Suicide dropships have become an epidemic. Every game I go into there is instantly a suicide dropship in the air that rams me before I can react. These dropships make it impossible to do any kind of serious operation with a dropship as all they need to do is ram you. "Well just shoot them down!" You say, well its not that easy. Most fit afterburners and run to the redline before you can shoot them down, even with gunners. "Well then just be more aware!" Not that simple either, I usually can't see them before its too late and they tap me anyway. If I do see them I know I can't do anything except dodge them which is really very boring and makes it so I cannot do any of my jobs.
This is a problem that needs to be fixed. It takes all of the fun out of dropshipping and negates the dropship role entirely.
After being rammed I found a random blue dropship on the street and decided I would just fly around. A rail tank started shooting at me and I thought f*** it let's see what happens. I dove full speed directly into the tank and it did absolutely no damage. This surprised me to say the least.
So how do we fix this? I have talked with some friends and arrived at a few conclusions.
Remove the collision damage from dropships hitting each other. You can still ram them and knock them into walls but it won't be an instant kill because you tapped them. This allows the victim to fight back without instantly loosing his investment.
increase the dropships scan range so at least we can see them well before they hit us. This won't get rid of the problem but will certainly help and at least allow actual pilots to continue flying.
reverse the impact damage so only the dropship that rams takes the damage.
Personally I think number one is the best solution. Anyway I made this thread to seriously discuss this because I have millions of sp into dropships and is where I got my fun in dust. Suicide dropships are ruining any fun I can have.
Inb4 "get gud scrub" "ramming dropships is the only way to kill them" "its actually really hard to ram another dropship" "f*** you I should be able to play how I want"

Agree. Sure it might feel cheap to you but imagine how AV specialist feel about you being in the air and having their AV be of little to no effect in taking you out.

Zero SP investment, Zero skill required, Can be done almost for free (unfitted MLT dropships aren't expensive compared to our 500k+ isk ADS). We're not mad that we're dying, we're mad because there is no counter-play to it, it's completely binary, you're either alive and have zero worries or you're rammed and instantly dead. If ramming just knocked us around there would be some player/pilot skill on both ends - they'd have to hope to knock you into a building or the ground or something while you'd have to try and recover from the impact.

lol wait, wait, wait, the OP is talking about being rammed in his tank by a dropship.
How can we accept bomb trucks but cannot accept dropship ramming? That's what I don't understand. So kamikaze planes are just wrong? Hey, its a part of war. Factions have kamikaze squads all the time.
So I think the guy should deal with it.

Oh wow you got me there! Whatever will I do?! Seriously, the point remains. What's the problem? Kamikaze is a part of this game and war.
So he wants to change something because he doesn't have Maverick piloting skills to evade the suicide dropship?
Taken further, it can be implied that he himself is camping objective (how else are you getting rammed by another dropship while you're in a dropship? You're not paying attention to the skies), terrorizing people below him, something like Judge would do.
So people find a way to get rid of him and we should know just say "oh yea, you're right! That's not fair! Lets change that!"

You can't be serious here. No man. This is a joke/troll thread. Agree. Sure it might feel cheap to you but imagine how AV specialist feel about you being in the air and having their AV be of little to no effect in taking you out. I am serious, its the ultimate anti dropship weapon. When a suicide dropship is on the prowl I can't fight back, I can't plan an attack strategy, I can't fight it. It would be one thing if there was atleast more of a warning but its an instant kill with little or no warning and its cheaper than any av fit.
Well it is cheap, there is no way to fight it, no way to run from it or hide, I either have to die or recall my dropship (nagtes the millions of sp I've spent into my dropship) which will then be rammed while I recap, (700k is)
Actually av specialists shoot me down all the time. Good forge gunners scare the hell out of me. Swarm launchers could use a hand but most of those guys want to both buff the swarms and Nerf the dropship. I'm interested in good fights, which I do have against av specialists that know what they are doing. There are danger zones that they creat so I can tactically withdrawal and the fights themselves become battles of skill where if either party makes a mistake it becomes fatal.
When a suicide dropship is in the air the entire battlefield becomes the danger zone and unless I get very very very lucky I'm dead. Instantly. No interesting battle just poof, two games worth of saving gone. It negates everything I have worked for over a year now and it sucks, I'm about ready to give up flying because I'll go bankrupt if I do.
Oh I also forgot to mention I had a friendly dropship ram into me today and kill me. How am I suppose to defend myself against that? There is no where to run, and I can't do even the simplest of jobs without the constant threat of being instant killed. |

