I cannot understand why public matches aren't tiered and why isn't their a decent new player experience.

My problems with matchmaking.
I get thrown into battles with uneven teams, in fact I had 3 v 9, and a 4 v 2 battle yesterday.
I still get battles with a full tea of friendlies, but 0 enemies.
In both these sorts of cases, matchmaking does not add any new players even though its clearly needed.
Matchmaking has no problem adding players to battles about to end. Why does matchmaking not add players to mostly empty battles, yet add players to battles about to end? I have even seen players joining in the VICTORY/DEFEAT screen.
Still fails at matching players with those of their own skill levels. If there is a squad of high skill players, match them against enemy squads of high skill players, don't throw them in with a bunch of NPC corp newbs.
Please fix.

If it means that new players are able to accomplish SOMETHING besides being the padding for your KDR, I don't mind you having to wait a little longer. It's already been suggested several times to break up the player-base by lifetime WP/SP. As it stands right now, new players are just there to be farmed. It wouldn't be game-killing to have some form of tiered matchmaking in which new players at least have a chance to get on their feet before a dozer smashes their faces in the ground. |

one of the most memorable matches I've ever had was a 3 vs 2
Was by far the best stealthy Minja game I've ever played. Full of brilliant tactics and my own personal dirty tricks By the end of it they were constantly on their guard afraid I would strike again
I just wish the other 2 on my team got off their backsides and did something. I won on kills but the other guys could cap more objectives so we lost

I've been in a 1v4 match and watched the matchmaker add 3 more people to the other side making it 1v7.
CCP are hapless munchkins with no clue what they are doing, its not even bad, its just flat broken. |

Fixed isk contracts with varying values blam problem solved. This was sujested back in weekend only testing. Pve could be used as the isk farm for bads.

Everyone throws the blame towards those of us who run prototype gear and IGÇÖd be all for not running proto if you could at least tell who or what level of SP players you're against. I feel really bad running prototype gear (sometimes) but IGÇÖve got to spend my ISK somehow and I want to enjoy the game how I like playing it.....
If CCP pulled their fingers out of their ass and implemented a matchmaking system and considering there is no matchmaking, newberries are unfortunately getting put into matches with those of us who have 25 million plus SP; which is wrong!
P.S. Unfortunately it looks like we wont have 1.8 this month either to help the issue :(

Partially agreeing. Matchmaking is still flawed, even while taking into consideration the cases where a nice initial balance is broken straight away for one squad cancelling or leaving before match starts (that will unavoidably create hard cases).
I don't have much experience on the academy, but it doesn't seem to work properly. I fired up my alt (which has been laying around unplayed ticking some sp but zero wp) and begun the first match which is to my understanding automatically going to be academy. On that very first game and second following this freshman char was paired up against... ...Rainbow Effect. On following day three games vs Russian Terror Squad (or something).
Even though I found those games challenging and refreshing, that can not be the environment we want new players to learn the game.

Come on guys I am sure we have all been there. I didn't expect MR AMARR to get to this point though :P I have to be honest with myself though, his point still stands. There are a few options CCP could use to patch the system to help a little.I have no idea what small fix would be best but a few ideas have been floating around on the forums the last few months. |

Honestly, that sort of language really doesn't make me overly excited about interacting with this thread. BUT, to address and acknowledge some of your points:
- Matchmaking does have it's issues. I've even been in squads with some of you when it's occurred so I know that feel, bro. We're aware of it and working on a fix, but I can't give you an ETA just yet.
- The learning curve is steep, and being thrown in to matches against people who faceroll you isn't fun. We're aware of that and it's something we want to fix.
- No, 1.8 is not coming this month due to the Holidays.
- These are legitimate concerns about the game and I'm hearing you. But, threatening language really doesn't entice Developer interaction. Not everybody has thick skin. :) We play and love our game to death, and want it to be fun and accessible for all kinds of players. I'll do what I can to keep you guys updated.

I was never a supporter of segregating part of the player-base from any particular mode, but now I eally do think vehicles should be kept out of ambush. Regarding ambush spawns, its broken, and it has ALWAYS been broken for over a year. CCP demonstrated that they can't make it work after all this time, and they need to replace the spawn system completely. I totally agree with the need for tiercide.

