Like a staging ground near the MCC :) Something like this was shown in the original DUST concept but without the force field. It supposedly was put there by the MCC commander - a role that is yet to appear in game and who also was also supposed to be responsible for placement of turrets to aim his team. Something else that could aid a struggling team :) |

No random exploding, legitimate "you crossed, you're screwed ". It works and is immersive, which is a big bonus. It might be a bit more demanding of game resources, not sure.
In thinking about the 'redline problem' two thoughts that always come to mind are:
1) Do we really need to load that giant map into memory? Assuming that we still are, ofc, but it looks like it. We know the memory budget is tight, why not chop the map off at 200 m past the redline, just obscure it with some mist or something equivalent. If it gives us more frames it's justified imo.
2) How would New Eden corporations really write the contract for employing mercs? What features would we mercs insist on in the contracts? Besides immersion-for-free(There should be a reference document that mercs can actually read in their quarters or while hiding on the battlefield, as well as a 'Do you accept the terms of this Contract?' signoff button before every contract match(someday we'll have custom corporation contracts were we do the same thing for District Maintenance, harassment, auto-defense, etc.)), investing in re-thinking public contracts can prolly contribute to resolving some of our redline issues.
It's worth a second look for the immersion alone, but also for gameplay.

Move the redzone back, add the permanently scanned idea where the redzone used to be.
The MCC blowing you up, would be cool, but it's still the same as the timer... something to hide behind when you're losing/lazy.
Some of the maps would need the MCC pushed back, or some other spawn point further back. |

The redline should be a concord sanctioned boundary, everything within is an active battlefield anything outside is protected by concord to prevent the deaths of lets say civilians. Plenty of good ideas here! I especially like the having something to do in the merc quarters. As far as running low on resources, it's inevitable without going to the PS4. CCP plans on releasing much more content this year so I think they're getting better at compressing although I wouldn't mind more frames! Especially a CCP* one ;) :D aww snap! |

This ^ In fact, why not just remove the redline altogether apart from around the MCC?
What would happen if we actually use the gigantic maps that we do have? Would the PS3 melt?
If we open up the maps and only block around the MCC, we don't need portals etc to escape red-lining. You just "slip out the back" and do a huge flanking manouvere using fast LAVs. Redlining is only effective right now since you have a firing squad on one side, and "CONCORD" on the other. |

If that is the case then wouldn't it be logical to also add some civilian buildings into the red line to make look like they are livable habitats ie. small department blocks on both sides?

Graphical limits. If we can fix the rendering issues that seem endemic, we can squeeze more range out of the guns and potentially more background detail.
But one consideration is that the biomass outpost in line harvest (the towers) wouldn't actually be manned by mercs, but by civilians. And. When a shotgun is vomiting ambiplasma to kill a target you have to consider the residual hazards the mercs are creating.
Radiation, heat pollution, damaged facilities that can collapse/explode. Concord is there to enforce limits on persons whose antitank landmines are often low-yield tactical antimatter charges.

So yesterday i went into the enemy redline 3 times to kill a redline rail tank.
If i did this with this terrible idea in place i get concorded and the redline rail tank gets all the protection without any risk and can still ping me from the redline in safety.
Bottom line this is another safety net in addition to the redline.

I personally like to think the redline is the limit of range from the mcc that your mind can be transferred to a new clone upon death.
This would allow mcc's to fly around a large battlefield projecting an area where mercs can operate. Maybe in a future iteration of the game. |

Wasn't the redline already explained as being a kill-signal to the implant in the clone's head whenever they ventured outside the pre-determined battlespace? I like this explanation as it sort of expands on that, but only if there's no fundamental change to how redline mechanics work.
On the topic of MCC guns though, I'd love it if we had turrets we could man on the MCC specifically for Redline camping defense - not unlike AC-130 use in Battlefield. Just make it to where they can't be operated unless the enemy team has all of the objectives or something, that way you discourage AFKers chilling in the guns for the duration of the match.

The idea itself could be natural growth as we become more powerful. It's natural to assume we could find ways around any kill switch. So concord has to look to other methods and a off map blap cannon fixes the problem.

At least extend the redzone out further for dropships, smaller maps, you can literally not fly due to redzone being so close that it locks you into tank / forge guns range.

Let people get 3 warnings that refresh every 5 - 10 minnutes of gameplay. On your 3rd the MCC aims it's turret at you and just goes nuts.

It gets even worse then espc for vehicles because your only supply depot is in the back and you need ammo or you need to wait for your mods to cooldown because going out cold is the worst thing you can do with AV being about and invisible.
Why would your MCC target you? That makes no sense

How easy is this game going to get? I was under the impression people shooting in and people shooting out get the same warning.
Because you're endangering the civilians? Shooting guns too close to them...
Also hiding in the redzone is 1 of 2 things we want gone, if you bring out your tank you should keep it alive by avoiding the AV while they cooldown, some maps are big and have decent obstacles for this.
Not really sure how it affects the vehicles though... If you go in the redzone, you can't shoot and people can't shoot at you (more than twice, without being obliterated and potentially kicked from the match.) Currently you have AV camped on your redzone through some matches anyway, waiting for vehicles to be called in/driven out... The difference being that they wouldn't be able to shoot (safely) until you leave... With swarms you could reverse back into the red before they hit and get them a warning.

This isn't Ukraine Simulator 2015
While it is nice to say avoiding AV my tank cannot fly, swarms bend round corners and infantry gets around quick on some maps and if JLAV is about your not safe anywhere outside the redline.
If you are going to have a buffer zone then the redline needs to go back further but might as well move the redline back anyways and forc players to go 500m out to get the the area

Move the redzone back, yes...
Safest from jihaads in the redzone? no wonder you hate them, that's the easiest place to kill a tank with them, 20 seconds and you die, doesn't even have to ram, just stick to the side of it and everyone goes out in a blaze of glory.