Yet its okay if you fly around and use your scanners in a dropship to find people whereas mercenary scanners are terrible in comparison to DS scanners. It's okay for you to get in your dropship and place uplink at the highest point, raining down terror on mercenaries. It's okay for you to hover above objectives and assault players underneath you.
All those things people have to deal with, dealing with you. But a ramming dropship hitting you? Oh no! The buck stops there!

Anyone who dosent ads won't understand the issue at hand. Literally everything in this game can easily kill an ads if used properly. Most annoying on this very long list of ads killers is RDVs which literally spawn out of thin air in front of you and there is ZERO counter for.
The problem with dropship ramming is it doesn't take much of an impact to set an ads on fire. I would have no issue if a dropship at full speed rammed me and killed my ads because that would require skill to hit the target.
The problem now is a militia ds can barely graze an ads and bring it down. It's almost as bad as touching an rdv or mcc and boom your on fire, ads down.
A tank can easily kill a jihad jeep if he sees it. One shot on the REs and the problem is solved plus a tank can straight kill a lav about five times faster than an ads can kill another dropship.

Kamikazes flew full speed into their target to achieve success. They didn't tickle their target. It takes almost no speed to "ram" an ads out of the sky. That is the issue.

C'mon now. Push the bar from your chest. Grab a forge gun? Its not impossible to kill a dropship, and don't get me wrong I'd like to see swarms and plasma cannons become more viable at their roles. However I do not want to see them go back to 1.6 levels where all you have to do is lock and fire and destroy anything you look at. Av should be like any other role, where experience and skill are rewarded. That's another topic though.
To humor you, if your running your proto gear and I run up to you in my milita suit and touch you and you die, you would be okay with that?
The issue here is that these suicide dropships instantly kill my ship, they don't even have to be going fast, they just have to touch me. It's like my whole ship is made out of glass. If we reduced collision damage from ramming so that the suicide ship had to be going full speed or even afterburning to completely destroy a complex fitted assault dropship then I could consider it a more legitimate tactic like JLAV's. Right now its just bull sh-ít. |

So he suggest the damage should be given to them, hence he is seeking means on eliminating ramming dropships. Which means he's not trying to address the problem you're speaking of. He's just trying to save his own hide while he camp on objectives. It's simple.
And seriously, its not that serious. A DS ramming you will take some of your life. If you know how to maneuver and have reps, you can get out of the area, rep and return. People ramming him with a DS probably more than likely have REs attached onto them. I have been hit by a DS before and my DS just didn't blow up on impact.

That suggestion was more for friendly suicide dropships that ram you. I'm not saying any of these ideas should be implemented right now I was just spitballing to get some discussion going. Actually Izlare lenix is right on the money see my last post.
What you call "camping" I call covering as I usually have a shock trooper on the ground trying to hack a point or help out some friendlies. It doesn't matter whether I am moving or stationary a suicide dropship can instant kill me.
You must fly incubi because for what ever reason armor ships don't take as much collision damage. My python can loose all of its tank because I tapped a wall. If you don't believe me come fly with me and I'll show you how even landing with landing gear from only 2 meters can strip a third of my shields away. |

