To those of you who do not know, a Rugby superstar was taken by the San Francisco 49ers as a prospect.
In no way do I want to hate, but:
He is too slow- a 4.5 40yd (I ran better than that in HS) He catches the ball with his body, not out stretched hands. He has a language deficit in technical Football language and everyone in the NFL is fast- and 70% are faster than this guy!!!
Sorry RUGBY, but you're hero is about to get blown up by the NFL! |

I really hope that he excels I really do, but the Pacific is a small pond compared to Rugby and the NFL. I want to see MERICA give you all a good RUGBY challenge in the upcoming Olympics and as an ambassador to the sport I truly welcome Hayden.
I know, after watching his training films, that if he learns to reach out for the ball, and can learn "football" language a good coach could make him a situation player-other than special teams (punt returns and kick off returns).

Eh... it's to reduce neural deterioration which happens to ALL sports players who specialize in impacts. More specifically any impacts to the head.
Yes, Neural degeneration. That's slow brain damage over time, where the nerves gradually hemorrhage into one another.

Your superstar is going to get his ass handed to him. The NFL is not a place for a dreamer-it is too fast and too violent.
Rugby is a very simplistic game, but not as gay as soccer-I'll give you that, but everyone in the NFL is Fast and a 4.5 in the 40 is slooooow, hell there are 290lbs defensive ends that are faster and quicker no less.

Bro, there is a massive difference between Rugby and Rugby League.
Also keep in mind your NFL stars have two teams (offensive and defensive) and use up all their speed and stamina in short sprints. Not to mention you have downs and three timeouts each half with breaks each quarter and a 30min half time.
In proper Rugby (not league) you only have two halves 40 minutes each. Each team only has 15 a side with between 6-8 reserves. We take no timeouts unless injury occurs and have a small break in our half time. Each player has to be an all rounder and had to learn how to both tackle and run the ball. Not to mention rucks, mauls and brawls are frequent.
Did I mention we don't switch players every two minutes?
Edit: Also no downs, its 40min continuous and we don't use pads. Only mouth guards and the occasional soft leather helmet.
I find your lack of heaviness... disturbing...

The padding leads to more violent collisions.
The NFL benefits from a few hundred years of terrible American history where a byproduct was genetic breeding. It's not even close. You could give a rugby coach 2 weeks with his choice of NFL players and they'd make the best rugby team in the world look stupid.

My opinion is that you don't know what will happen.
A 4.5 40 is nothing to be sneezed at. There are plenty of players at wide out who run that, and its about way more things than speed.
According to at least one article, he has soft hands and is considered fast.
Not to mention one of the 49ers defenders is a Brit discuss thrower who had never played football til he joined the team.
Athletes are athletes, and the best can play at high levels in multiple sports with training and effort.
You have no idea what he is capable of, and he wouldn't be the first rugby player to play in the NFL.

American Football players simply aren't exceptional compared to elite athletes from other sports. At least not to the point where they possess some kind of innate advantage.

OH and he runs upright like a target! Jarryd Hayne's 40 yard time was faster than most of the Running Backs at the recent combine: http://www.nfl.com/combine/tracker#day=saturdayYour alleged '40 yard time' was hand-timed BS. Just like all the other highschool '40 yard times'; This is just embarrassing. Agreed on the 40 time. Most of the RBs train for months to get their 40 time honed for the combine. At their best most hope to get in the 4.5s.
Emmitt Smith probably ran a 4.6 - 4.7 if you'd made him run on a Sunday morning before a game and he's the all time leading rusher.

I saw him rush for 150 yards with a separated shoulder vs the NY Giants with a Division title and 1st RND bye on the line. There have been many backs more talented, but so far none have been able to do it as long and as consistently as Emmitt.

Why yes, just look at the weak, soft tackling in the NRL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq2Xb3BQZyY
Also, the champion Seahawks team copied Rugby tackling to create literally the most dominant defence in the history of the NFL.

