"Players" or "PCs" Because that's what players are known for - sociopathic murderhobos with an attitude of extreme metagaming. And what is better metagaming than being immortal? An alternative possibility would be murderhobo. Mercs are so homeless that they don't even keep their bodies.
Technically, we could also be called "spirit warriors". Because that's what we are - Intangible spirits that inhabit host bodies. The term would be too dignified, though. In the same vein, there would be stuff like "gods of death". But that is easily approaching weeaboo territory. "Poltergeist" might be funny.
A less dignified term might be "bodysnatchers". We technically don't steal our cloned bodies, but I could imagine a common person to use that term because they hate us. I would even imagine business partners to use that, because we don't really care about such trivial things.
It would also depend on perspective. How would capsuleers call us? Meatbags? We are using similar tech, but they control huge starships with it while we control living bodies.
Edit: I have a general fluff question. What are mercs earning their ISK for? Are they earning ISK because they simply love to fight and need all the nice equipment? Are they earning ISK for some functional purpose? What kind of purpose would require millions or billions of ISK? Isn't even a few thousand enough to settle for a lifetime? Can mercs even settle down? Can they just inhabit a body for the rest of their life and die a natural death? |

Can mercs even settle down? Can they just inhabit a body for the rest of their life and die a natural death? Or are they trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation that doesn't allow them the luxury of ever completely stopping the fight? You could ask the same question from billionaires who have money to throw everywhere. Some people have more money than they could ever realistically spend, and they still want more. Once you know the answer to that, you'll know the answer to your original question too.
And yes, clone soldiers, just like capsuleers, can settle down on a clone and inhabit it for the rest of their days. Regardless of what some people claim, you can inhabit a clone that is just a copy of a normal person and live normally in it, however you wouldn't be able to use a dropsuit in that state most likely.
Vulcanus Lightbringer wrote:Why not Merceneer? Merceneer sounds dumb and tries to ape capsuleer too much. Personally, I still support clone soldier/operative as a name for us, and duster in more casual terms. Then if we were to speak neutrally about both capsuleers and dusters, informorph is a good one.

You know that big screen usually showing the market window in the merc quarters?
When you're not logged in your clone masturbates while watching p0rn on it. And if you don't fight for isk, his or her New Eden pornflix subscription will run out.
And I mean who wouldn't get cranky if they missed the releases of "Deep in Jovian Territory vol 15" or "Civire girls loves it up the poop-deck"? |

Sleepers.
Are we not "asleep" until our collective consciousness is awoken inside of physical specimen, who is also conveniently "asleep" as well?
Aren't our physical bodies also technically asleep while our minds are awake and active on the field of battle?

Sleepers are a race of people in New Eden similar to the Jovians so can't use that.

More powerful than a platoon of soldiers? Surely you do not believe that mortal militaries do not already have countermeasures against our kind? Means of operating heavier calibre weapons, vehicles and control units that would lock down our clone stores and weapons supplies?
It seems to me that you think all clone soldier will support your coup d'+¬tat......
I would stand against you and all like you to preserve the fragile balances of power our four nations hold, and the might and grandeur of my faith. Scum like you think they can own the galaxy.....but it is not yours to take. God gifted to the peoples of the Amarr to rule under the heavens for all time.
In an event that mortal soldiers are faced off against immortal soldiers the tactics are as follows.
Destroy all warp uplinks Destroy all CRU devices Kill as few of the immortals as possible; with every death they come back angrier and all the much wiser Get seen by few of the immortals as possible; their communications and tac net are superior
So far engagements have been catastrophic losses for mortal forces so far with minimal numbers of success and its been opting for corporations and organizations to just hire a set of immortals to deal with it.

Could you take that seriously calling mercs that? We are clone scum, accept it.
Sub human seems more fitting, upgrade our clones natural survivability and I believe we'd be worthy of a cooler name.
Something to do with data transfer seems more appropriate seen as our consciousness lives on regardless getting endlessly transferred from onre clone to the next. Our bodies are temporary whether we like it or not as clones.
Necromancer would be more appropriate, but iv just taken the name from a classic book that influenced hacking cultures greatly and inspired the matrix.
A little late to the party, but I believe the term and book you're referring to is Neuromancer. Necromancer typically connotates a mage that deals in the dead, be it spiritual or physical while Neuromancer was the book that codified the cyberpunk genre . Both terms are appropriate I suppose, so no harm no foul. Honestly I like "Liches" as a derogatory term. We are everlasting, but what makes us who we are is forever locked away, much like a liches phylactery. Also I totally dig "Aions", because our time is unbounded.
