Is there any point to playing in a scout dropsuit if you aren't keen on sniping? What are the advantages/drawbacks? What would you use as a weapon instead? |

I have a very basic scout setup I use early on in Skirmish games. It's basically a fast Drop Uplink carrier with a SMG, I use it to hack the objectives first and get behind enemy lines to open up alternative spawn points for my squad. |

Stealth, Scanners, and Speed are your advantages.
Paper-thin Armor and Shields are your disadvantages.
Your Scout suit has a much larger Scan Radius than the other suits, letting you detect enemies much farther away. When you are walking, not sprinting, your Profile size is teeny-tiny. By training up Dropsuit Operations and Profile Dampening, you can make it even smaller. By fitting Profile Dampeners, you can get even smaller.
This means that if you move smartly, you can sometimes walk right through the heart of the enemy by using corners and cover to stay out of line-of-sight. It's hard, but doable.
Because you can run so fast and so long, Scouts also make good speed capture agents to quickly cover ground, place Drop Uplinks, and capture objectives before the enemy can. |

I've seen references to it doing so, but I haven't found a definitive description from the devs.
In the meantime, I assume it's so and when sneaking run only to cover open ground or if I have to in order to escape. |

This, this and this. I've only been playing for a week and I've already gotten the hang of what it means to be a Scout, though I prefer to use the Tactical Assault Rifle for the first life, then switch to the Shotgun in case anyone catches up to me. I like to lure them and blast them on the face with my boomstick. Also, after familiarizing myself with the maps on Skirmish, I've created strategies. Initial tactics that allow me to capture 1 or 2 nodes and deploy a Drop Uplink on a concealed area so my team can strike inside enemy lines and surprise them. Yes, shotgun is usually the second option for a non-sniper scout, added with the mass driver. The loadout I use involves the scout Type-II suit. The drawbacks of the suit is the slightly slower running speed and no sidearm weapon slot, but the better armor and two equipment slots make it the perfect suit for an objective oriented shotgunner. With the use of a specialist shotgun, I can run around with remote explosives and an uplink, along with a basic codebreaker and profile dampener. It is simply an awesome loadout, as you can sneak past enemy lines nearly unnoticed, hack the objective and just wait for them to try and retake it, only to blow them up with your REs.
It does require skillpoints invested on circuitry and light weapon useage to make the CPU low enough for it to be a valid loadout, even with the specialist shotgun. I still recommend it personally, and it really kicks ass when you run with a full squad.
And as a small tip, when people are shooting at you after you've hacked the null cannon and planted a remote explosive, run away with your remotes equipped. Not only will you run faster- as equipment increases running speed slightly and increase your chance of survival, you can still detonate your remotes if you go into unconcious state(the state in which you can still be revived from). I've scored several kills and probably defended many null cannons with this tactic. |

I prefer remote explosives over uplinks, but that's not to say that uplinks are any kind of bad idea-- just that I like setting traps. Remote explosives are most effective if you set them at Skirmish objectives that don't see much actual combat; people hucking grenades will destroy them.
One other thing: you don't need to be primarily a sniper to find good use for a sniper rifle. Cover is abundant at ground level, and a scout behind a pile of boxes just behind the front line (or, better still, behind the enemy line), engaged in a little impromptu sniping, can end up with a surprising number of kills. Just stay inconspicuous; hostiles that spot you will make a point of trying to AR you in the face. |

I usually run a scout suit with a Burst AR and it works surprisingly well. I've found that the best way to survive as a scout is to be as sneaky and underhanded as you possibly can.
If an ally has the enemy backpedaling into cover, use your speed to run around to the flank and hit him when he least expects it.
Act like a shark. Try to go after solo or wounded enemies whenever you can.
Always run with a group, if you aren't the first one seen, you won't be the first shot. This seems obvious, but if you have a scout suit and aren't charging in with a shotgun, you usually relegated to 'least threatening' status (or at least that's how it has always seemed to work for me). |

