Greetings!
I would preface this "Top 10" with the following:
I love Dust. It's truly a thinking-man's shooter. A couple months back -- after hours of farming info via the forums -- I decided to try my luck at the "glass cannon" shotgun scout build. It's been fun, but it was more fun (and perhaps more viable) prior to Uprising. My primary objective here is two-fold: 1) to offer a word of warning to those new to Dust since Uprising and 2) to open up dialogue with others who may be considering a respec.
--- A Scout Shotgunner's Top 10 Reasons not to be a Scout Shotgunner ---
01) No significant scan radius advantage (why's it called a "Scout" again?). 02) No significant speed advantage (Calamity Jane is just as fast in Logi gear). 03) New aiming mechanics (it's getting better, but you will still miss. And then you'll die.). 04) Optimal shotgun range (now spitting distance). 05) Flanking is far less effective (unless militia or AFK, your flanked prey now takes 2-3 times longer to kill). 06) Non-Scout shotgunners (you'll often be OHK'd before you can land your 2-3 shots). 07) Tactical ARs. 08) Submachine guns. 09) The Heavy/HMG buff (try circling a post-buff fatty). 10) Nova Knives are more fun and get more chicks.
Caveat:
Please note that this post pre-dates the long rumored cloak mods. If such a device were scout-exclusive, then I'd take back this Top 10 with apologies. Until then, however, I see no reason not to respec as a Logi. Keep your 10 m/s sprint with stacked KinCats, boost your survivability with piles more HP, and be a better "scout" with an active scanner. An instant upgrade from nuisance to threat. And a viable build for facing off against hardened targets in PC.
That's my take, at least. Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback.

From one shotty scout to the other I agree, for the most part. The passive movement speed of logi is a bit slower but the sprint speed is really what matters.
That all being said, the scout dropsuits currently have no place. But I agree, if cloaking is made exclusive to these I take back all the mean things i've said :-P
On that note, I don't see any reason for this NOT to be an exclusive module once released. |

Hi Nova! I've yet to rival the experience of Calamity Jane or Morathi, but I'd be glad to share my two cents with you. What thoughts on the topic would you like to discuss?

agreed. The stamina itself is shameful. Yay. my proto scout can run a new york block and then he's pooped.
biotics give you a 1% per level increase. 1%? We call that skim milk in the midwest.
Then the minimatar- supposedly the fastest scout with sub 100 armor only gets 2 low slots. so- basically we'll give you nil armor, and still keep you slow enough it doesn't balance out. Even with 2% complex kin cats and effacy (another 1% joke) you aren't the fastest scout. That would be gallante.
so pretty much a head scratcher.

I love CeoPyrex vids!
Now imagine Pyrex in the same pub match against the same random noobs ... but this time with double the shields, triple the armor, the same sprint speed and virtually no drawbacks! That would've been crazy, huh? That's a Logi Shotgunner. That's Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley. And that's my point.
To quote your source (since I'm wrong), scroll to 6 min and 24 seconds.
Nonetheless, you're absolutely correct in that a scout shotgunner can and will perform well. My focus here, however, is more to challenge the practicality, consistency, and viability of the build in the long run (i.e. against equally skilled, organized opponents).

* Shotgun from 4th level takes 3 point blank shots to down STD Assault. * He counts OB into shotgun kills, nice. * He just takes kills from his team mates. That's where majority of his frags came from. * He's playing against noobs that are not noticing shotgun and don't even turn around when he packs two slugs in their back. Try doing that in EU servers, facing full teams of KBM tryhards who turn on a dime and headshot you with their TAC Duvolle.
Seriously. Try shotgunning against good players in shield buffed PRO suits. It was viable in previous build, it's not viable now. Damn, it's 100x easier to get them down with SMG. And he even says it in the video you linked, LOL, he says "shotgun is underpowered now". And it's true. You could have two-shot heavies with CRG-3 previous build, you need to point blank STD heavy 4 times now, and you better be hitting his ugly face.
He says "get a shotgun, put it on a dragonfly", while his fav suite of the match was Minmi MK0 with complex shield extenders and ADV shotty. And he still managed to die 9 times in that. LOL
I used them heavily before and I will say this: shotguns are borked this build. Why?
Because it's easier to get kills with knife, than with shotgun, from 1m away. That's why. |

ok ok you're right. When you bring up the auto healing logi shotgunner with speed mods it's just as fast but better in every way. It's not the shotgun it's the suit, yes. But however you are wrong about one thing, the sig is very important. I've got scout level 5 : ) you can just sit behind walls right next to objectives and you'll never pop up on radar, it's amazing.
But I'm still all for lowering their sig more, increasing scan range, adding a 2nd equipment slot again? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Maybe scouts should all get a 5% sprint speed per level bonus instead of sig radius, and then lower all scouts sig by 25%? add a 2nd equipment slot because I miss my tech 2 scouts.
If we give them more solts they will be broken, but I think more equipment is ok. thoughts?
OH but I don't think the shotgun is bad, AT ALL. he almost got 50 kills, if you buff the shotgun more he would of got 60. The weapon is fine.... Shotguns are fine as they are no changes please. Breach maybe. |

Can't enable the module for x seconds after combat and can't shoot for x seconds after coming out of cloak. x can be lowered and by skills never to equal 0 but highly invested sp should be able to get it fairly low. Dev's can define fairly low however balance dictates.