Removing vehicles from Ambush?
I Dunno, I spend enough time on foot trying to find anything to shoot at.
The maps are too big compared to playercount.
Either rewamp the game mode and make smaller maps or bring a higher player Count -which probably won't work.
Or at least let us keep the LAVs or future hoverbikes or whatnot, I'm tired of running...
The combination of todays huge maps, low player Count and no vehicles will be very boring indeed.

Yes, vehicle free ambush please. Mentioned this several months ago and tankers jumped all over me for it. Now though, with tanks being as feared as they are, tanks are having a noticeable impact in ambush. Or should I say a OP presence.
Small maps make it nearly impossible to even call tanks to counter. Last night ran a few games with my corp. Ambush, was running my logi, and was SICK of using my tank. Boom 2 enemy tanks. Sigh.
Though as I was roaming the edge of the map, vainly searching for a safe area to call my tank in, I realized that there is just no way to call a tank in and not have it noticed by the others on the field.
Next ambush I said screw it, and called in one at the start. Lav comes in, then my tank. Then a maddie with blasters pulls up as it was dropping. No shields when I jumped in.
What really pissed me off though, was that was a missile gunnlogi, with duel hardeners. That poor poor tank would have cried, and his buddy too.
Yeah, I'm a tanker and I want tank free games please.

Biggest problem is, AV simply cannot cut it much of the time. And even then, it forces many people into an AV roles that leaves them weak to infantry. Call in 2 tanks, and half their team will be needed just to fend off tanks.
And maps are usually very small, making it very easy for the tanks to deny a side tank support, which is the BEST counter currently.

There are a few very large maps, though I rarely see them. They basically feel like a skirmish maps, and typically, tanks are less of a worry, as there is plenty of room to safely call in tanks.
So, much tank on tank action, so infantry can do other infantry.

Either rewamp the game mode and make smaller maps or bring a higher player Count -which probably won't work.
Or at least let us keep the LAVs or future hoverbikes or whatnot, I'm tired of running...
The combination of todays huge maps, low player Count and no vehicles will be very boring indeed. I can't walk 3 feet from spawn without getting shot at yesterday. The maps are immensely small with no place to really hide. There are a few very large maps, though I rarely see them. They basically feel like a skirmish maps, and typically, tanks are less of a worry, as there is plenty of room to safely call in tanks. So, much tank on tank action, so infantry can do other infantry.
What generally happens on those maps is one spawn would get 'gamed' into a corner and they cannot do anything. This is generally accelerated by a blueberry dropping an uplinks (or continuously dropping uplinks) so the default or uplink spawns becomes a death trap unable to get out of the seige or organize enough to push out of it.

Well that just sounds naughty. As it stands, I'm continuously filtering AMBUSH out of my Battle match-ups because it just devolves into HE WHO FIELDS THE MOST TANKS FIRST DOTH WIN! My team just a half hour ago, got themselves backed into a building and was pinned down inside it by 6 tanks for the final half of the map while my squad-mates were singing over mic. It was fun times.
I'd be willing even to face a wall of proto-spam if it meant that the match'd be infantry only. I've always enjoyed those sorts of match-ups more than a mix of infantry/vehicles when it's a TDM-setting. |

The current matchmaker works very well (for me anyway, longest I have waited is 4secs). But from what I have gleened it only matches people based on their internet connection. You would benifit greatly from a performance based system on top of this.
This would require a new metric, which I will denote as Infamy for the time being. The infamy metric doesn't need to be shown to players if you don't want to. Bjt it is calculated from KDR, WLR, WP PM, ISK Fielded PM, put in a formula something like this. (ISK +ù KDR) / (1 / WLR -í WP PM )
FYI : WLR -í WP PM = WP PM to the root of WLR.
The formula will probably need tweaking but basically you then match people from the first system by getting the infamy as close as possible..

Match making is flawed, but as long as "leave battle" is always an option i can cope. Smart deploy however is terrible. This is evident in 80 clone matches with 75/0 clones at the end. If you start in a kill box and some blueberry drops links.... well it is over. |

These posts are much easier to counter and gain the upper hand on the OP. Ones with well thought out arguments and questions are to hard to counter, answer and defend without leaving yourself in a disadvantages spot publicly and quotable.
The Question Saberwing leaves with answering so quickly is more that they are reading the posts. Which is a comforting thought. However not being able to guage their positions on any of it beyond what the community has been stuck with from CPM's like IWS... makes this process frustrating. And for those who don't have endless time on their smart phone, multi-tasking abilities and or time off work. The ones without that, just get frustrated after a few months and give up throwing their hands up in the air and find another title. The worst part, most of those Mercenaries where the truly talented ones. |

