Yeah, those after burners do help a lot when you need to get away. If you also notice, a lot the shots the were aimed on hit but because of the distance they kept blowing up before they reached him allowing him to survive much longer than if the missiles lasted a bit longer. |

Was using accelerated. Even with alot of range, its still not long enough for air to air combat.

Thanks, I agree that it is very difficult to fly and shot because of the aiming and DS blocking targets. But that's what makes Dropships special. It's not a vehicle anyone can simply jump into and expect how to use it. There's a sort of art to it. And those that take the time and dedication to learn the mechanics feel proud of themselves to be part of a small group DS pilots. You feel like you accomplished something everytime you get a kill, you know you have skill when you hit double digits, and when you kill multiple tanks while getting shot at by forges and swarms... it makes you feel GODLIKE!!!! |

Notice that the ADS is extremely powerful in the right hands. I don't know whether you guys fly with the DS3 or KBM, but with the DS3 I suck at aiming with the ADS pilot turret. But you guys handled it extremely well, very impressive.
With the upcoming addition of turret ammunition, however, even with such a high accuracy rating gained from months of flying, it might be insufficient to make up for a limit on how much you can fire.
-I propose we remove the two passenger seats (leaving only the pilot and two gunners) in exchange for extra armour plating/shielding and a boost to ammunition supply. The gunner spots should be sufficient for an ADS to perform a minor transportation role, and it will certainly highlight the basic/logistics DSs' roles as troop transports.

Nice video!
I wonder if Assault/Logi DS are being temporarily removed in 1.5?
CCP Wolfman wrote: Similarly, vehicle roles will be reduced and then re-implemented properly once the base interactions are working well.
If so, with the removable turrets feature, I hope base dropships get the option to fit a pilot turret. Then when Assault DS are re-implemented they might be able to get some stronger gunship type bonuses or even a medium turret.
Oh, and as made evident by the video; aiming the pilot turret can be... challenging. Soft lock on (the turret gimbals a couple of degrees to help aim) would be nice (not just on DS but on vehicles in general; LAV have similar problems).
Regardless, I look forward to more potent turrets with the advent of finite ammo. |

swarms don't do mcuh to drop ships, as you can see here they just hit the after burners and are gone long before the second salvo hits. |

Yep, I love when I get an orbital in a 3 man squad, me an my gunners. Far from a 1 kill every 15 minutes. What is your usual pub games scores by the way guys?
I usually end up with something like 7-0 when playing solo. sometime less sometime more. Best was something like 12-3-0 if I remember. |

Dumb fire missiles make extremely poor air-to-air weapons. it's fun to see the explosions when they auto-detonate at their max range, but pretty doesn't equal effective. With the coming finite ammo it will be silly to even attempt it.
CCP will have to add another turret type or really buff the blaster range if dropship dogfights are going to happen. Perhaps an air-to-air lock-on missile that has high speed and short range (not that I want to encourage dropships to fight amongst themselves).

I'd have to completely disagree with the idea that missiles make extremely poor air-to-air weapons, they are the most effective and accurate weapon you can possibly put on your DS (if you're using XT-Accelerated's), however if by "dumb" you mean the ones that fire in 3's then yes i would agree that they are practically useless, but in dogfights the XT-Accelerated is basically your best bet if you want to win. Impressive, great teamwork.
But I think what this shows most of all is how pathetic the dropship's (or any small turret's) AV capability is. So, here's a fix I'd like to see: remove the -50% vehicle damage done by small rails. Given that rails are a pain to aim at small moving targets (ie, infantry), they will almost exclusively be effective and used to AV purposes. Also, here's my ideas and roles for all the turret types:
Missiles: Good against infantry and vehicle, though not excelling at either.
Hybrid: -Blaster: close range, high damage vs infantry, slightly strong to shield -Rail: long range, high damage but needs pinpoint accuracy, good for large targets/ AV, slightly strong to shield/
Not released: Projectile -AutoCannon: similar to blaster, very strong to armour -Artillery shell: similar to rail, very strong to armour
Laser -Pulse: similar to blaster/AC, no ammo but heats up very quickly, very strong to shield -Beam: Charged beam like the scrambler (able to be held) or assault forge gun (cannot be held), perhaps given a duration to sweep from target to target?; long range, no ammo, quick heat build up, very strong to shield |