As everyone else has already said, easily the most common Scout alternative is a Shotgun Scout. By using the Scout's superior movement speed and jumping height, one can lay the smack down on a group of unprepared enemies, especially with the right equipment. I definitely recommend Flux Grenades for any kind of Scout suit that does CQC, as it strips any enemy of all their shields, leaving only armour to get through.
Using a Scout in a role like this, though, means you can't just Rambo it up. You're still wearing paper-thin armour and shields, so you have to act accordingly. First rule, whatever the situation, do not assault any one from the front. In fact, that's a rule better used for DUST in general, but the heavier suits can get away with breaking it sometimes. Scouts, however, cannot. Always flank, always ambush, always surprise. You never want an enemy to know your location. If you see someone looking at you, run.
I seriously recommend Remote Explosives for any objective game mode, simply because you can throw them down in front of the objective, hack it, then leave. Next time you see that objective begin to flash, just hit the button and the area is secured. If you do it enough, enemies will eventually learn to just stop going to that objective, and will start going somewhere else.
Module-wise, it's your choice. For low slots, you can go with Codebreakers to make a stealthy hacker, in which I would say focus on Clone Reanimation units first and foremost, so your teammates can spawn behind enemy lines and flank them. Or Profile modules for either detecting other enemies better or making your yourself harder to detect. I personally run with Kinetic Catalyzers to make me even faster and a CPU upgrade to fit everything on there.
In terms of weapons, really, any CQC weapons will do, but the shotgun could very will be the best. As a backup, I like the submachine gun in general, but if you invest enough skills I feel Nova Knives could eventually be effective as a stealth weapon, especially considering apparently they're doing something with them in the next build. But as they are now, the standard Nova Knives really only one-shot Militia dropsuits and you have to be practically groping them in order to do that much, when you could have just shot him with your shotgun earlier and be done with it.
TL;DR: Use a shotgun, Flux Grenades, always be stealthy, Remote Explosives in Skirmish, |

Hey, could you expand on the benefits? I find this an interesting concept worth exploring. Initial thoughts include more armor, more slots for shield mods/dam mods, equip slots for hives and explosives not to mention increase in PG/CPU, but also an increase in rifle sway. Which wouldn't be much of a problem if you're only using the fit for finding a hidey-hole and staying still while you pick off reds. Anything I'm missing? |

Yes. This game is mostly about speed. Many people aim with strafe (it's more accurate), so the additional speed gives you a huge aiming advantage. The assault scout (using an assault rifle) is extremely strong.
I'd leave the profile dampening and shotguns to noobs. You can play scout similarly to assault if you're a strong player.
Don't listen to the n00bs.
edit: I saw some n00b suggest type-II scout suit, the armor variant. This is bad. If you use this, you are bad too. |

I've made a number of posts here and there about them. Here's a link to one ^_^. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=514959
I'll post a quick bit here too. I see shotguns as a no skill weapon of chance. Everything n00bs have said about shotguns applies to almost every weapon. Use cover, try to flank, cap objectives? Who doesn't do that?
So it comes down to utility. Shotguns are only useful at a range of five to ten meters. Within that range, they can one shot most players. That's it. That's the only thing they can do. If you can sneak up on someone and shoot him while he's not paying attention, you can kill him with almost every weapon and don't need a shotgun to do it. If you run at someone with a shotgun, he'll just shoot you in your face.
The majority of a shotgun n00b's kills come from:
- people spawning in front of him in ambush (if you have done ambush, you'll understand)
- sneaking up on players who aren't paying any attention
- someone running around the wrong corner into the barrel of your gun
Some people complain about getting one or two shot by pistols just like a shotgun. The difference is that to do that a pistol needs to land a head shot, and with the spread of the pistol you need to aim down sights to do it all the time. I have a pistol-only alt, but IMO getting a head shot to kill someone requires a bit more skill than just hitting them anywhere at close range. Fortunately pistols have a range that is slightly longer than that of a shotgun's, so I can regularly drop n00b shotgunners with my pistol, and LOL at them for being so bad.
Shotguns are for vehicle operators who have no skills in anything related to infantry and need to kill Heavies at close range. Shotguns are also for people who can't get kills with any other weapon- ie they need a weapon of chance at close range because they cannot aim. |

