No, no and more no. There's absolutely no reason to restrict that slot. If the suit is designed to carry heavy weapons, while still sporting a side arm there is no logical design reason to restrict that slot. It has the power, slot, and dexterity req to manage any type of weapon.
Medium/scout suits don't have the power req to manage, and make up for this in speed, agility, and noise level.
Your idea is like telling a world class body builder that he can only use the biggest weights in the gym, because the smaller guys don't want to share the medium weights.
As for reinforcing the Commando Class, this wouldn't have accomplished that, poor suit design is what makes them less than desirable. I run Commandos on my current main, and taking light weapons away from the other heavy suits would not result in buff. The changes to Drop suits that are coming with 1.8 will. Brief run down; decreased price, improved CPU/PG, additional slots, and racial suits to vary the balance.

You shouldn't punish players for odd fittings. HMG is useless at medium range, which has been extended by rail rifles and combat rifles. Until heavies get more interesting weapons, all you can really do is save sp and try to stay interested.
Heavy suits are for defense. but it is hard to predict where the fighting will take place. It seems like domination is the new ambush, as players rarely try to cap objectives, and instead focus on trying to clone out the enemy team. That doesn't leave much for heavy assault players on these huge new maps. |

Maybe even add an extra module slot on the commando to sweeten the deal? So a suit that can handle a forge gun can't handle a rifle? It doesn't make sense. Just give the commando 1 more slot for a module boom done

This should not be done. Plain and simple. It is plain wrong to limit Heavies to only heavy weapons. Especially when the game only has two heavy weapons.
I almost wish there was just plain weapon slots with the ability to fit whatever weapons can fit. I can live with the current heavy, light, and sidearm slots though.
Making even more restrictions would just go against the core philosophy of New Eden though. More options, and more sandbox is needed, not hard coded restrictions to our actions. We need more freedom, not less freedom. |

If all light weapon damage is reduced by 20% and a 5% bonus per level is given to assault frames this would fix the problem as well. No need for a hard restriction, if you want a light weapon on a heavy by all means do it but you should be less effective than what the suit is meant for. If you want light weapon damage you would then go commando or assault but you'll pay for that damage with less tank.
If you want to be beefy and dish out hurt well you have to use the heavy weapons which will all have their drawback. HMGs, inaccurate at range poor damage projection, Forge guns, long charge time and low mobility with low ROF. The solution is to tie weapon damage more directly to suit role. |

No, this just gets DUST away from being a sandbox game like EVE. You should be able to fit anything on pretty much everything. Instead I-¦d rather improve the heavy weapons. If heavy weapons are more effective than light ones heavies will tend to them rather than having a weaker weapon and the drawbacks of heavies. One problem here is again the lack of heavy weapons: We have one for suppressing and on for anti material but no real allround weapon like ARs.

Personally I think this is silly. Preventing Sentinel suits from using light weapons is simply unjustifiable from an in-universe perspective. This whole phenomenon is, in my opinion, merely a symptom of the available heavy weapons not being good enough to justify either the expense or the effort to become proficient in their use.
Frankly it's like complaining that I can fit 150mm 'scout' accelerators on my Rokh. It's a massive waste of a Rokh, sure, but there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to do it. |

Talos Alomar wrote:"oh no this gun is too light! I can't carry it!"
Restricting heavy and light weapon slots only to weapons that fit exactly in the weight range makes no sense.
I used to run a heavy with a laser all the time. Why? Because I was able to get a lot of damage downrange and be able to soak up any and all damage that came back my way. If I was stuck with only using the forge or HMG I wouldn't have been able to have as solid of a defense of an area.
There's a fit I have that I still break out pretty often. It's a heavy sniper. It's an ADV suit with a ADV tac rifle That I bust out for counter sniping. Guess what? I think it's perfectly valid to want to use a suit with enough EHP to soak up a couple sniper rounds to line up your shot. There aren't a lot of reasons not to.
So why shouldn't a sentinal be able to grab a RR and own an open area? You know, actually being able to defend an area? their entire job? They're slow, and you can usually pick them off if you use the right tactics anyway (hit and run, and making sure to pick off their pocket logi if they have one) so why shouldn't someone be able to pick the right weapon for the job?
This game needs more options, not less. QFT.
Seriously, this mindset needs to be spread around. Stop with all the threads to impose limits. CCP gives you tools to do your job, so utilize them. I mean, should we start limiting Caldari to only using shields? Should Amarr be penalized when not using armor? That's the same logic behind arbitrary weapon class limits on suits. The greatest part about the freedom to fit the suit the way you (and your opponent) want(s) is that you can do exactly what they did! You can fit a heavy suit with a light weapon and go to town.
An easy "fix" to the wrong-class weapon "problem" may be just to buff suits when using their appropriate weapon class. Assault suits get a bonus to light weapon damage--say, 15-20%, but light weapon damages are nerfed 15-20% across the board. So, when using an assault suit, you put out full damage, but when using Logi or Heavy suit, you put out reduced damage (to emphasize the intended role of the suit). But in no case should creativity be limited arbitrarily. If that happens, Dust will be just like every other shooter out there.