Not to mention Dust has been out for about 2 years now, and matchmaking still isn't fixed.... Just that thought alone should warrant "developer interaction" with the community, because when it has been 2 years and it's still a huge issue, people are going to get pissed off, plain and simple.. |

perhaps have smart deploy in skirmish and dom so you can automatically be put near an objective? |

Regarding matchmaking: Any idea how you will fix FW? I mean it's not necessarely a thing about the MM there, but about the factions most players chose. And getting stomped all day on Amarr and Caldari side isn't really fun. So any thoughts about making it desireable to fight for a faction which holds 0% of the districts? Like giving them Standing and more LP for example until they get a foothold again?

I had no issues coming in as a newb. I did not know sole who played. I wasted SP in skills I would never use and alike. All I knew was kill orange chevrons! That is what makes it some fun.... The months of building your clone up. Going from hit and run run run tactics to if you shoot at me there is a 84.75% chance you will die is great. I can still run 2k ISK suits and pull up positive kill numbers cause I either lone wolf way on flanks or stay in a group.I honestly for 2 months did not know what a proto suit looked like. It was only when a squad I was in said something that got me wondering. Best advice for a newb......understand what different suits look like and know whento not engage. This is not COD....not BOs. Rushing gets you killed. Be a medic and squad up until you can skill up then ask people before using SP.
On the flip side, matchmaking by lifetime skill points should be easy to achieve. Just give Scotty a 15 seconds timeout for the query and if he cannot evenly stack sides......he does his best.

The smart spawn system could be smarter about not grouping entire teams withing 20m. The game should have an invisible frontline to make it so people spawn more evenly in ambush. Matchmaking on the other hand should have a ranking system in place. Someone made a thread suggesting it and it works pretty well in counter strike global by having the collective ranks of each team be as close as possible.

Just stop spawning and allow the system to reset. Dumbass blues will notice when their numbers cut in half or more. Doing so gives you a chance to regroup elsewhere on the map, albeit at a clone disadvantage. |

How do you reconcile this with the Dust's setting, New Eden, home to the most cut throat MMO ever? Imo this negates the single biggest motivating argument from the tiericide faction. Tiericide is a long trip down a difficult and costly path only to end up with many of the same problems we started with. There are far better ways to spend our limited dev resources, tbh.
Education and a quality NPE are the first part of the answer. Going the CoD route is not.

This is an interesting question: New Eden is meant to be harsh. But - although they both live in the space place - EVE and DUST are ultimately separate games, with different player bases and needs.
Where HTFU may be an answer to some of EVE's concerns, that doesn't always transcend over in to DUST where the nature of our player demographic (and ultimately our game) should be more accessible - particularly to newer players. That doesn't mean that there won't be situations where HTFU won't be a viable answer in DUST...we just need to make sure it's done appropriately.

You guys need to come out and interact with the community. People who play Dust are legitimately frustrated by it and like to have some reasonable answers - like what you did just now. If you made the effort as a team to communicate with your players more often, I am sure the tone of the language when you are addressed would be quite different too. I understand that this is your game since you created it but it's also our game because we are here for the long haul and are willing to pay money depending on the product quality that you create. Mithridates is right. We do our best to respond to much of the constructive feedback we see - but would you rather I had never responded to this thread at all? We read and patrol our forums on a daily basis - some of us arguably spend more time on here than you lot ;)
New suggestions and bug reports are pulled in to a report which is then presented to both the QA and Development teams for their feedback and analysis. The results are then posted publicly, which can generally be found here: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=34744&p=3
Just to reiterate: it's one thing to be chastised for not responding, but totally another to think that you can elicit a response by using threatening language towards Devs. Not all of us have thick skin, and while some of us may brave it to continue posting, I promise you'll get better results if you play nice.

their should be obstical courses for vehicles to learn the controls and a firing range that literally has you fire every weapon in the game against bots.
all that stuff is what should make up the "academy" that new players should be placed in when they first start.
plenty of fps do it that way... Tribes, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, Halo. its like an industry standard these days, and ccp somehow thinks theyre either exempt or too good to follow established industry practices. |

for ambush we should all just spawn in from up in the sky and drop in where ever we want. |

