I'm really getting tired of all these "Dust 514 is dead!"-posts so I did some research and compared the player numbers of Dust 514 with other F2P-games.
So let's get this started with Dust 514 istself.
According to eve-offline.net Dust 514 has something between 4.000 - 5.000 players online during it's peak time, which is Friday - Sunday. The average during workdays is at about 3500 players online. Keep in mind that this only shows the players who are online at the same time.
Now lets take a look at other famous F2P games. I guess we start off with Planetside 2. Planetside 2 is a F2P-Sci-Fi-MMO which is considered Dust 514s biggest competitor. You can take a look at the player numbers of Planetside 2 on this website.
What you see here is the number of players logged in. The colored lines represent players logged in for each faction. The black line is the overall player count. This counts the players logged in on all of Planetside 2s 9 servers. During peak times there are about 10.000 to 12.000 players online. This means that there's an average of little more than 1.000 players online on each server. Not really good numbers for a game that promises big battles between 2.000 players at the same time. You will also notice that Planetside 2 is also losing players.
Next up is Warframe. A 4-Player-Coop-SciFi-Shooter. Currently still in Beta you may have heard some news saying that the game has about 1 million players and so on. First of all: This is just the number of created accounts. Finding actual player numbers for this game is a bit tricky. So the Steam statistics will have to do. You can find them here. During peak times the game has about 13.000 players online at the same time. We have to take into account that you can play the game without steam. So as a guess I would say the game has something between 15.000 to 20.000 players online during peak times. According to Steamcharts it is also still gaining players. Ok, that's pretty good. I would say this is because it has a focus on Coop and PvE (here's a wink to CCP to finally add PvE please, but that's another story). Still: 20.000 players is just 4 times as much as Dust 514 has.
Then we have Mechwarrior Online. It's pretty hard to find numbers for this game. There are at least 1 million accounts created. Players mention that there were 900 - 8000 players online at the same time during the closed beta. During the end of the closed beta most people mention something about 4000 - 5000 players online at max. Referring to these posts: 1, 2, 3. After that the counter was removed. To get some current numbers we have to be a bit tricky. So let's compare the players playing it with Xfire. Due to my bad luck it seems that xfire.com is currently down. But we can still get some numbers through the German site. According to these statistics there are 36 people every day who play it. For a comparison we have to use the Planetside 2 numbers of Xfire. These tell us that there are 217 players each day. Now some math: 217 -> 10.000 | / 217 1 -> 46,08 | * 36 36 -> 1658 This means that MWO probably has something between 1500 - 2500 active players. Let's be nice and go with 3.000. Even less than Dust and the game moved from Beta to Release 8 days ago. So that's dying too, despite still receiving updates.
Another one on the list is Blacklight: Retribution. We'll use Steamcharts here once again. It shows about 1.100 players online during peak times, not counting players not using steam. So I guess it's safe to ay that it still has maybe 2.000 - 3.000 players. And it's considered one of the best F2P-games of 2012. It's also receiving a PS4 version in the future. So apparently this game still makes enough money to cover for this. It got a new content patch at the beginning of August btw.
Now this wouldn't be fun at all if we don't compare it with numbers of the big games, would it? We'll go with the latest Call of Duty for this one. Stats... |

It's not dead yet, use to be much more right around the official release. 11,000 and now it's down to 3k-4k and it may go down even more if we don't get anything promised in the EVE trailers in the next couple of months. |

Eve-offline stats again:
Players around the official release was something between 6000 and 7000. Now 4 months later we are 2.000 players down. So what? Not unusual. Every game has more players around release. Planetside 2 had something between 25.000 and 30.000 players at release. This was at November 20th 2012. |

Personally I don't dislike it and I think the concept of battling it out on continents and not having to find a match seems very interesting. But then again this has some problems: Who is the winner in a never ending war? Nobody. I hear the servers even get reset every now and then. You fight for nothing. You can't even fight for winning. Your main base is invulnerable. So it just goes on and on.
I guess this would work better with Dust 514 where owning districts has a real effect on the bigger Universe of Eve Online. Would be like holding Sov in Eve. But in Planetside 2 it doesn't seem worth much besides fighting just so you're able to fight. That's why I don't play Planetside 2 anymore. |