I wouldn't call Jarryd Hayne a 'legend' per say.
He is a real game changer and knows how to run a ball when given the space. But NFL is a totally different ball game. He can run the ball through defenders 1v1, but the realistic chance of that happening in any NFL position is non existent. He would have to learn how to truck and trailer with O Liners or wait for blocks, because he isn't THAT strong to take on 3/4 nfl defenders at once, who are more savvy to the idea of just grabbing his jersey to pull him down.
Those are the things he wouldn't understand coming from a rugby background.
p.s I hate him cause he's from NSW

I cannot watch the TUBE due to copyright rules, but this is a reach of cosmic dimensions-"rugby style" means not using your head to avoid head injuries so it "safer"...lol
The Seahawks have a great "D", but there have been others that where "more dominant" and some of them where old school and a hell of a lot more violent-the NFL has toned it down over the last 20 years.

As a life long Niner fan I have been following some of the stories, etc. about Jarryd Hayne. He is actually the second Rugby star the Niners have on the roster. Lawrence Okoye has been on the practice squad for the past two years and this year will likely be a make or break year for him.
As far as Rugby vs. NFL talent I thought I would post this pic. This is from recent workouts in Arizona that included current 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and several NFL receivers. Jarryd is the one in the back.

He will likely not make a roster because everyone at the NFL level has exceptional measureables. He is without question an impressive athlete, but so is everyone else when you reach an elite level. Believe it or not, technique and decision making actually do play a part. There are a number of mediocre (by NFL standards) athletes who made careers for themselves with effective release, stemming, route running, defense reading and superior hands. I've always been a little offended by the belief that practice and technique were somehow ancillary to performance. I was a decent college running back who found playing time by being an effective blocker, pass catcher and runner with exceptional ball security (zero lost fumbles in my entire career... my only impressive stat). Not having a football background is definitely going to hurt his chances. Oddly, I really miss running into people at high speed. Now the closest I get to beast mode is chasing people around with a chainsaw...

Reps at 225 is a poor metric for strength and isn't the least bit predictive of football success/likelihood of earning a roster spot. Squat, dead lift and particularly cleans are more predictive of football success, but relative levels of experience and technique dilute the value of these measures. My reps at 225 would place me in the top quarter of running backs at this years combine and I was never anywhere near good enough to earn a training camp invite, much less a spot on a roster. Anyone want to wager some ISK I could do at least 18x225? I'm at work so it will have to be on a smith machine, but I can post a video :). |

Jamaica has a very strong track tradition, but their dominance in short and short-middle distances is relatively recent. Moreover, the population is predominantly of West African descent, a genetic group that has done particularly well in sprints. Small countries have been able to do well in events in which they focus, that require limited infrastructure, and require a particular configuration of attributes (boxing, wrestling, weight lifting, some track events). Team sports and/or those that require more complicated training infrastructure have traditionally been dominated by larger countries, with the US doing particularly well. I would say that the US has more than a representative number of internationally known athletes, although this likely owes to the cultural power of the nation as much as their sports prowess. This is particularly surprising given the US has a relatively weak soccer tradition, a sport with more international presence than almost any other. |

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA!!! There have been literally DOZENS of former Div.I College Football players who have attempted to play Rugby professionally over the last 20 years. Every single one of them has failed miserably. Once again, the vast majority of players in the NFL (let alone College Football) aren't even remotely exceptional compared to elite athletes from other sports.
From the perspective of a combination of strength, speed and explosive power, the best NFL players are among the finest athletes on earth. I don't think there is another team sports league where a handful of players could make an Olympic 100m semi-final or final. NFL players have won more than 20 gold medals in Olympic track and field events and the fastest man over 45 in the world is a former NFL wide receiver. Regarding your comment about Div I football players who attempted to play rugby at the highest levels, ~1.6% of Div I football players will make an NFL roster, so Div I football players are not very representative of the level of talent in the NFL. |

My comments were not intended to be jingoistic in any way, merely an attempt to show that even a great athlete is unlikely to succeed at a complicated sport they have limited experience in. I added additional clarification regarding the general athletic quality of NFL football players, which is objective high given that no other league has produced so many Olympic medalists in a sport other than that played by said league. Any international takers for my ISK bet (20x225 on bench)? I'm in my late 30's and I only weigh ~190lbs these days, so it's kind of a toss up if I can do it or not. |