The combination of todays huge maps, low player Count and no vehicles will be very boring indeed. I can't walk 3 feet from spawn without getting shot at yesterday. The maps are immensely small with no place to really hide.
I agree that vehicles need to be removed. But open your eyes with the maps. THEY ARE TREMENDOUSLY BIG. You die quickly because sometimes the smart deploys don't switch when the enemy team is camping it. vehicles need to be removed, and then the map size should be reduced to something not much bigger then a large map socket. This would create enough space for people to find breathing room, but keep it small it enough so that its easy to find action.
I have two problems with dust right now. Its getting raped by tank spam, and running a marathon between each red berry if im on the tank spamming teams side. Occasionally I can find a good little kill zone, but most times im running in ambush. Running from tanks, or running to find infantry.

when has not being ready stopped you from pushing stuff out the door? You gave us FW without team deploy or the ability to select districts to attack or defend, and hell, the game itself wasnt even ready but you released it anyways. why not do it with PvE and just release it? at least we'd have it, which at this point is better than not having it and being stuck with the current affairs.
plus, having PvE now gives new players something to do other than get stomped for 6 months straight while trying to figure the game out.

The "Road Map" needed a re-map a year & 1/2 ago....... It's as if you all work in order of operations according to "Murphy's Law". You start everyone off on a Worst Case Scenario baseline, then try to top that. Some then scurry about frantically trying to fix the Hell, while the rest are deer caught in headlights. All while the Marketing & Monetization Teams are spamming "SELL, SELL, SELL!!!!" as they start stripping away the $ Value of Offers while promoting obscurities for purchase as if they had an expiration date..........
To think that the simple concept of Player Retension & Core Function could slip passed the "Radars" has me utterly baffled. New Player Experience was, and still is, "Try &/or Die". Not having Vehicle Locks in a Risk/Reward Game left Pilots suffering to the point of Toxicity. Strafe Speed changes left the Scout Suit in a bad way. Heavies were forced to Homogenize & either be a Forger or pick up an AR..... "Medium or Bust" became DUST. Content is constantly being subtracted. Maps started being designed on Sim City SNES.........& the 1 thing that could have essentially alleviated the vast majority of issues, PvE, was put on the Backburner.....as an afterthought.....in a supposed MMO.....from a Studio who is "Specializes" in MMO..... (Market Stat Anomalies in abundance......)
Care to elaborate on the line of thought that went into the pathing of these decisions??? I'd love for the chance to pry into the collective mind of a Dysfunctional Beehive |

So why matchmaking? Are there enough players for a perfect matchmaking and enough battles to chose from?
Let the players chose between levels (bronze, silver, gold, platin) and just take care that you can't play bronze with proto gear or platin with militia gear. The higher the level, the higher the rewards of ISK and probably salvage.
We had this while playing Mass Effect 3 and it worked. |

A few months ago CCP said PvE is on hold for now. Are you already working on it again? We saw so many trailers with mercs fighting drones and so on. And PvE, no matter how much stuff would be there to be fixed, would make Dust a lot better. And if it's only for the point to give newbros something to do where they aren't killed every 5 seconds.

But contrary to Ninjanomyx's statement, PvE does not solve all things. It cannot be a work-around for seemingly intractable problems with the matchmaker. In the end it won't satisfy anybody, except perhaps the uninitiated or the perpetually unobservant - these are not markets to build a game around.
Imo matchmaker needs to be made good and be able to stand on it's own two feet, only then is it time for PvE.

Concerning the whole matchmaking, tiering and protostomping issue... I already said this a couple of times, so I'll say it again in this thread:
This game desperately needs to display ISK damage lost / inflicted after the battle. Although at first glance this feature doesn't have any relation to matchmaking and protostomping problem, it indirectly does very much so. If some new player gets very frustrated after doing a 1-10 score in u pub match against proto squads (and they do), their anger may be significantly relieved if they realize that they actually inflicted more ISK damage with that single kill then they lost by dying 10 times.
After all, what separates DUST from other shooters is the permanent loss mechanics, which makes shooting people much more meaningful. This permanent loss is manifested in lost ISK, not number of deaths. Display it after the battle. This had to be in the game from day one.

I brought 4 friends to DUST and they all quit playing after a few days. They told me that it's no fun to play if you have to play a game every day for months just to have a little chance not to get slaughtered like a noob.
So I tried to play with a new character and have to agree ... Battle Academy was fun because we had all militia gear. But after that ... It was a little bit frustrating.
So CCP ... why should new players play this game or invest money?
Btw ... How many active players do we have at DUST?