If you can strafe and aim, you'll get far more kills going scout with an assault rifle than you would a shotgun. You'll also be much more useful to your team.
I forgot to mention that pistols are outclassed by assault rifles in almost every way. I just use them because I find it more challenging than a spammy-the-clown AR. As you can see, I use pistols as a "fun" weapon that I'd never use as a primary in a serious battle, but I believe pistols are significantly better than a shotgun. This puts the usefulness of a shotgun scout at dead last.
Shotguns are worse than a weapon that's a sidearm. -_-
edit: I'll eventually make a pistol scout guide. Hopefully it'll fix some of the n00bness that's been going around lately. There are some good posts about how to use an assault class, but you're right, there's not much on how to use a scout on the ground. |

The advantage to scout is mobility. Armor reduces movement speed. If you're not going for speed and want more tank, go logi. It can be faster than assault. |

It's fast, hard to detect and I can detect enemies more easily... Usually armed with a Shotgun (for closed areas) or an Assault Rifle and using Nova Knives as a sidearm (since the scout is quite fast, you can catch enemies easily and stab the hell out of them )
That's how I use the Scout suit so far... hope it helps you |

How about if you use this, you are gimping yourself and not taking advantage of the class you play. If you do not take advantage of the class you play, you should find one that better fits your style of play. |

I'm not running the type-II to get more armor, I run it for the two equipment slots. As I explained earlier, I run with a combination of specialist shotgun(call it noobish or not, I don't care), remote explosives and drop uplinks to make a great objective oriented scout shotgunner. |

To each his own I guess. Personally, if I wanted a suit that's slower than type-I scout because I want to use equipment, I'd use the fast logistics suit. More equipment slots, more HP, and it's faster than an assault dropsuit.
I like optimization. If I want to do a role, I want to be the best I can be at it. I wouldn't want to run a scout suit which is better suited for a different role than equipment/tank. To me it just seems like those guys who use assault rifles and shotguns on heavy suits @.@ |

All the stealth stuff? Bah!
The shot gun + SMG combination on a scout built for speed is a winner in group engagements. I use a Dragonfly Scout Suit with a militia Shot Gun BPO and Toxin SMG, with NO WEAPON SKILLS (This character is going HAV and all my skills are into tanking). I go front line with the other units and slaughter.
The advantage of the scout suit in front line combat is clearing out enemies using cover and chasing down retreating enemies. Add the fact that I carry a remote repair tool to heal other front line units, I make an impact. Your speed is such an advantage in a group melee and everyone is shooting at other suits because "Hey, he's just a scout" you can almost literally move around the field at will without being bothered.
Oh and Heavies + Scouts, nasty combo... |

Ok, so I guess I was wrong here >.>
The Scout Suit Type-II is apparently not too bad at all with an AR. The AR can get rid of people, and some good armor reps can heal up any damage you take. It has more hp than type-I so you won't die as quickly, and an additional proto slot. The scout type-I style only gets two equipment slots at the proto level.
But type-II scout can be good. Basically there are situations where type-I style is better than type-II, and vice versa, so the best thing to do is make setups for both :P.
um yah, sorry. Thought I should correct that. I basically always run shields > armor, but some can make the armor type work.
Shotgun scout is still worse than pistol, ar, or almost any other weapon. :P |

I have a scout that carries nova knives, 2 sensor dampeners and a drop uplink. That is it. I find I can walk right up to people while they are hacking terminals, or in a fire fight without being noticed in the least. Early on in skirmish matches I stick to the edges of the map and drop uplinks for later use. I find more often than not I am totally ignored while in this scout setup.
For the blood thirsty mercs out there the lower profile + nova knives combo has netted me a fair bit of kills and assists. Now if I could just sprint and charge my knives at the same time... |
