Cadavers? Kinda morbid but fitting in the EVE Universe. We don't have much of a good reputation anyway so it could probably fit. I also think it's ironic since you'll NEVER find a dead mercenary due to the mechanism that turns us into dust upon death and the fact that dying is pretty much a part of the job.
Edit: We're also pretty dead on the "inside" so it kinda works well with that.
DOUBLE EDIT:
If not those, what about Minute Men? I'm not sure if it's licensed or not but I do know it would suit is pretty well. It takes Dust mercenaries less than a minute to get fitted and drop down on a battlefield.

Considering that war is much like hell, as descrived in some religions:
-hell riders (nha) -samsarians (from sansara on which the six realms of rebirth describe much of the mental estate of dusties) -tormented (sounds like good for amarrians nickname)
more common language: -wurms (dirt eating, crawling n recycling scum) -dirts (common n despective) -crawlers (cus they r the 1s on the dirt) -can heads or cannister (describe much of the dropsuit-soldier situation and is something commonly recycled)

Why not Effigy?
From Wikipedia: "An effigy is a representation of a specific person in the form of sculpture or some other three-dimensional medium. The use of the term is normally restricted to certain contexts in a somewhat arbitrary way: recumbent effigies on tombs are so called, but standing statues of individuals, or busts, are usually not. Likenesses of religious figures in sculpture are not normally called effigies. Effigies are common elements of funerary art, especially as a recumbent effigy (in a lying position) in stone or metal placed on a tomb, or a less permanent "funeral effigy", placed on the coffin in a grand funeral, wearing real clothing. Figures, often caricature in style, that are damaged, destroyed or paraded in order to harm the person represented by magical means, or merely to mock or insult them or their memory are also called effigies.
It is common to burn an effigy of a person ("burn in effigy") as an act of protest.
The word comes, perhaps via French, from the Latin, meaning "representation", and originally was used in English in the plural onlyGÇöeven a single image was "the effigies of ...". The word occurs in Shakespeare's As You Like It of 1600 (II, vii, 193), though it first appears in 1539. "In effigie" was probably understood as a Latin phrase until the 18th century.[1]"
Capsuleers are represented by their ships that they become one with. Dust mercenaries, or dare I say Effigies, are a literal physical representation of the human being they represent. May I also note, unless they are being burned or discarded, Effigies are meant to last the test of time, AKA immortal.

Jadek Menaheim wrote:Nephilim may be a fitting choice. wiki wrote:The Nephilim /-ên+¢f+¿-îl+¬m/ were the offspring of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men" according to Genesis 6:4; and giants who inhabited Canaan according to Numbers 13:33. A similar biblical Hebrew word with different vowel-sounds is used in Ezekiel 32:27 to refer to dead Philistine warriors.
The Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon gives the meaning of Nephilim as "giants."[1] Many suggested interpretations are based on the assumption that the word is a derivative of Hebrew verbal root n-ph-l "fall." Robert Baker Girdlestone [2] argued the word comes from the Hiphil causative stem, implying that the Nephilim are to be perceived as "those that cause others to fall down." Adam Clarke took it as passive, "fallen," "apostates." Ronald Hendel states that it is a passive form "ones who have fallen," equivalent grammatically to paqid "one who is appointed" (i.e. overseer), asir, "one who is bound," (i.e. prisoner) etc.[3][4] According to the Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon, the basic etymology of the word Nephilim is "dub[ious]," and various suggested interpretations are "all very precarious."[5]
The majority of ancient biblical versions, including the Septuagint, Theodotion, Latin Vulgate, Samaritan Targum, Targum Onkelos and Targum Neofiti, interpret the word to mean "giants."[6] Symmachus translates it as "the violent ones"[7][8][9] and Aquila's translation has been interpreted to mean either "the fallen ones"[7] or "the ones falling [upon their enemies]."[9][10]
DUDE YES!!!!!!!! THATS AWESOME!!!!!
They should definitely call DUST players Nephilims!! Then 10 years from now when we're able to ride space ships.. the motto could be, "The Nephilims got their wings back" O_O

"Suits" evokes an image of dudes sitting around in their corporate offices, playing golf and deciding which people will starve over the winter. Or maybe MIBs, if you are really stretching it. It really doesn't suit the physical nature of us and also falls into the same issue as the "merc" term, which is simply too broad. |

Sorry, just had to post this little addition to my original post.
Just imagine the trailer VO, "You are an Effigy, engineered to burn on the battlefield."
I think this whole idea fits into the 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust' thing CCP is going for. |
