My PS3 is the same model as you describe, Gestahl. Probably about a year old. Any other freezes can be handled that way, even others from Dust, but twice now it's been not enough. Perhaps "damaging to the system" has the wrong connotations. I kno...

That's why I suggested basing it on the percentage of Total HP between armor and shields. Of course, since then Iron Wolf has suggested several other viable options, so I'm not sure it's needed.
