This is some amazing research, and gives the results many of the cooler heads on the forums have been saying all along.
Thank you for this post, and let's hope this can be kept on the front page, or at the very least be linked to future "Player count so low, DUST is R ded" posts that plague this page so often.
Bravo. |

Very cleaver use of selective sampling you should work in advertising. That said it's well written garbage :-) sadly I'm on train using a phone so I can't break the post down, but the saying lies, dam lies and statistics.

The thing is
is that dust is F2P, but not P2W. which is a rather unique standpoint, most games with micro transactions have P2W. Dust has what I call P4E (Pay for experience)
Unlike P2W dusts monetary gear does not give physical bonuses over isk variants it just gives them to you faster. Because of this dust is in an odd posistion.
Unlike P2W, a player who does not pay for AUR can still compete. Which drives out customers who P2W, there are plenty of people who shell out 100,s of punds to be top dog.
However I think CCP have stepped up their game and that we will begin to see lots of people come back once we get a wave of new content! |

MWO has been dead for a while, and Dust is following suit fairly rapidly.
When is a game dead for you? Really? MWO has about 3000 active players during peak times. I don't see how it's dead: It's still perfectly possible to play it. You'll always find people to play with, without having to wait. How is that dead? How is Dust following it quickly? Do you really need more than 50.000 players until you say "Yes. It's doing pretty good."? Really. What do you want before you say a game isn't dead?
Do you want to see how a real dead game looks like?
http://steamcharts.com/app/96300 http://steamcharts.com/app/18110 http://steamcharts.com/app/70000
This is dead. At some times you don't even find enough players to fill one 32 player server. Sometimes you find one server but it's already full and you can't play. A game is dead when you can't boot it up and just play. Dust 514 isn't like this at all. Neither is MWO nor Blacklight. These games still have thousands of active players. |

The number of people playing dust will drop considerably after the release of ps4, and since there is no guarantee dust will be on the ps4 it will continue to drop unless it is moved to p.c. Then again i'm not really bothered, the titles being released on ps4 will finish this game anyway. |

Ok, I have to agree the CoD comparison was a bit faulty. I also forgot to change the stats back from 24h to 1 week. At top times it has 50.000 on PC. But again: This is a big game. Far bigger than Dust 514 regarding money. And then it only has 10 times as much players. Kinda was expected. I wouldn't add numbers of a second platform here because Dust is only on one platform too. |

I kinda doubt it. It's not that everybody will suddenly sell his PS3 just because the PS4 is out. Even more people will also wait for the PS4 Slim until they buy it. And there are also people who want to play Dust. I kinda doubt they suddenly stop playing it because there's a new console on the market. My guess is, that the release of the PS4 will hardly have any impact at all on Dust. |

everyone i came to dust with has pre ordered the ps4, none of them will be playing dust when ps4 is released. as for everyone waiting for the "ps4 slim" if that were the case the ps4 pre orders wouldn't be sold out. True, not everyone will sell their ps3 when the ps4 comes out, i didn't sell my ps2 when i got ps3, but i never plugged it in again because the titles available to me were much better than the ps2 titles i was playing. I put a ticket in asking about the future of dust on play station 4 and they said there were currently no announcements about it. If that's the case this game will be finished for me in 3 months, and the same can be said for my friends. Roll on KILLZONE SHADOWFALL |

Well, let me look it up... no? The player numbers haven't changed at all since the release of GTA5. Look it up at eve-offline.net instead of just spouting nonsense.
GTAV was released on the 17th September. This was a tuesday. Player numbers of Dust 514 on that day: 3388 and a week before we had 3335 players. A week later 3531. I don't see any impact at all. Where are these 1000 players who left Dust you speak of? These numbers are perfectly normal on a tuesday for Dust. The 4000 - 5000 players are online at weekends. |

So what? Many people preorder both and cancel one. And they won't have too many games on release date.
Quote:everyone i came to dust with has pre ordered the ps4, none of them will be playing dust when ps4 is released.
That are what? 5 people? So what? Maybe it loses a few hundred players. but with about 300 - 400 new accounts created each day... who cares? The new consoles won't have that much of an impact because there are barely any games released for them on launch day. |

Release of 1.4 had some matchmaking problems. This could be a reason because people left. Many probably thought it won't be fixed until 1.5. So maybe we'll see some of them coming back then. But I can think of some players leaving because of this. But there was something else what happened around 1.4: School started again in America. So this had an impact on the target group of Dust. |