It's the metric used by the NFL to measure strength.
Quote:P.S. I doubt the OP can run a properly timed 40 in 4.5. Chris Johnson ran in the mid 4.2s and was competitive in college with a guy who would later win a bronze medal in the 100 at the Olympics. The NFL uses an electronic start with a hand timed finish, by professional timers. A good rule of thumb is to add at least .2-.3 seconds to any hand timed 40...more if the person doing it is inexperienced.
The NFL uses a hand-timed start off the first step.
The only reason why the test isn't fully automated is that it would drastically increase the times and the 'freak athletes' running 4.3 would suddenly be running 4.5+

Some moron claimed that College players who weren't good enough to make the NFL would somehow easily walk into professional Rugby and dominate...except that no former player has successfully managed to make a professional Rugby team in the last 20 years. |

And all you could retort was "no one outside the US knows bo jackson.
Usain bolt, undoubtably the greatest sprinter ever. Roger Federer is undoubtably the greatest tennis player to date (17 grand slams ) Manny pacquio might be pound for pound the greatest boxer ever. Horace Gracie was a juijitsu god. Im not saying that there aren't greats from other countries, but look up any "top 50 athletes" list and you will see it dominated by american athletes.
Btw, bo jackson won back to back mvps from 2 different sports. Just beacuse you have not heard of him, doesnt make his achievement any less great.

Chris Johnson is a good point of comparison given that he has been timed both electronically and using the NFL hybrid method. He was ~.2 of a second slower in high school than an eventual Bronze medal winner in the 100m (he came in 4th at the state meet). Had he specialized in track rather than in football, he would have a decent chance of qualifying as an Olympic alternate or as a member of the 4x100. By any account, that is freakishly fast. Moreover, I repeat my assertion that NFL players have won ~20 gold medals in track and field events. There is no other league in the world that can make a similar claim. |

No, Johnson was hand-timed and timed with and the NFL's supposed 'hybrid method'...which (big surprise) gave exactly the same result.
"Meantime, TSX was told that the times announced by the NFL again will be the result of a hybrid process -- with clocks started by hand and stopped electronically. This yields results that are slower than purely hand-held clockings and faster than fully automated times.
What's the big deal?
The disparity in results among those processes could create a culture shock with football players who, historically, believed elite runners are timed in the 4.3-second range.
The fastest time announced at the combine this century was 4.24 seconds by East Carolina (Tennessee Titans) running back Chris Johnson in 2008. That happened to be both his hand held and hybrid time.
Based on empirical data kept for the last few years, his fully automated time might have been as high as 4.49 seconds -- hardly elite in football circles."

Look at his Florida state meet results, where he was timed electronically, coming in fourth behind eventual Olympic medalist Walter Dix. Some of Johnson's electronically timed high school times are in line with the qualifying rounds of the Olympics. The guy is fast...

The only NFL players drastically larger than their Rugby counterparts are linemen, whose role is to slowly waddle around the line of scrimmage slapping and shoved at other fatties for 5 seconds at a time. The players actually running around in the open field are virtually identical to Rugby players.
For example, the top rusher in the NFL is 5'10 and 215lb, while the top try-scorer in Super Rugby is 6'5 and 275lb:

Agreed.
Not all lineman are slow. They have to keep up with Linebackers who are often rather quick.
Being a Steelers fan, one of my favorite all time players is a man named Dermonti Dawson, who played Center, was large, and ran a 4.5 40.
The only players that fit your description of slow waddlers are Nose Tackles in a 3-4 scheme, whose entire job is to take 2 lineman out of the play by forcing a double team, and enabling the linebackers to move around unencumbered.
That is one thing that I like about American/Canadian Football, that a number of different body types and physical attributes can still be effective given the right systems.