There is a MAJOR flaw in your "Logic"........ We've had meaningless instanced PvP for 1 & 1/4 Years. What harm could some meaningless instanced PvE do??? And to focus on Matchmaking in a Low Population Title is only asking to deteriorate the Game further, inherently forcing more Issues onto the field. Why you ask??? Did you so easily forget the "Results" of our initially strict Uprising Matchmaking??? Unplayable Matches that were improbable to Populate..... Your "Analogy" is so far off the mark that it boggles the mind to see such utterly lackluster effort to comprehend prior to responding.
The addition of even a Barebones PvE Instance would instantly alleviate multiple issues, without presenting any form of hinderance. Matchmaking unfairly skewed??? Go PvE. Your Gear got Over-Nerfed & you have no backup??? Go PvE. Tired of Protostomping??? Carry Newberries in PvE. Need a break from the rage inducing competition??? "Carebear" it up in PvE. Forum Toxicity at an all time high??? Can't really be that mad when you can ESCAPE to PvE.
Anyone seeing the addition of a Cooperative, Non-Competitive (Unless Scoreboard Bragging.....) Mode vs AI as a Negative is considerably clinically insane....... Not only does it provide a Fresh/New experience, Content, and an Escape........it draws in NEW PLAYERS. A very large portion of the Populace generally prefers Cooperation over Competition, & often avoid PvE Exclusive Titles altogether. You see this Gamer Type flocking to Borderlands, Demon/Dark Souls, "Insert MMORPG Here", CoD Zombies, etc. And what would the addition of a Playerbace Bolster do??? Possibly put less "Strain" on Scotty to get us past the Q Waiting Line??? Increase the "Sphere of Influence" of CCP's intended "Grassroots Approach" to Advertising by increasing the "Word of Mouth" Ratio??? Fresh faces to shoot, should they venture into PvP when they feel comfortable???
This "Escape" could very well minimize Forum QQ and the "Punishment Burden" of Over-Nerfs/Buffs, diminishing the overall "Toxicity" of the Communiy. Camraderie is easier to form when there is less "Teabagging" & "E-Peen Stroking". I could go on and on.......but I'd prefer to hear your "Rebuttal". So tell me again why I'm "Wrong"??? |

1) I refuse to believe a bare-bones PvE is that hard to implement: - As long as there is a disclaimer that it is bare bones in response to our feedback and a better version is coming, that will be understood. - It's not like a new weapon that needs to be tested and balanced against the others. It just needs to work without crashing or accidentally giving out billions of ISK or 10x SP.
2) Drone shooting gallery. You can use your favorite or try out weapons that you may not be familiar with against shield and armor tanked drones with x many friends. The drones move around, shoot back, maybe guard a single objective domination style if you want to get fancy. PvE implementation v1.0. Done.
2) This works to fix multiple problems with one solution:
- Matchmaking is less of an issue because there is somewhere where it's impossible to be protostomped. Noobs can hide in PvE while the real fix to matchmaking takes place. New player retention increases, matchmaking becomes easier to fix with a larger player base - New content to stave off boredom while waiting for the main content like racial suits - People can play with the weapons they like but are UP - People can become more comfortable with weapons and be less frustrated when going back to PvP.

The way the devs talk about PvE makes it sound like shouldn't expect PvE for years from now... that is incredibly disappointing.

Or you could use a smart deploy that works.
CoD's smart deploy works perfectly, it drops you behind the front lines of wherever the bulk of your team are. It shifts dynamically over the course of the match and you'll never get dropped into a mass of enemies. You can pretty much guarantee there are no enemies behind or next to you. |

Have you played EVE? NPC AI is almost non-existent: 1) Move towards you at all times 2) Shoot
If they can't even build a matchmaking system (a form of reactive system) then how are they going to build a proper FPS AI? Even the best FPS developers on the planet have a hard time building non-sketchy AI that doesn't fall back on the old trope of "superhuman accuracy", let alone CCP.
Drones would be lurching zombies that walk in a straight line spraying gunfire at the sky. |

I'm not asking for a "proper" FPS AI right now, I'm asking for "bare bones" like I said. Some drones that bum rush you when you try to get their stuff works just fine for that. I'm not crazy, I'm not suggesting some sort of robust campaign mode to be included in 1.9.