It's the best turret available, but it's still a very poor choice.
I'm guessing there were 90% misses in the first two minutes of the dogfight, simply because slow moving rockets fired from a moving platform at a moving target at mid to long range involves as much luck as skill.
I'm not aware of any unguided a2a missiles in use today, though fighters do still sport guns. |

I understand that doing something like this with blueberries is a bad idea and all vehicle drivers/pilots agree, but why does it have to be that way? I'm sure they can develop some sort of system that makes it clearly obvious for blueberries what the pilot wants them to do. |

When someone tries to use a blaster on me i just laugh. While i do agree that right now our only good choice is those Accelerated's, and that there should really be more to chose from, Skill is actually pretty much 100% needed in leading the shots, and only a very little is actually luck. Since every shot fired from my DS is consistantly the same rate of speed, over-time in using it I have learned how to effectively lead the shots on moving dropships, and I can now say that I can confidently take out nearly any dropship that wants to try to run away from me, because i know how to keep landing the shots into their back-side even while they are dropping from the sky trying to escape. It's a lot more exciting that way, too. |

I remember blam mentioning trying to make some form of lock on turrets, but hopefully we'll have countermeasures before they come in, otherwise dogfights will come down to who has the highest DPS. And as serimous said with sufficent practice you can get a good idea of where that missile will go. |

Oh yeah you have to do it with an organised squad or it doesn't work. And one single DS can cover two squads if the pilot is quick enough, skilled enough, and ballsy enough. This makes me sad. I understand that doing something like this with blueberries is a bad idea and all vehicle drivers/pilots agree, but why does it have to be that way? I'm sure they can develop some sort of system that makes it clearly obvious for blueberries what the pilot wants them to do.
Its actually easy to fix. Blueberries need to be in team chat. The main reason we dislike blueberries is because they dont listen... unfortunately the reason they cant listen is because either they are not on correct channel, or simply do not have a mic. If they did, I would be more than happy to play with blueberries. |

If you observe the video, when that blaster Python got involved, it had to get very close, close to the point where hitting with missiles is much easier. It's not a good dogfight option. Blasters are best reserved for infantry use. You could probably use stabilized if you wanted but that is PG heavy.

It was to show how ridiculous air to air combat can be... the ability to run away about your shields go down makes it very dificult to kill dropships. It also shows how vehicles should fear Dropships. |

2 shield extenders active shield hardner shield booster 1 adv accelerated missile pilot gun 2 std accelerated missiles 2 small payload, a 7% and a 10%
This is my newest build, and seams to be working ok so far, just with the cost of running them I cant really play around with fits too much and really work out what works best without burning more isk than I have, any helps appreciated |

Snugz like you said all we need now is some video of Condor ATG Work. Dibs on left turret.
The ADS is maneuverable enough to dogfight non-ADSs, and missiles are the most skilled weapon given the need to get direct hits with a slow projectile. I've just found that the difficulty men's that two equally maneuverable dropships means one can always disengage and rep if it wants to.
I'd prefer dogfights remain skill based. Heck, I want everything about dropships to be pilot skill based.
Watching the video makes me long for the sky, but I don't miss being broke. |

If I wouldn't have seen those youtube-instructional videos for dropships, I would have believed this to be a fake. Damn. VERY GOOD. After a month of practicing I still hardly land on stuff that is smaller than my own dropship (like the 3 rings on that one map).
You seem to have mastered all the maneuvers.
Can I be your padawan? :) I think If I had dropship as a realistic goal I would practice more and different stuff. The videos are pretty good.

I would love for some of you DS pilots to roll with a well drilled and well meshed Air Cav team watching the carnage from a dropship on high is glorious.
Massed Teleport Attacks (aka using drop uplinks to spawn bomb and area), co-ordinated drops on multiple levels, aggressive drops, tactical drops. On a minimally defended objective you can have everything blue in under 30 seconds and be out of there and in the sky in another 30.
