Dumb fire missiles make extremely poor air-to-air weapons. it's fun to see the explosions when they auto-detonate at their max range, but pretty doesn't equal effective. With the coming finite ammo it will be silly to even attempt it.
CCP will have to add another turret type or really buff the blaster range if dropship dogfights are going to happen. Perhaps an air-to-air lock-on missile that has high speed and short range (not that I want to encourage dropships to fight amongst themselves).

I'd have to completely disagree with the idea that missiles make extremely poor air-to-air weapons, they are the most effective and accurate weapon you can possibly put on your DS (if you're using XT-Accelerated's), however if by "dumb" you mean the ones that fire in 3's then yes i would agree that they are practically useless, but in dogfights the XT-Accelerated is basically your best bet if you want to win. When someone tries to use a blaster on me i just laugh.
It's the best turret available, but it's still a very poor choice.
I'm guessing there were 90% misses in the first two minutes of the dogfight, simply because slow moving rockets fired from a moving platform at a moving target at mid to long range involves as much luck as skill.
I'm not aware of any unguided a2a missiles in use today, though fighters do still sport guns. |

If you observe the video, when that blaster Python got involved, it had to get very close, close to the point where hitting with missiles is much easier. It's not a good dogfight option. Blasters are best reserved for infantry use. You could probably use stabilized if you wanted but that is PG heavy.
Snugz like you said all we need now is some video of Condor ATG Work. Dibs on left turret.
The ADS is maneuverable enough to dogfight non-ADSs, and missiles are the most skilled weapon given the need to get direct hits with a slow projectile. I've just found that the difficulty men's that two equally maneuverable dropships means one can always disengage and rep if it wants to.
I'd prefer dogfights remain skill based. Heck, I want everything about dropships to be pilot skill based.
Watching the video makes me long for the sky, but I don't miss being broke. |
