Missiles like that are also meant to travel for miles to strike something travelling at mach 2 or 3 several kilometers in the air. This is one of those cases where realistic weapons aren't helpful to the discussion. We can't have mach 2 dropships ...

Laser turrets are almost certainly coming, just not currently implemented. Giving dropship pilots a driver operated gun, however, is a bad idea. -1 for that.

Activating mods on vehicles requires you to hold down R2 to bring up the radial menu then select the item you want, then release R2. It's pretty touchy, and it's easy to end up not selecting anything.