I guess we'll always have the die hard fan base. Getting and keeping new players is another thing though. How many console gamers are aware that the game is getting updates every month? How many of them may think, that the game will always be in it's current state? Dust 514 has one thing working for it though: Eve Online. Eve Online makes the news. It always makes the news. The players always do interesting things and news websites write about it. So of course. Like Eve Online Dust now needs some time with it's die hard player base to become a game like Eve Online. Then it's time News websites will write about Eve Online battles and they will also write about Dust players who fight in these important battles too then. We're already getting there: Molden Heath Revolution and Arzad. That's a start. At some point people will read the news and they will read it's F2P. Then they will probably try it out. And when it has enough content when this happens it could get a whole bunch of new players. But for now I guess it's all about patience. As long as CCP thinks the core gameplay isn't ready they probably won't release bigger content like PvE. I think it's a shame though. |

In terms of burnout Dust is also the same like all other F2P games. These games don't have much content at launch date by nature. It just comes over time. The players have to be patient. MWO players are still waiting for Community Warfare, Warframe players are still waiting for the story and more level variety, and Dust players are still waiting for PvE. New weapons and suits/mechs is something players of all games are waiting for. |

MWO has been dead for a while, and Dust is following suit fairly rapidly.
I think it's funny that you say F2P games, but then only list the crappy dead one's like Dust..er AR 514.
How about some other F2P games like - Path of Exile, Dota 2, LoL, TF2, WoT, War Thunder etc.
Good on you though for mentioning Warframe which is topping out at almost 5 times the number of players as Dust.
I'd love to see CCP turn this around, but they have to decide to make something unique instead of trying to do the same thing as everyone else - less well I might add.

Planetside 2 needs A VERY GOOD PC which costs a lot of money and most ppl don't have that.. when it comes to PS4 it will really shine and i believe it will be the best shooter with BF4 and Killzone from what i've seen...
p.s. if i had a good pc i wouldn't be playing dust..so now i'm waiting for ps4 |

Eh, whatever. From what I've gathered over the years of playing f2p games here and there people tend to quit playing them for on occasion and come back whenever they feel like it. Why? Because they're free. They don't have to 1) pay 60 bucks, 2) pay a sub, and in MMO cases 1&2.
P.s. ditto on thinking ps2 looks like ass. |

All I can say is MWO is pretty good but it gets a little repetitive, however the mechs handling systems are fantastic.
Warframe is a very well polished game and looks great. The PVE is enjoyable I love the waves on defence missions. Unfortunately the PVP is secondary, though I'm sure it has potential.
Dust - has the most potential out of all games mentioned. The core is beginning to shape up ok, level design shows amazing progress going off the last maps and sockets we got.
Dust could learn a thing or two from Warframes pve. Then again I like that game so I am bias.
If Dust development shapes up well over the next couple of months then the game has a bright future. I plan to keep playing for the foreseeable future. |

Yea the only next gen MMO that seems interesting to me is Warframe. Other than that, I got my fingers crossed for Dust. Also considering that I'm putting much time into this game ( I rarely play anything else, GTAV is coming in the mail but I won't be knee deep in it like that), I would love to see it flourish. My actions hold more weight in Dust, IMO, than any other MMO FPS title.

Stats are easy to find because it's a steamworks game and the Multiplayer is listed on it's own. Now look at that: http://steamcharts.com/app/202990It peaks at 20.000 players online at the same time. A multimillion dollar game from a big publisher has the same player numbers like Warframe, a small F2P-title. We can conclude that Warframe is doing pretty damn well then.
Not to defend the COD games or anything, but those numbers are only for the PC version. The console versions have vastly more active players than the PC version, at likely a ratio of 20:1 (or more, since it's unlikely too many PC elitists will be playing a COD game).
Just look at the sales. PC version of BO2 sold less than a million, however the combined PS3 and 360 sales is almost 25 million.
360 sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70716/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/ PS3 sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70715/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/ PC sales - http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70717/call-of-duty-black-ops-ii/
I would guess that both the console versions of the latest COD game vary from 150-200k active players at one time, possibly more when you consider that almost 25 million copies have been sold and it is still one of the most popular online games in circulation today.
