So.
Things are happening! At last.
Now, I have a few questions that I hope someone will be so kind as to answer. I'd also like to share my initial impressions. Alright. I lied. I have many, many questions, and when the Arkena Wyrnspire feels threatened or confused, it releases a stream of threadnaughts into the wild.
On to the questions, then. A note beforehand, though - a fair few of these are based off the demo that we have. We only have limited information, after all. Questions
- Comrade Rantanplan said 'less MMO' in favour of a focus on shooting. Is this less MMO compared to DUST, an indication that MMO won't be much of a focus, or an indication that this will primarily be an arena shooter?
- The demo is 6v6. Whilst I completely understand that it's just a demo, is this the match size we should expect, or will we be seeing the familiar 16v16 (or something else)?
- AFAICS, there are six classes to choose from. Has the fitting system been axed? Can we expect to be restricted to preset and rigid classes, or is this likely to be more of a guideline?
- The demo has instant respawns. Is the new game going to be faster paced? Is ISK going to exist as a game concept?
- Leading on from the ISK question, a simplified skill tree was mentioned. Will a progression system exist as a substantial part of the game?
- Will we ever see planets again? Or open spaces?
- Finally, where is the game depth likely to come from? What will distinguish it from generic space shooter?
Initial impressions, going off the footage of demos that my carefully planted operatives various DUST folks have uploaded to youtube:
Shooting looks decently fluid. We can't really know that much about how it'll perform in practice, of course, but it looks pretty good. The graphics are a substantial step up. Particular highlights are the gloriously green Gallente shotgun blasts, and fights certainly look quite hectic. TTK is not instant, with the exception of headshots from snipers (from what I have seen). Personally, I consider this a major pro and something familiar from DUST - space CoD with instant kills would not appeal.
Not sure what to think about 'generic race' though.
Everything has to come to an end, sometime.

These questions seem a good starting point.
One of Dust's best aspects was its complexity and variety. Being able to create loadouts and customize not just your appearance, but your suit characteristics with many extreme variations even within one role and race.
I would hate to see the end product become so bland that Nova gets lost in the saturated FPS market.

I think the thing that terrifies me the most about Nova is that it may just be a shallow and generic arena shooter.

Borderline dealbreaker for me here.
Fitting was half the fun of Dust.

Suit hp levels seem to be (maybe) equal to base suit hp levels from Dust. I know I shouldn't read into this, but it does make me think. If suit modules are even a thing, perhaps it'd be better without the option of hp mods at all. They are just boring and too attractive for people. |

What made Dust great are the things that made it different.
The FPS genre is overloaded, and most of it is straight shite.
Dust's problems were largely it's lack of mechanical polish, not it's complexity.
It is one thing if they are starting off with this bland direction to make a foundation to rebuild what made Dust great. Its another thing if they stick with flavorless game play just to play it safe.

Yeah. I really, really hope they haven't butchered the fitting system.
I've literally gone through hundreds of fits in my DUST time and tinkering was great fun.

Borderline dealbreaker for me here. Fitting was half the fun of Dust. Wish I could remember what Rattati said, but I think he did imply there would be customisation options. I'd love to know how far this goes though. We could have just weapon and equipment choice, or modules as well. I'd love to know. |

Wow. Axing fittings would be a huge mistake. One thing that actually made the game somewhat unique compared to other shooters. |

In the demo (and yes, I appreciate that that is not necessarily the state of affairs, which is why this thread exists - asking for clarification) you can pick from 'classes' and those are your exact fits. There's no changing them. A few articles, like the polygon one, heavily imply this as well.

I sincerely hope such a feature was purely for demo purposes.
Can you imagine how much playing I would do if I could customize in a FanFest Demo?
None.
I would spend all of my time tinkering with fits

Rewatched the interview with Rattati and Frame. Rattati says the progression would have the "same freedom" but is not meant to be as confusing. Lots of options and then deciding on specialisation (edit: talking about progression). Expand into racial specialisation (again, progression.
This doesn't exactly answer the question, but I'm hopeful it implies a certain amount of customisation. |

To my knowledge, there is no intention to remove modules. How you get the modules may change. Will say more when sh*t is finalized and I can torture a legal nerd into giving me the green light to talk more.

'progression of personal power' worries me. It is currently killing the DZ in The Division (not enough GS brackets), and IMO it was one of Dusts biggest failings. I hope I've misinterpreted what you mean by it.
Something is killing new player retention.

I am cautiously optimistic. The 6v6 demo is just "see, we can run around and shoot people!" and I have heard that the Unreal Engines are pretty ridiculously easy to just make a basic shooter. My guess is that this is solely for the purpose of the convention. Actively turning off fittings, vehicles, and making the interior tightly compact means that people can actually play it.
Imagine having the new CCP baby and it being literally "DUST on PC, upgraded." Is a 3 minute demo going to show off the concepts of vehicles, planetary combat, fittings, ISK rewards, skill progression? Hell no, that would have slowed it down ridiculously to the point that it would not have worked.
I am worried but no more than we should all be. Be concerned and interested but don't go loading up the bomb shelter with poptarts and pornography.
