You only get points if an enemy dealt the damage. Also, there's a certain amount of WP you can earn in a period of time. I'm not sure if you're hitting that or what the cap is.

Oh also, if you're in ambush and the enemy is camping the only spawn point, hit square instead of x. You'll spawn randomly like usual. Also, grab some drop uplinks. They help a lot. And joining a corp helps a lot too. You can learn a lot in corp...