We'll go with the latest Call of Duty for this one. Stats are easy to find because it's a steamworks game and the Multiplayer is listed on it's own. Now look at that: http://steamcharts.com/app/202990It peaks at 20.000 players online at the same time. A multimillion dollar game from a big publisher has the same player numbers like Warframe, a small F2P-title. We can conclude that Warframe is doing pretty damn well then. Not to defend the COD games or anything, but those numbers are only for the PC version. The console versions have vastly more active players than the PC version, at likely a ratio of 20:1 (or more, since it's unlikely too many PC elitists will be playing a COD game). Just look at the sales. PC version of BO2 sold less than a million, however the combined PS3 and 360 sales is almost 25 million. 360 sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70716/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/PS3 sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70715/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/PC sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70717/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/I would guess that both the console versions of the latest COD game vary from 150-200k active players at one time, possibly more when you consider that almost 25 million copies have been sold and it is still one of the most popular online games in circulation today. Yeah whole reason why I never use Call of Duty when running numbers around. While we are at it, lets add this game http://steamcharts.com/app/212070 Star Conflict.
I think it makes a lot of sense why games like COD have such huge player bases. They are games that are relatively easy to drop into from time to time, and don't require any kind of farming/grinding to improve the experience. Granted, you do get different guns, new attachments, and all those other little perks, but a player just dropping into the game can still own with the basic packages. Recent changes to Dust (much to some's dismay) have tried to approach a model closer to that, in which the basic fits can still hold their own against ADV gear (maybe not quite proto).
In order to enjoy the full Dust experience, one needs to play for an extended period of time, leading to player burnout. We then take a break of however long, and maybe return, but as earlier posts showed, since it is free, we aren't pressured to return immediately (or ever in some cases).
I occasionally play Star Conflict, and I happen to really enjoy it. Nevertheless, their player base is just as bad, even with PvE. The unfortunate aspect of their PvE is that you can't survive higher tier matches with random people, and with a player base that is quite small, it's hard to find people to play with.

To be honest, player counts have been dropping since release, but you are right. The major, recent, player drop is directly due to the 1.4 release.

Check my post. We did what you suggest already. Second, lay off the "English is written in stone" BS. Heck, the word Shill is a 20th century word. Do you think you should be using something more ... orthodox? Also, the word ellipses is plural. Ha! You would have had me if you hadn't added added a second ellipsis into the mix, thus making my usage of the term anticipatory. Anyway, do you live in the west coast or something? Shill is very much a part of the Eastern American Lexicon.
Not to derail the thread any further, but:
http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/62859/origin-of-the-word-shill-shillaber http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/shill
Both of these sources list Shill as originating in the early 20th century, even as late as the 1940's, so clearly even the english that you use, is pretty recent slang.
Also, your useage of the english language doesn't even follow your own rules. You can't have an ellipses. I thought you'd have understood that. Anticipatory, lol!
Now, I'm done correcting your hypocrisy. I merely wanted to point out that you should lay off ragging on people's unconventional use of the language, as you, yourself seem to be doing the same.

I suspect that rather than 1.4 causing a drop in player count, it was more that expectations for 1.4 were artifically holding player count up. While 1.4 was a distinct improvement (imho), I think it wasn't enough of an improvement to keep maintaining the numbers.
Also, lots of people going back to school, and getting homework.
We also need to remember that a lot of people don't actually "leave" Dust, they just stop playing. Their account is still active, still accruing active SP, and the game is probably still on their Playstation. With every new release, many of them will come back and give it a try, and as the game gets better, more and more of them will find themselves sticking around. |

Actually the slope started before the 1.4 release when diablo III came out. There was no major significant change after 1.4 released other than the normal churn and burn of people trying to download the patch. |

Check your graphs carefully, GTA V can only be directly blamed for appox. 300 people. There was additional losses afterwards but additional external factors are thrown in and by that point and GTA V cannot take sole credit for ALL of them. |

the thing about dust is that in order to compete with the new games that come out every season it needs to produce so much content that people just don't see the point in buying other games. The game needs a business side, a strategic side, a PVE side, and of course..... more needs to be added on to the current FPS side of the game too. If we could get the daily player count up to 10-20k by the end of this year I think that would be very very good. But as it stands, the game right now isn't doing so bad for itself. All it needs is some good marketing but I think CCP is saving that for until they get a lot more content into the game (and therefore increase the player retention rate) Because whats the point of spending money on TV Air time when all the people its bringing in leave within a weak anyway? There isn't one, so we will wait.
I have high hopes for this upcoming Christmas honestly. If were lucky we may even get PVE, but who knows..... uprising 2.0 will be interesting im sure! |

Some of my corp mates are off playing GTA5 but they still play DUST. it might reduce the amount of playtime, but the RPG advancement system pretty much guarantees people will come back.
It's much easier to drop a game like CoD where you don't have much investment and there is essentially zero persistence.
I was just reading reviews of MWO and wow...
I was so looking forward to that but it seems the developers make CCP look great in comparison. P2W with purchased mechs being far better than earned mechs, only two modules worth equipping due to their OP quality, no squading lobby for solo players, two game modes (ok, we've got the same issue), and a worse grind for what low level toys you can earn in game.
The capper for me though is the loss of immersion with third person view.
All that makes me appreciate DUST more. |