You kill anyone while within the redzone you get concorded just like in EVE. Nothing fancy just stick to the the already existing structure of how Concord works withing the New Edan universe. this is the most sensible thing i can think to maintain/increase immersion while explaining the presence of a redline. two questions: 1) does CONCORD operate planetside? i may be missing something in the lore(theres a lot of it, a LLOOOTT of it) but i was under the impression that CONCORD kept to spacefaring affairs and left the little people on the planets to our own devices. 2) Rattati suggested redline deaths as CONCORD kills.. as CONCORD never aggresses and only acts in the defense of others to maintain the balance, this explanation breaks immersion a little. can you offer a counter suggestion to why redline deaths occur that makes more sense in-universe? My previous thoughts were that redline deaths could be explained by sleeper drone presence in the redline, but this is only applicable to absolute redlines, and doesnt work for a teams home base(because if there were sleeper drones in your homebase, why would they be attacking the enemy but not you?) i'd like to say i've got a good idea, but my best thoughts on how to handle this arent well formed at the moment. overall, great idea! cant believe i missed this one

That's actually pretty cool, thanks for that. I would love for the warning to say "CONCORD is protecting the safety of civilians in this area" And redline suicides would be "CONCORD kills" This goes on the list! Looking at what's been proposed so far, the final document outlining the terms of merc contracts is likely going to be defined by the needs of New Eden corporations, but as constrained by Concord law. If we really want to add realism, Concord and/or the empires will be taxing these legally sanctioned business activities. Each battle would require a permit, let's call it a 'Transfer of Operations' permit.
As we move out from high to null sec the contracts will have the Concord inefficiencies removed to allow more streamlined business practices.....
That might mean that in nullsec/PC there are no redlines. Sounds like a great place to be a civilian.

My point exactly...and besides which CONCORD does not actually police planets and is only sanctioned to act in space in retaliation to acts of agression, its not there to stop people from killing each other only to punish them when they do, couple that with the fact that contracts take place in 1.0-0.1 security space and Concorde doesn't even patrol in lowsec you are breaking stuff that works fine now as is in EVE on TQ when mechanics exist only to keep the team under the hottest pressure from being wiped out too early and make them squirm a bit.

Please to god make it happen ..... you could go as far as having a concord ship decloak like a Bolas and blap you on the spot say 3 seconds after you kill a red in the protected area. I would also go as far as having the protected zones kill friendly aswell thusly disabling red line snipers and rail tanks.
You could even say increase the protected zones by say 150 m if all the points are capped by 1 team .

the redlines for the attacker and defender need to be looked at entirely as well as adding redline "spots" where gross strategic imbalances happen to protect defender/attacker safezones. prime example is the train map 2 tanks can trap the team from escaping the readline because of lack of cover if ccp had the new maps in the map feedback section (hint hint) it would be easier to visually display my point.

Sorry, when I hear of anything concord related I immediately think of this youtube video from 8 years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiE8_pz013g
Back to the Thread at hand.
I like the idea of the Red Zone becoming a Yellow zone where anyone can go however any hostile act will result in a Merc BBQ. This would definitely cut down on redline snipers and Rail Tanks as well as those who redline others.
For immersion purposes I would suggest perhaps having Concord installations act like immobile sentries protecting this area.
At a later date it would be cool to have a small concord MCC to lay down the law for any violators. (Make a light show for everyone to see when someone violates the law.

I hate to break it to you but Dust 514 is part of EvE. Concord is like the United Nations of EvE. To deny their place in conflicts on the ground simply destroys a part of the Universe this game is set in.
Concord is neutral and could care less who is in the proposed yellow line (both hostile and friendly). But they have a Really F*** big stick to beat you with if you break the laws set by them.
An idea could be that you can run up behind anyone yellow line and blast them with a shotgun, but you should get BBQ'd for it. To reduce the abuse of this tactic, The offending Merc should get flagged for 5 minutes where he gets BBQ'd whenever he enters the Yellow Zone. After the Flag he can then Re-Enter.

I am very well aware of how Concord works. I fly with C.O.D.E from time to time so I know a good deal on what can and can't be done with Concord. Sounds like you lost one too many Jump Freighters to us =P.
The idea that crossing a line is punishable by death is stupid, running through the redline killing people is more resasonable (sic) but no less stupid.
Try running across the border/line of a military installation in an active war zone. People can still run into the red zone and kill people just you have a time limit to get the job done. It is generally agreed that the red line is out dated thus this is why the OP started this thread.
Fully 75% of the battles fought in Dust are in Lows Sec areas, not subject to Concord policies or even punishment for aggression.
You get security loss penalties and you contend with the gate guns. They are not much I agree however Just because Concord doesn't have ships in space does not mean they have no presence. The only place Concord has no presence is Nullsec 0.0 with the exception of DED agents and some lore related stuff. I thought that over 75% of the battles were Highsec based. I will have to pay more attention to that.
Thus I submit to the whole community that asking Concord to punish those you should have killed for being in your "end zone" is ridiculous in the extreme and should be put away along with red-line camping by simply removing the red-line.
Then you have a major issue of spawn camping which is a reason the Red line exists. Would you like it if C.O.D.E had a Dust corp and camped your MCC and ground spawn with a bunch of sentinels and logi? You would never be able to do anything. You are quick to yell "Remove the Red line" however please elaborate on your reasoning to do so. How do you propose to solve the issues that redline removal will cause?
I think that using the mechanics of Concord that Henchman21 suggested is not only lore friendly but something that can be done in a reasonable amount of time.

How about we remove the redline, but if someone gets too close to under the MCC, then random orbitals start dropping, killing just about everyone on the other team.
