I'm new to this game. Downloaded it to my PS3 about a week ago. I am terrible, I am REALLY terrible. I'd like to not be so terrible. At the moment, all I do is camp-and-snipe because that's the only way I can get kills, and I'm not even good at that. I go like 6:1 most games. For a sniper, that's really not good. Here's why I sit back and snipe:
A- It's pretty fun, in MMOs I usually play the fast stealthy guy that can get in and get out, or just stay out of the battle altogether if I know I'm going to get destroyed (yeah, I'm a bit of a wuss).
2- I like trying to lead someone effectively, and when you can do it and get the kill, it's really rewarding.
and
D: It's the only thing I can do to keep from chucking my headset and controller through the window from being frustrated of dying all the time.
Herein lies the problem tho; I contribute literally nothing to my team other than taking out the red team's snipers. I can't effectively keep a point from being capped, if I go running in when I see it being capped, I get shot with an assault rifle and I die, compared to my pistol (I'm not good at hip-firing my sniper rifle). I'm also not good enough yet to get to the point where I can get multiple people running in the open to get to said point.
So, what I'm trying to get to end-game:
I'd just like to not be a terribad and contribute nothing to my team, I honestly think I've been on the winning side only 1 or 2 games. (Sidenote: Red ALWAYS wins it seems like, how can I join Red?) I tried out a Artificer and it was pretty cool, but when I was running around trying to repair people, I kept getting caught by snipers, or I would get shot in the back. Also, a lot of times, I would be chasing someone down to heal them, or they wouldn't know I was healing them and would run away trying to shoot me. Also, with one weapon slot, if I got caught without other people, I was screwed, and a lot of the times, it's frustrating to heal people and have their back, and then they leave you out to dry. I would end up with 1:9 kill-death ratio in these games, but with a lot of war points for triage and revives and such. Artificer was fun, just too hard for me I think.
Sentinel was terrible. I was fat, I was slow, I had a huge gun I didn't know how to use, every time I would charge it up to shoot someone, they'd already have me dead by the time the charge got there, and also, I'm terrible at aiming it. Charge up that long to miss someone who's not suspecting you, only to have them turn around and shoot you down after that is humiliating.
Enforcer wasn't really for me either because I can't aim, so running straight in to battle was the best way for me to die, I spent most of my time in those matches waiting to respawn. I finished with like a 1:5 k-d ratio. If I had half as many kills as deaths I considered it a success. Also, people having better suits and weapons than me really hurt when you're in close quarters combat.
I dunno what to do, I guess I could just keep sniping and hope to eventually get better. I'd just like to not be terrible at this game.
Also, tanks are BS! |

Thanks for all the replies! I have to sort through and +1 all the good help. A couple of other questions tho, real quick:
I would prefer to stay as a sniper, but maybe as 0 Try Harder said, I could get better at sniping on the move and hip-firing. Any skills help with this?
I currently wear a Scout suit for the lower profile and for running the hell away when things get real, is this the preferred dropsuit?
Are codebreakers worth looking in to for running down to the objective when it's clear and hacking back? |

So I will give you all a basic run-down of how it went last night:
I edited my fave dropsuit, the Dragonfly from the merc pack, and went barreling in.
Here's my old setup:
Dragonfly dropsuit Basic Dmg Modifier Sniper Rifle (the name of the sniper rifle, IS sniper rifle) Toxin SMG -empty- grenades Nanohive BPO Profile Dampener BPO CPU BPO
Here's what I changed it to:
(Upped my AR skill to L2) Dragonfly Dropsuit Basic Dmg Modifier 'Blindfire' Assault Rifle Toxin SMG 'Fused' Locus Grenade -empty- Nanohive slot CPU enhancer CPU enhancer
I was able to play 2 1/2 games last night, RL got in the way of me finishing the third one, but here's how they went. The first one, I was zippin around, capturing objectives and popping redberries. Man was it fun! The deaths were hard for me to take, and with each one I got more and more mad, but I learned what I did wrong with each death too, so that was invaluable the next time. I went 10/4 in the first match, with 975 WP (which may not seem like a big deal, but that was the most kills and the most WP I have ever gotten).
The second game was a little rougher. It was on a map with only 3 points, and everything seemed to be more out in the open. I got picked off by snipers a couple times, but I capped a few objectives, and managed to go 6/8, one of those deaths being at the very end of the game when I was reloading my Blindfire and it went through the reloading animation, but didn't actually register a reload for 10 seconds, and wouldn't let me swap to my SMG, and I died. I might or might not have yelled out CCP! after that one.
The third one was on another map with only 3 points, A being in some crags, C being off to the side on a platform, and B being in the middle of a little makeshift city. This one was aggravating. I died a lot. A whole lot. But the highlight of this game was the red team trying to take B, me spawning at B and taking out 4 of them before I could go down to being AR'd in the back. I had to leave before the game ended so I didn't get to see the end result, but I would say I was probably 7/11 or so.
All in all I had a fun night, was more rageful than most because of the dying, but I learned something with each death. I dunno If I will stick to this setup or not, but it was sure fun to try out some AR to AR battles. I've found a few things out as well:
I'm a lot squishier than my Assault counterparts. Takes me a full clip to put them down, sometimes they can put me down in 5-6 bullets.
Fused Locus Grenades are not for me. They exploded on impact. I'm more of a try to bounce it around the corner at a Heavy with an HMG kinda guy.
The tactical AR rifle looked like it might be fun if I could get my aim down better. I like the idea of a mini-sniper AR.
Also, I need to better figure out how to use my skillpoints. But hey, this will all come in time, and I can't wait to get back on tonight to keep trying! |
