While slow to anger and occasionally indecisive, they are also capable of harnessing enormous resolve when truly tested.

I think they are pretty good at their role: heavy hitters/suppressors. The caldari does kind of get the short end of the stick with only two weapons receiving its damage bonus, one of which is the sniper rifle which lacks a real purpose, and laughable shield recharge and delay stats. I think the swarm damage bonus being added or moved to the caldari commando as well as an adjustment to shield stats in general would bring the commando class into near-perfect balance with itself and other classes.

Played w/ GA and MN Mando both before and after the recent changes. Massive improvement. They feel fantastic. Since the changes, have also test driven CA Mando (Level 5) and AM Mando (Level 4). These also feel great.
Especially enjoying AM Mando ScR+ASCR. So much potential for wrecking face. Less than 100k SP 'til Level 5, then maxing out ScR tree. If you see me in battle, you'll probably catch me running this fit.
* Note: I've heard I'm supposed to use the Laser Rifle. Will try it out in a few months when I have more free SP. Nearly 100M SP now. 100% of it is in infantry, and I still have stuff I need to skill into.

1. Disagreed. Why? Calmando + Sniper Rifle + ARR = Flexible. Calmando + Sniper Rifle + Swarms = Rooftop Camper. Plus, lots and lots of players have skilled Minmando strictly because of the Swarm bonus; I imagine a switcheroo would tick off the vast majority of those players. You'd need a really good reason to do that.
2. Not sure one way or the other on the details above, but my AM Commando does feel kinda tight on resources. For instance, I can fit max damage amps and ferros, 2 Advanced ARs plus a proto hive on my Galmando. I can run the same loadout with two Advanced CRs on my Minmando. But when I fit my AM Commando with the same loadout and Advanced 2 ScRs, I can't fit any hive at all (not even a compact hive). Is this to be expected?

Unfortunately this idea has already been touted by Rattati himself (swarm switch). I skilled Minmando for that very reason exactly like you say, and I'll be annoyed if when it changes without a way to unskill.
However, "everything is good" changes when you remove a bonus from one of the suits someone says is good without stating what it will be replaced with to keep the status quo. That annoys me more.

It's not like the Minmatar scout where it gets a bonus to knives specifiably.

Sniper rifles are not a functioning weapon/role, the calmando is not versatile in fact it's almost anything but. If a sniper rifle functioned a bit more akin to one from destiny (where it both felt nice to shoot and was useful at specific tasks) it might be a bit different.
As it is, the galmando can run ar, shotgun & plc - the AR is the 'default' weapon here, with the PLC being the most common pairing due to its anti-infantry anti-vehicle uses, the shotgun can come into play but the commando is unsuited for it though powerful when using it (this really screams for a shotgun design that allows it to function at ranges other than 'i'm touching you' with dps other than 'lol i've killed you because i'm silent until I fire that first shot and I can fire two more in under 1.4 seconds).
The minmando runs combat rifle, swarm launcher & mass driver. It probably should not be getting the bonus to swarm launcher, but because it is, it's seeing an absolutely unparalleled amount of popularity. The 'default' weapon is combat rifle with a mass-driver for anti infantry purposes or a swarm launcher for av... some commando's also sub in a PLC just because of how general purpose it is. Its shield stats are quite terrible, but many people opt to myo stack or do other strange things.
The ammando has the potential to run both a scr & a laser rifle. It doesn't do nearly as good as an assault with either because of the heat bonuses. I usually see ASCR & swarm launcher on amarr commandos... laser rifles sometimes come into play for general anti-infantry shooting (with the ability to switch between short & long range fighting). It's not 'bad' but it could really use an AV weapon. Not trying to brag but i'll disclose that my alt is Malleus Mallificorum, a member of PCLAS/PIE for over a year and something like 3rd place runner up for the laser rifle officer weapon (got one of the weekends with a server outage)... and at one point probably one of about maybe ten people in all of dust who had amarr commando skilled to level 5 - I do have some knowledge of what I'm talking about.
The calmando has the potential to run both a rr & a sniper rifle. sniper rifles are prettymuch non-functioning weapons, with so many disadvantages and drawbacks that one usually has to be well removed from any actual combat to use them, and even then hit detection and lines of fire are both practically non-existant. So the cal-com is left with the rail rifle, which has pretty awful hipfire, or the ARR which is popular because it's practically broken. The suits shield stats are bad, regen takes a long time and shield inhibition values literally do not function (most guns aside from the combat rifle can stop recharge at 150m+ without damage mods). In order to compete with assaults that are running rail rifles (and 3x damage mods) a cal com must run at least two - which wouldn't be so awful if was an armor tanked dropsuit, but it isnt - it functionally forgoes almost all defensive stats just for a chance at being competitive with a single gun, and it usually isn't.

CalMando I think it's OK, same thing for the MinMando. Just the AmMando, too less CPU/PG, when you want to fit in the same idea of other (damager at the left and proto weapons) you can't take a good nanohive (just advanced like the X-3 or the K-2).

In no way am I a commando expertGǪ but I think the if we could get weapon variability up it would help the commando out. Amarr does not get much choice for where their bonus applies. Movement of Swarms to Cal where it should be would balance out if Min had an AV weapon. Right now Galmando gets the most versatility in weapon choices that match bonuses.

TLDR: IMHO The commando is mediocre to bad at just about every role, but lacks the slots to enhance more than one role at a time. An assault is second best in almost every role and has the slots to enhance two or three roles to best. An extra slot, or better internal bonuses for the Commando (such as increased module effectiveness or better inherent repair) would give the commando a better fitting role.
I've been running a Gallente and Minmatar Commando almost as long as they've been out. Mostly because I love the PLC, but also because swarms. The Commando's are improved, and I really enjoy the improvements, but while playing the Commando, I feel like an Assault can do anything the Commando tries to do (fitting wise), and do it better with less compromise.
Basically I feel that the Commando can only be fit to do one thing well at a time, while an Assault can do 2 or 3 things well at a time. The only time I've felt that a Commando could be fit for two purposes was the short time while the APEX Galmando had an extra low slot. With that extra slot suddenly I could be fit for reps AND mobility, or tank and reps, or damage and mobility, and be good at both.
When I run my Gal or Min Assault, I feel like I can be fit for many purposes, and I hardly ever feel like I have to compromise a fitting just to make things work.
Sure Commando's can have two light weapons, but what is the point if an assault can kill vehicles and infantry better because it can fit grenades and tank and speed, and repair and damage mods all at the same time?

^Prettymuch hits the nail on the head, the only real difference is that while the assault is generally 'really good' at one weapon and performs 'great' in a few areas at once, the commando is technically 'really versatile' but its versatility often not as useful when combined with the drawbacks that the suit has.
It has come 'close' but its still not quite there.
