Get off your damn mountain and come and run and gun on the ground
Those objectives don't cap themselves and trust me it's way more fun then sitting up there in your lonely nest all match. This isn't going to be a true fps without the quick-scoping guys, so come and join the few that do.
I have seen more people running and gunning with the sniper and I say, "kudos to you." But to everyone else, what is better than to use a sniper to out CQC a shotgun or headshot that annoying protosuit guy face to face.
I just see to many people being lazy on mountains and it makes me sad that they decide not to use the sniper to its full potential like they do in other games in other games.
So come on down and turn this into a real fps

Sadly this is a major problem in most "team based" FPS games. I could understand 1 sniper was in back and was actually giving out locations of key targets. Now when a whole team does it because they are getting red lined, why not just leave the game and find another game? Surely you can't find sitting behind the red line that fun, now can you? |

Yup, hell, got into a game earlier, my whole team was getting redlined so all them switched to sniper loadouts. 2 other PFBHz and myself was the only ones to have a positive KDR and we actually pushed out of the spawn to attempt to get letters. I personally think that if KDR was removed out of the game, players might not do this as much. |

Personally, CCP should do one of these.
Make the red line something you can't shoot from and get shot in and after some time if you haven't moved from the red line, it'll kick you out of game or kill you. This will force the red lined team to push out.
Or
Make it so that red line isn't there anymore and make it have random spawns of where it use to be. That away it'll give all the players a random chance of making it out of there and if they are getting red line they'll have a slim chance to push out of it. |

See this is really ignorant, The Dust/eve universe has a class and race that specialize in the sniping department, and in team games i'd expect 1 or 2 snipes in the hills or buildings to support ground troops,.
Run and gun snipers? really? i'd rather use a shotgun.....
and to further my point....I hill snipe, i have a utter **** kill death ratio, i sit around most of the match searching for those kills...and YES i actually enjoy it...
And if i had a headset, you bet your sorry arse i would be giving away your ground troop positions, i see you all running around down there.....
oh, and get rid of red line......i want to be targeted! |

I use an SMG as my sidearm, and roll into battle behind the assaults, Then I use my sniper to pick off reinforcements from afar and thin the enemies numbers out before reach the point we are capping, which means less enemies in the firefights with my assaults

Plenty of 'good' snipers out there that not only kill key people, but call out hostile movemtns, incoming RDVs, and loads of other information.
It's the ones who do it purely for camping purposes or to pad their KDR that hurt the good sniper's reputations. TSOLE runs dedicated 'Sniper Squads' in some matches.. constantly mobile, scouting, then sniping. then moving along to cover next area.
It's a proven, effective military tactic that, unfortunetly, leads to over-abuse in pretty much every FPS.
Solutions like removing the Red Line, or making it an area you can't shoot into or out of are not bad... but something as simple as providing a greater amount of cover across a map would prevent alot of the kills, or... giving some variety to maps, make twisted, turning urban maps, indoor maps, or best yet... give us destructable enviroments so we can personally take care of those little sniper's nests ourselves! |

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Snipers are the scourge of this game.
Sniper is the only class that I hate as both friend and foe. I get frustrated when I'm shot by a sniper. And I also get frustrated when I see one of my team members as a sniper.
No other class makes me frustrated in both ways.
It annoys me that we still cater for this scrub class - why do we still have them in FPS?
When Dust finally releases, I'd love to see a "No Snipers allowed" game mode. I guarantee it would be full to bursting! |

I appreciate what you're saying, but consider this - Would you rather that Sniper who got your back, be an Assault or Heavy, standing shoulder to shoulder with you on the ground, capping objectives? I know what my preference would be. I'd trade 5 snipers for 1 heavy any day of the week!! |

This time next year we'll probably be seeing proper, mature, squad configurations & tactics being used regularly.
* Heavy with HMG or Forge, full frontal attack. * Logistics, probably with mass driver, moving up behind the heavy (possibly walking backwards quite a bit to keep an eye on the "6") * Assault with AR out on the flank, killing enemies who are too focussed on the heavy * Stealthy scout with SMG and sniper rifle somewhere near by
Most of the time the scout will be getting surprise close-up kills with the SMG. However, when the squad encounters an enemy sniper he'll switch to the sniper rifle and counter-snipe.
Another "on the ground" sniper tactic might be: you've capped B and are moving to C. The scout is keeping an eye on B, and pops any reds who go for the re-cap.
The "in the hills" sniper will be part of the support squad with the tank driver, dropship pilot and dropship gunner. |

One thing is, and I've been playing FPS games for almost 10 years, 9/10 snipers are always useless. The main reason in objective based games, they sit in back and lay in wait till the objective is being taken than take a shot. Those snipers may have good KDR but are rarely usefully for the team. I'd rather take a sniper that moves with the group than a sniper waiting in back. |

