Greetings!
I would preface this "Top 10" with the following:
I love Dust. It's truly a thinking-man's shooter. A couple months back -- after hours of farming info via the forums -- I decided to try my luck at the "glass cannon" shotgun scout build. It's been fun, but it was more fun (and perhaps more viable) prior to Uprising. My primary objective here is two-fold: 1) to offer a word of warning to those new to Dust since Uprising and 2) to open up dialogue with others who may be considering a respec.
--- A Scout Shotgunner's Top 10 Reasons not to be a Scout Shotgunner ---
01) No significant scan radius advantage (why's it called a "Scout" again?). 02) No significant speed advantage (Calamity Jane is just as fast in Logi gear). 03) New aiming mechanics (it's getting better, but you will still miss. And then you'll die.). 04) Optimal shotgun range (now spitting distance). 05) Flanking is far less effective (unless militia or AFK, your flanked prey now takes 2-3 times longer to kill). 06) Non-Scout shotgunners (you'll often be OHK'd before you can land your 2-3 shots). 07) Tactical ARs. 08) Submachine guns. 09) The Heavy/HMG buff (try circling a post-buff fatty). 10) Nova Knives are more fun and get more chicks.
Caveat:
Please note that this post pre-dates the long rumored cloak mods. If such a device were scout-exclusive, then I'd take back this Top 10 with apologies. Until then, however, I see no reason not to respec as a Logi. Keep your 10 m/s sprint with stacked KinCats, boost your survivability with piles more HP, and be a better "scout" with an active scanner. An instant upgrade from nuisance to threat. And a viable build for facing off against hardened targets in PC.
That's my take, at least. Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback.

If you're up to it, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on shotguns in greater detail. I haven't had a chance to try them yet personally :(
Hi Nova! I've yet to rival the experience of Calamity Jane or Morathi, but I'd be glad to share my two cents with you. What thoughts on the topic would you like to discuss?

crazy space 1 wrote:I just went 25/7 with shotguns, and ceoprex goes 48 kills with the shotgun in this video.. one sec I'll fin it. anyways, your wrong http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtHoNQSpt20Watch this and really tell me you think shotguns need a buff. In on the other hand speed boosters cost more sp than most skills and yet they resently nerfed how much of a bonus they give. Scouts should be a bit faster with modules fitted.
I love CeoPyrex vids!
Now imagine Pyrex in the same pub match against the same random noobs ... but this time with double the shields, triple the armor, the same sprint speed and virtually no drawbacks! That would've been crazy, huh? That's a Logi Shotgunner. That's Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley. And that's my point.
To quote your source (since I'm wrong), scroll to 6 min and 24 seconds.
Nonetheless, you're absolutely correct in that a scout shotgunner can and will perform well. My focus here, however, is more to challenge the practicality, consistency, and viability of the build in the long run (i.e. against equally skilled, organized opponents).

Delirium Inferno wrote: Not a damage buff though, there has to be a reason to use nova knives over shotguns. But what it does need is a bit better spread. Right now you have to be dead on with your shot or else it completely missed which is quite a trick now that they improved strafing.
Hmmm...I must respectfully disagree on both points, good sir.
1) A larger spread pattern would mean fewer pellets on target for well-placed shots. If the spread were opened, SG users would likely want to revert to the former pattern once CCP squares away aiming, hipfire and latency issues.
2) Nova Knives are awesome and super ballsy, but they're still a side arm. Introduce Nova Sword, Nova Halberd or Nova NunChucks as primary weapon. Then we'd be comparing apples and apples :-) |

Delirium Inferno wrote:I still think it would be nice if they introduced a variant that had a little more spread.
I agree 100% Delirium. And if they do, I'll be among the first to use it. I've been missing shots all day every day since Uprising.
Isn't there a Dev thread dedicated to new weapon suggestions? Thought for sure I saw something along these lines from CCPWolfman.
+1 to a variant shotgun with increased spread. Very few will claim that Breach SG variants are effective; how about an opposite-of-breach SG? |

Keeriam Miray wrote:Basically shotgun is plasma weapon, not projectile... just exchange "number of pellets" into "area of effect" - that can solve the problem with damage, spread & hitting targets. Shotgun skill instead of reducing spread can expand it, so leveling up will make it easier to use, more deadly at close range. That means anything in "area of effect" will take full damage of plasma shot.
"plasma does not have a definite shape or a definite volume unless enclosed in a container; unlike gas, under the influence of a magnetic field, it may form structures such as filaments, beams and double layers"
+1 for thinking outside the box, Keeriam. A short-range BFG 9000. I like it :-).
