An alternative possibility would be murderhobo. Mercs are so homeless that they don't even keep their bodies.
Technically, we could also be called "spirit warriors". Because that's what we are - Intangible spirits that inhabit host bodies.
The term would be too dignified, though.
In the same vein, there would be stuff like "gods of death". But that is easily approaching weeaboo territory.
"Poltergeist" might be funny.
A less dignified term might be "bodysnatchers".
We technically don't steal our cloned bodies, but I could imagine a common person to use that term because they hate us.
I would even imagine business partners to use that, because we don't really care about such trivial things.
It would also depend on perspective.
How would capsuleers call us? Meatbags?
We are using similar tech, but they control huge starships with it while we control living bodies.

What are mercs earning their ISK for? Are they earning ISK because they simply love to fight and need all the nice equipment?
Are they earning ISK for some functional purpose? What kind of purpose would require millions or billions of ISK? Isn't even a few thousand enough to settle for a lifetime?
Can mercs even settle down? Can they just inhabit a body for the rest of their life and die a natural death? |

You could ask the same question from billionaires who have money to throw everywhere. Some people have more money than they could ever realistically spend, and they still want more. Once you know the answer to that, you'll know the answer to your original question too.
And yes, clone soldiers, just like capsuleers, can settle down on a clone and inhabit it for the rest of their days. Regardless of what some people claim, you can inhabit a clone that is just a copy of a normal person and live normally in it, however you wouldn't be able to use a dropsuit in that state most likely.

A little late to the party, but I believe the term and book you're referring to is Neuromancer. Necromancer typically connotates a mage that deals in the dead, be it spiritual or physical while Neuromancer was the book that codified the cyberpunk genre . Both terms are appropriate I suppose, so no harm no foul. Honestly I like "Liches" as a derogatory term. We are everlasting, but what makes us who we are is forever locked away, much like a liches phylactery. Also I totally dig "Aions", because our time is unbounded.