Cant really get into close quarter cause snipers in close quarters fail pretty hardcore in this game.
Mid-long distance snipers will get owned by Tactical Assault Rifle players, simply because aiming is slow and the headshot hit detection is quite low...
Very Long Distance snipers are the only viable snipers in the game at the moment unless you do as was suggested earlier and go in with a SMG as your sidearm. But personally, when i roll a sniper class...I want to snipe.
I can understand your frustration, but come on guys...its just people having fun the way they want to. Just because they arent playing exactly like you play, doesnt make them the *** of the earth and useless piece of crap. |

The good ones I dont mind or rather dislike. The ones that go 25-0 are actually doing their jobs. Its the ones that gor 3-0 or 5-0 that really should think about taking up a new profession.

Actually, yes I do, thing is most people mistake real life sniping and video game sniping. If you want I can break it down to you.
Sniping in the real world is like this. Each sniper is assigned a spotter. The spotter is the the eyes and voice of the sniper. He or she listens to the spotter to confirm if the target in the line of sight is in a good alinement and if the settings are far for the shot. Sadly, doing this on a video game doesn't work though since 1, both players would have to be snipers and 2 it leaves your team down 2 members now for objectives.
Now, video game snipers don't work like everyone wants them too, 1 sniper per team is more than enough since his or her job should be spotting targets and giving out locations. Though last time I seen a sniper actually do that was back in Battlefield 1942 and most of the time now I see snipers as nothing but stat padders, people trying to act like a real world sniper, or players trying to do those ******** quick scope head shots.
Now with that done, there are modded rifles in the world, or as others call them DMR. These DMR which one of the most common kind is the M4A1, it is a single shot rifle that fires 1 round as fast as you can pull the trigger. Those snipers are trained to move with the group to provide mid range back up support were other snipers from longer range can't. |

You're forgetting one very crucial fact...In Ambush especially, the sniper will have a far better KDR than you will, you may get twice as many kills, but chances are you die 3 times as many times...therefor the sniper is more useful to the objective than you are. |

I don't need to to know how you play to say the typical 5/1 KDR of a Sniper is more beneficial than the normal 2/1 KDR of a Run and Gun player.
5/1 KDR is +5 your team, +1 Enemy Team for a +4 Net gain for your team
2/1 Is +2 Your team +1 Enemy Team For a +1 Net Gain for your team.
I HIGHLY doubt you are posting a 5/1 KDR on the ground, HIGHLY doubt it.
In Ambush, those "Typical Snipers" you are all Bitching about are worth more to the team than you are.
You can certainly make the argument for Skirmish though. UNLESS those snipers have a birds eye view of the objective locations and are skilled enough to pick off any opponents trying to capture it.
Defending your objectives is just as important as capturing your opponents. |

New people sure are a lot of fun.
The are so many intangibles when it comes to fighting on the field is the thing. Someone may very well go 2/1, but if those 2 kills prevent 10+ deaths then there you go. This fact cuts both ways. A really good sniper will take out high priority targets and swing the balance of a fight on the ground. Bad snipers will plink a few heads, but be unable to prevent their blue dots from getting slaughtered on the ground since they end up out numbered in their gunfights due to their teammate camping in the hills AND not doing anything to support the troops.
Snipers are just like any other role. There are good and bad players. I think the big difference is that when a sniper is bad it is, in a lot of ways, worse than being down a man on the field (especially in skirmish). |

I am a Ninja Scout, running around the battle field real fast capping objectives placing remote explosives with an SMG in my hand. I am not a killing machine however my WP are within the top 3 most games.
Remote explosives are real fun and useful at keeping bad guys from taking back our objectives.
IMO CCP needs to give the snipers something better to do up in those hills other than snipe. Give the snipers some "Scout"tools like Binos to laser target enemy positions and then they can be useful.
I do not blame the person choosing to play as a sniper because it is how they want to play, I do blame CCP by not making them more useful to the team while they sit up in those hills sniping.
Until CCP fixes this issue they should change the name from Scout to Sniper TBH.

It isn't being lazy to sit on a mountain or something. When you're running around like Sleepy Zan, you spend less time shooting and more time running around and also more time being dead. It's a fun thing to do if you have someone competent to play alongside, but it's hardly the best way to snipe in a public match. |

Alright I never said this is the right way to do it, but it can be incredibly satisfying. I'm just reminding people that there are other options, really the main reason why I use a sniper over something like an AR or a shotgun is that it can deal with a large variety of situations once you work to overcome its limitations.
One thing I have noticed while playing this beta is that another person on the ground can be tremendously more effective then that person being in the mountain away from the conflict. That will probably change when we get much bigger maps of course, but now the sniper on the mountain is really the one relying on his team to get the job done and win the game rather than the other way around. Yes, camping with the sniper is very effective when it comes to defending objectives but right now ,mainly do to the size of the maps I would say, the snipers role is very much overrated. |

Actually when you put your scope over someone the red dot will light up even thought they are out of the reach of your normal scanning range. |

Enemy dies, objective doesn't get capped. Sounds like a good start. If they wait until AFTER the point is hacked, then you'd have an argument (and sometimes, they do - either because they suck at positioning or because they deliberately let the point get hacks so teammates can farm points hacking it back - only they usually suck at helping when the team is recapping the point, so it doesn't work. |

Scout in the hills spots and paints the target. Guy on the ground grabs his mass driver and launches in the right general direction. MD round tracks in on the painted target and boom!

