Sub human seems more fitting, upgrade our clones natural survivability and I believe we'd be worthy of a cooler name.
Something to do with data transfer seems more appropriate seen as our consciousness lives on regardless getting endlessly transferred from onre clone to the next. Our bodies are temporary whether we like it or not as clones.
Necromancer would be more appropriate, but iv just taken the name from a classic book that influenced hacking cultures greatly and inspired the matrix.

What if our MTACs are like living coffins similar to the warhammer dreadnought and starcraft dragoons. Operators are a type of highly specialized soldier but the name has yet to be widely used in eve lore on a significant level. An operator can perform such a large variety of roles on and off the field that it would not be in lore violation of being a mercenary.
Elysians and for the matching lore name calling from the Amarrians (from Geek Elysion pedion "Elysian field," where heroes and the virtuous live after death, from a pre-Gk. word of unknown origin) We been delivered from the clutches of death, and by Amarrian thinking delivered from the jaws of damnation and into a path of salvation.
So your thoughts?
Actually, CCP calls the EVE players "Capsuleers" after the capsules that they are stuck in while piloting pod capable ships. Other references are made to "Pod Pilots" as well. But not "Captain" as the point of a pod capable ship is to reduce the crew to few or none. The pod pilot does all the work. If there was a Captain, it would be the head officer other than the pod pilot on the ship and more for traditional purposes.
Operators wouldn't sit right with me. It is a term derived from "Special Ops" as in Special Operators. Since the new "immortals" are designated to replace the normal troops, they really aren't special ops but instead like an advanced soldier. They aren't infiltrating, assassinating, rescuing, etc.
Empyreans refers to those capsuleers who when out to create empires out in unclaimed 0.0 security space.
Because of the DUST 514 reference, the majority of people refer to DUST mercenaries as Dust Bunnies. It also can be referenced back to The Guristas who were the first to "liberate" the technology from the Amarr and distribute it to the other empires. Their symbol is a skull with bunny ears.
I prefer the term GroPo (grow poe), short for Ground Pounder because that's what ground forces do as they cross over land, they pound the ground with their feet, their weapons, and their vehicles.
Another term from Battletech was "popcorn" as they guys runnin around in suits on the ground would die like popcorn when hit with laser fire etc.
In the end, a DUST Mercenary is EXPENDABLE. That is the whole point of hiring someone else to fight your battles.
Another term that comes to my mind is "lemmings" because we all jump outa the MCC like a bunch of lemmings off a cliff.
Maybe someone can come up with some cool thing based off the fact that we are always using dropsuits. Like "dropbears" or some such silliness.
But in the end we are just a form of "augmented infantry". So maybe that is the name we would be called officially and Dust Bunnies would be the slang. But I still like the term gropos. ;)

Since the existential discourse has settled a little (don't misunderstand, I was facinated) thought I'd offer an idea. Obviously, I'm biased towards IWS OP idea of "Operators" (follow the leader, bishes! XD) but I consistently self-describe as an Independent Contractor, so I think something in that direction, like others suggest is more appropriate. Tie to our ground-based activities, like "Terra-Contractor", "Terra-Contract-Personnel (TCPs for short?)" or something more EVE lore appropriate to it and we'll be there.
"Contractor" also gives us the flexibility moving forward to expand what we do, "Mercenary" has a distinct military connotation and should DUST expand as EVE has to include mutiple employment variations a title that roots too firmly into military action will dilute the distinguishment of other trades.

In an event that mortal soldiers are faced off against immortal soldiers the tactics are as follows.
Destroy all warp uplinks Destroy all CRU devices Kill as few of the immortals as possible; with every death they come back angrier and all the much wiser Get seen by few of the immortals as possible; their communications and tac net are superior
So far engagements have been catastrophic losses for mortal forces so far with minimal numbers of success and its been opting for corporations and organizations to just hire a set of immortals to deal with it. [/quote]

Our implants are different from the pod pilots'. Theirs is less advanced, and less powerful than ours. Of course, their implants also have huge batteries in the form a reactor. But ours is instant transfer, their implants are copy-paste. Slight difference, major in-game difference.

Entertaining thread...let me spam a few options:
Operators - means far more than just special operations related folks. An operator is anyone that can work the angles and outcomes. Coincidentally all my assault dropsuits have the Operator designation, example PCD Operator for my PC CalAssault suit.
'Jacks - could be MercJacks, GunJacks, DustJacks, ect... Merc/ soldier flavor and an homage to "jacking" into new clones continually
Revs - short for Revenants, continually brought back to life.
Dusters - touch of lore and known in the community.

My two suggestions:
1. Parasoms or just SOMS for parasomnia, an intermediate state between sleep and waking. It makes sense in the context of who created the technology. It also works well for acronym creation.
State Owned Military Specialist Strategic Operations Memory Simulacrum
2. SIMS for Simulacrum would work well for similar reasons. It is a weak synonym for clone meaning likeness frequently used in the context of immortal beings. It is often used to mean a copy of a copy (implied inferiority). It also works well for acronyms.
Strategic Initiative Military Simulacrum
