addition to carrying drop uplinks (if sneaking and flanking is your style) please hack the CRU before the objective. That gives the rest of us a good foot hold to get a good push going assuming one is needed. Its just a good practice in general.
As far as sniping is concerned, one side to cover, back to the redline, and preferably a slight hill in front of you so you can duck back and reload. Avoid tunnel vision. That will get you killed. Its all too easy to sneak up behind a sniper who picked a bad spot and has his/her helmet glued to their scope. Don't do that. Learn the good spots. That's where other snipers will likely be. Assuming you see them first, they are easy kills.
As previously mentioned, leading targets doesn't work in Dust. The dot turns red, pull the trigger. Its tough to break out of that habit. I still do it for sure. That being said, if you're a little off on your aim, try taking body shots. I never aim for the head on a moving target. |

This character is a Sniper/Logi Bro and most of my WP is probably from Logi Bro. I get a lot of kills doing that, BTW. As a sniper I am okay. Not great like some but it is a role I can do reasonably well. Most of my Sniper WP is probably Kill Assist as stripping shields and most of the armor will enable even a Scout or Logi Bro to finish the take down. Loosing the Kill doesn't bother me nearly as much as losing the objective or the match.
You are being an effective counter sniper. We will always need those.
Yet, you are missing two of the best things a sniper can do. Get a mic. If there are no mics on the squad then select team and activate voice for team. Keep an eye on who is doing what (Reds are hacking Supply Depot between B and C; Blue hacking D there are two Reds closing on you now!). Situational awareness is good and supplying overview is important.
The second item is what are you doing in the first few minutes of a Skirmish?
I run a stamina boosted Scout Suit with an AR and sometimes a hacker module. Then I run like a bunny to a pre-determined list of objectives, be they Letters, Supply Depots, Gun Turrets or whatever. I normally have two or three objective lists in mind when I see the map. If I am slow getting my first spawn I adjust to plan 2 or 3. Maybe missing Letters to get the CRUs and Supply Depots.
The one thing I do different than many Snipers is that my first Scout Suit is assumed to be death. If I survive long enough to swap out at a Supply Depot that is great. Otherwise I sneak, run, hide and capture everything and anything I can until it is time to die and return to Snipe or Logi Bro. Also, I use an AR (Assault Rifle) and try to kill any Red I can ... from behind, their side or when they are hacking anything.
The last advice I have is fine tune your positions. Try to find a spot (they are hard to find) to cover a Letter or a CRU. They are both spawn points and you can thin the Reds as they arrive. They will want to counter snipe you so be prepared to scoot. And to protect a Letter Objective try take them down as they arrive even if you cannot get them while they are hacking.

So I will give you all a basic run-down of how it went last night:
I edited my fave dropsuit, the Dragonfly from the merc pack, and went barreling in.
Here's my old setup:
Dragonfly dropsuit Basic Dmg Modifier Sniper Rifle (the name of the sniper rifle, IS sniper rifle) Toxin SMG -empty- grenades Nanohive BPO Profile Dampener BPO CPU BPO
Here's what I changed it to:
(Upped my AR skill to L2) Dragonfly Dropsuit Basic Dmg Modifier 'Blindfire' Assault Rifle Toxin SMG 'Fused' Locus Grenade -empty- Nanohive slot CPU enhancer CPU enhancer
I was able to play 2 1/2 games last night, RL got in the way of me finishing the third one, but here's how they went. The first one, I was zippin around, capturing objectives and popping redberries. Man was it fun! The deaths were hard for me to take, and with each one I got more and more mad, but I learned what I did wrong with each death too, so that was invaluable the next time. I went 10/4 in the first match, with 975 WP (which may not seem like a big deal, but that was the most kills and the most WP I have ever gotten).
The second game was a little rougher. It was on a map with only 3 points, and everything seemed to be more out in the open. I got picked off by snipers a couple times, but I capped a few objectives, and managed to go 6/8, one of those deaths being at the very end of the game when I was reloading my Blindfire and it went through the reloading animation, but didn't actually register a reload for 10 seconds, and wouldn't let me swap to my SMG, and I died. I might or might not have yelled out CCP! after that one.
The third one was on another map with only 3 points, A being in some crags, C being off to the side on a platform, and B being in the middle of a little makeshift city. This one was aggravating. I died a lot. A whole lot. But the highlight of this game was the red team trying to take B, me spawning at B and taking out 4 of them before I could go down to being AR'd in the back. I had to leave before the game ended so I didn't get to see the end result, but I would say I was probably 7/11 or so.
All in all I had a fun night, was more rageful than most because of the dying, but I learned something with each death. I dunno If I will stick to this setup or not, but it was sure fun to try out some AR to AR battles. I've found a few things out as well:
I'm a lot squishier than my Assault counterparts. Takes me a full clip to put them down, sometimes they can put me down in 5-6 bullets.
Fused Locus Grenades are not for me. They exploded on impact. I'm more of a try to bounce it around the corner at a Heavy with an HMG kinda guy.
The tactical AR rifle looked like it might be fun if I could get my aim down better. I like the idea of a mini-sniper AR.
Also, I need to better figure out how to use my skillpoints. But hey, this will all come in time, and I can't wait to get back on tonight to keep trying! |