Yep this is the idea or combine the Scout on a hill with the future Mortar like weapons.

How is quickscoping good sniping? You don't ******* run around with sniper rifles and shoot people. You stay in one spot and move to another. Quickscoping is so STUPID! I can't stand it. Snipers are supposed to be far far away from the main battle accounting for gravity and wind, they don't go to the front lines quickscoping. |

It isn't fun, it's stupid, an exploit, added into games, only COD really because people want to abuse it. This game isn't a militairy simulator, but it's not some arcade game where you can jump spin around in a circle and quick scope. That's not what sniping is and it's a shame COD has done something like that to sniping. |

why is there yet another thread on this? we already know! people don't like having a team full of snipers. we get it. and yet, it seems that the team with skilled and properly used snipers win the majority of the time. so, snipers are not as horrible as you people say, at least when they play like a team. another waste of a thread on a topic that is complained about entirely too much. |

I just started sniping with my alt and realized how fking easy it is. So easy to double tap someone since sway settles in say spot for second shot. I can run cheap/free gear and drop adv/proto gear pretty easy.
One of the things I realized when sniping is i dont care if we are winnig or losing because I am not actively invovled in the ground game to take or defend objectives.
Normally I just get irriatated with snipers on other teams but since I started sniping i realized that every sniper on my team for the most parrt takes away somone from the ground game. Once you start getting 3/4 of these snipers scrubs on your team it because a disadvantage. I can't tell you how many times i have counted 6+ players on my team just sniping regardless if we are winning or losing.
I get it there are a lot of scrubs witih no gun game out there and they jack off to killing people while camping from the redline and head glitching. My question is do you really thing ccp is going to leave sniping/head glitching/redline camping the way it is.

Look people, while I don't aprove hiding in the safe-zone. A sniper's JOB is to hang back and provide support for his squad. That includes taking out targets, calling out positions, and making sure the job gets done. It's abusing the sniper to quick-scope! When a sniper gets in close he's to use his side arm. (I personally prefer an SMG for my side arm.) Keep in mind this is NOT Call of Duty. I'd compare it to Battlefield, and Star Wars Battlefront, it's a strategy game. I do agree it's very annoying when people hide behind the red line, and should definitely stop.

R F Gyro wrote:This time next year we'll probably be seeing proper, mature, squad configurations & tactics being used regularly.
There was a FPS I used to play... I forget the name, but they implemented a limit on every role. This limitation only allowed a certain number of players to be a Sniper or Assault class for instance. I feel this could solve some of the '5 snipers on a hill' effect people complain about during matches. It worked in that game atleast...
But now that I think of it that could be disastrous.
Dust 514 players spend their SP to effectively use their particular combination of equipment, dropsuits, etc.. It would be frustrating to be a fully-skilled, fully-geared Sniper and join a skirmish only to find you are stuck playing a different loadout due to a cap.
As of now, if players spend their hard earned SP to play as a Sniper then let them play as a Sniper, however that pans out. Until the chat system matures, as mentioned, it makes it difficult to coordinate with the rest of the team about enemy positions or objectives. This renders a sniper useless in the grand scheme of things as they are generally heard, not seen, by design.
It would be nice to see sniper's using a loadout that incorporates some recon or other "on the ground" tactic, as mentioned. Perhaps fitted with those respawn point units (the name escapes me) placed behind enemy lines or some other strategic position, in addition to being skilled in for extra stealth and mobility.
I hope you're right about next year.

Sleepy Zan, I would like to say first that I've had the pleasure of going against you in the past during closed beta and I have the utmost respect for your marksmanship. Im not even going to say your kdr but more towards your average wp per match that I've seen. Your a great at run and gun tactics and your team supports you and you assist them in kind.
Now with that out of the way I have to say Im ashamed of you right now for starting this thread, it's something I would expect out of the influx of our newer players but not from you. No one, not even you have the right to tell anyone how a particular load out should be played. At the moment Im still the best sniper in my corp and I will hill top, front point snipe to keep enemy snipers off my squad mates as the situation dictates. I also run my sniper in assault suits so if sniping goes south I can run in for front line service, If someone enjoys the idea of sitting on a hill top the entire match, do what I know you can do well and shoot them, that's what i do. |