Actually they buffed how much speed you get. 5% bonus at lvl 5 kinetic to each module, what got nerfed from last build were stamina and recovery. additional stamina from what used to be old yellow catalyzers disappeared completely, and green catas now get 2% addition to recovery and total stamina per module as opposed to 5% additional stamina and recovery to your base suit rate a huge nerf. hell last build i had 400+ stamina on my vk0. now i only have half that on caldari logi. granted different base stamina amounts but still there's some adjusting to get used to.
I believe the point of the thread is how its a bit tougher to do what the scout used to do when there are other just as viable options in different suits. Cladari and Galente logis are prime examples. With 5 low slots you could be a running and gunning machine in Galente logi with either 2 red 2 greens and a pg module or 3 red 1 green and pg module. Cladari wise, to make everything fit on my suit it requires that pg module (2 reds one green and pg module). It take more to do the same as a scout SP wise but the benefits are 600 shields and equivalent if not faster run speeds (or what i do, 588 shields one lvl 3 melee stim, rep tool, stabber, nano hives, shotty, nades, 2 red stims one green and one pg module). a major factor when shotgunning at close range, survivability kicks in when an enemy can't peg you to death throgh your shields at larger distances or extreme close range.
Furthermore, I have noticed if you run while meleeing you can melee as fast as you hit the button, none of the clunky "let me swing my elbow at you and reload it to swing again" movements. having a spare slot on galante for a second green stim is huge! you can litteraly beat a heavy to death in a mater of 2 seconds, hell i do it on caldari with one green pack and i can swing 3-4 times in under 2 seconds. with the micro fibril stim at lvl 3 thats 148 damage a swing, thats 592 damage in 2 seconds. if your shotgun misses you can literaly baby seal club most suits to death. Don't belive me? try it. run and melee at some one hard and fast, ask my enemies I melee more in this build than any other previous build and wreck people. Ive knocked down some heavy hitters from good corps too. Hell if they read this go ahead and post if you got "stung" my little caldari bee suit fit.

On point 1, Scan Radius DOES need a change, because right now, other suits are too good, AND the Scout is too weak. But you get a MUCH better Scan Profile now in comparison with other suits, so Scouts can do stealth a lot better than we used to. Unfortunately, that's balanced by the fact that we can be matched by a Logi in any area we choose to invest, so it would be nice to have that little extra scan radius buff so we have a decent range of abilities that work well together.
But as for this:

Cloaking isn't a "rumour", it's been outright stated as a plan by the devs. It's intended - at present - to be an Equipment item, meaning it'll be available to everyone but Heavies. There will probably (hopefully) be some added benefit to equipping it on a Scout suit, though.
What we need is more Scan Radius, and a lowered radius on other suits. Keep the Light Frame as-is, drop all other non-Scout suits, and bump the range up on Scouts. Not TOO far, but just a bit. |

I would have agreeed with OP ,if i didnt start playing shotgunscout again last night,I do agree with the lack on aim mechanic as it tough to hit people whiel strafhing and while the enemey is move as well, but that isnt the most important, the suit takes alittle more awareness to use, planning your route to get in and out of the situation is key.
Also if anyone wants to start scout shotgunning pick the minmatar, the other isnt vaild to me any more with how few high it has for shields, plus winmar's movement speed will save your ass. |

Start stacking complex range amplifiers on a gallente prototype scout and your passive scanning range gets pretty good. The speed advantage may not be that great, but they do get more endurance so they can sprint more often. I will admit though what sucks is how useless profile dampening has become. With everyone only having a 10 meter default scan radius you can't even really detect a heavy sneaking up on you, so your 25% profile dampening is pretty much useless.

Right now you have to be dead on with your shot or else it completely missed which is quite a trick now that they improved strafing.

Hmmm...I must respectfully disagree on both points, good sir.
1) A larger spread pattern would mean fewer pellets on target for well-placed shots. If the spread were opened, SG users would likely want to revert to the former pattern once CCP squares away aiming, hipfire and latency issues.
2) Nova Knives are awesome and super ballsy, but they're still a side arm. Introduce Nova Sword, Nova Halberd or Nova NunChucks as primary weapon. Then we'd be comparing apples and apples :-) |

As a shotgun scout, the things I must keep in mind are getting in close and being able to deal huge damage in a short amount of time.
Getting in close is quite a trick, since scan profiles and profile dampening is very poorly explained, if at all. Sometimes I mark a guy on radar who happens to be behind two walls, sometimes an entire squad fails to appear on radar even though they rest within my cone of view. I have absolutely zero idea how scanning and profiels work; as such, I do not know if, as a stealthy shotgun scout, investing in profile dampening is worth it at all.
The other is the spread pattern. Right now, you have to be VERY close and dead-on in order to maximize damage, but thanks t the wonky aiming introduced with Uprising, and how it continues to be unreliable post-alterations, this is a tricky thing to do.
I don't really care if other suits can go almost as fast as me with more health. I just want to be stealthy. Scouts suits should have a large passive bonus to profile dampening (forget scan radius) and there should be a very good explanation of how dampening and scanning works. |