It looks like they're trying to encourage more role-definition and specialization.

Let me solve this, I'm 18 mill lifetime SP, and I have prototype commando. First of all, the heavies using light weapons is somewhat uncalled for, but I can still floor them in a one-on-one fight because they have a light weapon with about 60 rounds, and a sidearm that deals much less damage. Whereas I have two light weapons, both full clips of 60 rounds, and two Complex Light Damage mods, with RE's to replace my lacking grenade slot if need be. Hell, I can stick an active scanner, and even a nanite injector in there without trouble. Simply put, if a heavy is running around with a light weapon that's something other than FOTM, they're screwing themselves when they come up against me. Yeah, a RR, and CR can plant me flat on my ass if the right fitting is used, but I can still unload a total 120 rounds into you if you give me enough time, all with a 17% damage boost. Basically, if you walk up on the current "unicorn," you're staring into the face of a very dangerous man. And his slightly higher health stats do actually give enough resistance to go and massacre about 5-7 assault suits before he dies(this is pub match statistics, in PC it would be less, but still very effective). Just yesterday, I did a PC match in my Commando suit with two other heavies in my squad, and two logis'. Charlie was impenetrable to even the most proto'd out heavies as I was standing behind the heavies, and unloading Duvolle Rounds, and Viziam Rounds into them.
Your face is something to shoot, so I will shoot. Don't be offended, I do it to everyone.

OK look I'm getting really tired of saying this to people like u who think that heavies with only two weapon choices is balanced and fine......
Heavies have 0 medium ranged anti infantry weaponry....limiting heavies to using only the hmg or forge right now will result in a couple of bad things happening....
1 open maps=fgs tower sniping all over again or death taxis everywhere.....instead of actually fighting for objectives on open maps all heavies will be trying to find some way to be effective
2 cqc objectives would just be clumped Sooo much with heavies that people will complain about heavy spam ruining the game because heavies would not be able to push objectives....show me a heavy running across a field at an objective and taking the objective and I'll show you a bunch of ****** shots on the other team....
CCP has already said they would consider limiting heavies to heavy weapons once all heavy weapons are released.......so buddy tighten up your bootstraps Cuz its going to be a while before they even THINK about your proposal.... or quit just make sure to gimme ur isk

I think you misunderstand how the weapon slots work. You're able to fit a smaller capacity weapon in a higher capacity slot, because it' well.....smaller. Makes sense to me.
I think you might also misunderstand how the suits are designed. The ability to wield heavy weapons is one of the advantages a Sentinel has over other suits, while having drastically less slots (including no Equipment) is a disadvantage. I'm also betting the Pilot suit (if we ever do happen to get that thing) will only be able to wield a Sidearm as well. If you have an issue with certain suit-to-suit balance, that's another discussion. But completely altering a mechanic of the game because you don't like Heavies with Light Weapons is pretty silly to me.

The way I see this is considering 2 different aspects:
- Freedom of fitting (something CCP advocated for Dust) - RPG
The first point is really important in my opinion, and it would be a shame if we go in the opposing way on this; might as well create templates then. The more diversity we have and the more that same diversity is viable, the richer the game environment is.
The second point covers the more conventional way class games let you play. In RPGs you use weapons that are made for your class and that use your natural abilities. You can still use a sword on an Archer probably, but you wonGÇÖt be able to use all the swords and youGÇÖll do miserably with it because your natural abilities donGÇÖt help it perform. And you most certainly wonGÇÖt be able to carry any axe whatsoever.
With this in mind, and coming back to Dust in specific, 2 things could happen:
- Special variants of a certain type of weaponry that are locked to that class (example: all Assault Rifles are available to the Assault dropsuits, but the other dropsuits can only use a fraction of those)
- Higher requirements for using weaponry not designed for that dropsuit I donGÇÖt think that we should look on this on the damage point, but from the fitting cost point. So, you should have higher CPU/PG costs in fitting an Assault Rifle on a non-Assault.
This still lets you have the freedom of equipping anything the way you wantGǪ at a cost. A specific skill to decrease that penalty could also be implemented. This Gǣfreedom for a priceGǥ is my favorite approach. |