OH and he runs upright like a target! You assume too much. From what I have read, he is 6'2 and 226. The 4.5 speed is fine. His biggest problem will be learning a new game. The same would happen with an NFL player trying to play rugby. Different rules, different nuances to learn.
If he even makes it to the practice squad, he'll be special teams returning punts in a constellation of other really fast guys-he runs "rugby style" which is straight up and down-or upright!
He is going to get blown-up! |

Your NFL players wear padding because otherwise they will get "hurt" where as our rugby players do not. He is used to taking heavy knocks and shrugging them off. Just wait and see.... Just wait and see Rugby is a fierce game. However, do not underestimate the sheer speed and size of an NFL player. They are larger and faster than the average rugby player. For the record, I think this rugby player is a fine athlete and may just very well stick in the NFL. He has the athletic ability to do so. His biggest hurdle will be learning new rules. The same would happen to an NFL player trying to play in rugby. Both would need to learn to adapt. The only NFL players drastically larger than their Rugby counterparts are linemen, whose role is to slowly waddle around the line of scrimmage slapping and shoved at other fatties for 5 seconds at a time. The players actually running around in the open field are virtually identical to Rugby players. For example, the top rusher in the NFL is 5'10 and 215lb, while the top try-scorer in Super Rugby is 6'5 and 275lb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38sCGMihKKw
This guy is like "wearing a lot of body armor" in a fire fight, can't move and you are going to get shot at-a lot!
But if the whole other team is as big and faster than your "hero" then what-we got a couple of thousand of these guys here in the US that don't have "ENOUGH" to play NFL |

Fastest man in rugby is Carlin Isles ran a 6.83 60 yard.
My personal friend, because we played pop warner, and then High school and then College football against each other (Football, Basketball-he played track I played Baseball) his name is Michael Morris, now I'm just picking Mike because I know the quantity.
Mike played HS football at AYER high school in Ma. He then played at Syracuse University, if you follow rushing records and the NFL you may know his older brother Joe Morris, who broke Ernie Davis's and Joe Browns NCAA records and as well as setting the NFL rookie TD record at I think 22-but we're not talking about him.
HIs younger brother. Jamie Morris, broke all of the University of Michigan's rushing records-but we're not talking about him either.( if you know football look again)
Let's stick with Mike-a former strength and speed coach( under Gruden) for the World Champion Tampa Buccaneers and New England Patriots!
MIke, my friend, was so! much faster than Isles in the 60 he ran a 6.189-thats fast.
But this white 6'2 215lb guy caught him from behind-not once but twice!
Our dad's both wore the Green Barets.
If you don't know BO you don't know fast!
If you don't know BO then you realy need to watch this!

Really enough of the BS.
All you Soccer players, all of you rugby players-come meet us on the field!!
You cannot, because you are and have been left behind in the genetic evolution of man.
In 1775 when our English cousins met us at Concord and Lexington you were already 2 inches shorter and 20 lbs weaker.
You Aussies are nothing more than genetic criminals.
So you say we should not field our African American brothers-you are racists!
Our African American brothers know who the crazy mutherfuckers are, we lead with the head-
Bring you're sport to the "new world" under the of the Olympic banner and as we showed the Russians hockey team- we will show you.
Fuq the Olympics and play real football! PUZZIES! |

Alright you need to learn your lesson. Here is the video that shows how bad Americans are at Rugby. USA vs New Zealand (my country). Full game for ya bro.
USA vs NZL
Oh the All Blacks are the best rugby union team in the world.
And if you are too lazy to watch the game here's the final score: 74-6, All Blacks won. It was 46-6 at half time and after that we sent in the new talent and reserves.
So keep going in about how USA will beat us in Rugby ya ****.
I find your lack of heaviness... disturbing...

Damn straight, was really using my post to make a point that USA is a horrible rugby team when compares to the All Blacks, the Wallabies and the Springboks. Took me a while to find that game.
I will say this though, the French arnt that bad of a team when they don't cheat.

We are a large country, but it doesn't pay to be a rugby player over here.
Hell, it even pays better to be a soccer player over here, and soccer is no where near that popular.
Between baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, and "olympic sports," there really is very little demand for rugby here.
If you think the best athletes in the highest earning sports, if given the incentive to learn and play rugby, couldn't at least be competitive with the best teams elsewhere, then you have grossly over simplified the thought experiment.