I'm sure you would have some valid points if you weren't coming off like such a raging d-íck head. From what I can read here you listed a few of the things an assault dropship pilot can do and a lot of stuff any body can do with a milita ship. I don't see how it justifies keeping a broken mechanic that allows for easy instant kills.
I think you mid understood my question, I didn't fight you in my milita suit, I didn't shoot or throw a grenade or strafe or anything that would typically happen in a fire fight, I just ran up to your proto suit and touched you, and you die, instantly. Would you be okay with that?
As much as I would love to keep calling in assault dropships to fight these suicide dropships they cost 700k isk a pop and I just don't have the money to do that. You see my money is earned transporting troops, destroying installations, suppressing infantry, and destroying vehicles. I can't do any of that because a guy got in a mlt dropship and won't stop trying to hit me, so I don't get paid, and I probably loose another two games worth of isk.
Thank you for being so considerate and trying to look at the issue from both sides rather than just shouting and carrying on and pointing fingers and calling names. That's what leads to constructive ideas and serious issues being worked out.... |

The difference between me and your soft nature is that if you beat me, I will continuously come back for you and beat you. Instead of coming to the forums crying that they should nerf MLT fits because you bested me in a 1 on 1. Again, push the bar from your chest.
Please, don't feign victim now. I'm blunt but I'm not a dickhead.
I've said in so many ways, if people have to put up with you and your ADS ripping people apart as they try to hack objectives, then you shouldn't be mad or want to change something because mercs decide the only way to get rid of the problem is to suicide dropship you. Just as much as people celebrated bomb trucks and used that to creatively take out tanks, then you should be able to deal with suicide dropships. You should be on comms, talking to your squadmates about helping you avoid the situation.
There are ways around it besides hampering somebody's playstyle option while yours continue untouched.

Yes its a cheap tactic. Yes its been used in real life (Pearl Harbor). Yes its a viable tactic.

It's not a broken mechanic, as anybody with an Afterburner and/or situational awareness can evade the Kamikaze Dropship. The 3rd Person view allows you to see them before they hit you, so there really isn't an excuse as to why your being killed by them.

I'd be perfectly fine with that, as it would only happen due to gross incompetence on my part. If I allow someone to get withing 0m of me, then I deserve to die. Especially if I saw them coming in the first place (which is true in terms Dropships, as your flying in a 3rd Person view)

Personally I have always hated this tactic. However lets look at it a little logically for a second.
- Dropship to dropship combat is pathetic and laughable. Small turrets fired from a dropship rarely do enough damage to kill another dropship. THIS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!
- While I do think that collision damage should always be a way to do 'SOME' damage to an opponent, being able to ram a tanked expensive ADS with a cheap as chips militia dropship is unfair and totally wrong.
Solution.
1 - Increase small turret damage VS air vehicles (All dropships)
2 - Decrease air ship collision damage drastically. |

If I read the OP right he is not suggesting ramming be removed from the game, only that it should have some balance and counters just like every other aspect of this game. If this is not his argument, it should be.
Collision damage on dropships isn't in line with anything else. You can drop an LAV off a rooftop and drive away but a hard landing on a dropship destroys it, and this mechanic is being exploited by rammers. So it is a great strategy, but that does not mean that it is currently fair or balanced. When the cost/benefit or risk/reward is out of whack it needs fixing. It isn't a matter of whining or needing to HTFU.
Because, that's why.

One round from a blaster tank can set off an RE chain and destroy an incoming jihad jeep. It easily takes 6 to 8 XT missiles to kill a militia ds and if you miss a shoot you have to reload after 8 volleys.
I would also like to point out that tanks can smash into each other at full speed literaly monster trucking over each other and take hardly any damage. they can also drive off 100m tall sky scrapers and survive. When a ***** tanker throws on his overdrive to run away and smashes into a wall at full speed he takes no damage.
Yet an rdv drops my ads 5m too high and it explodes. If I touch an mcc or an rdv that appears directly infront of me my ads explodes. If an enemy or friendly dropship touches my ads it explodes. If I hit a building, lightpost, crane, antenna, null cannon missile, mcc missile or the ground at even the slightest speed my ads explodes.
Forge guns, swarms and rail tanks smash an ads around crashing us into buildings and affecting our aim. Not true for tanks. In fact a single forge gun or several swarms does nothing to repping maddies they just keep mowing down infantry and their aim isn't affected.
If tanks took collison damage the way ads do and if av knocked tankers aim around like it does to an ads tankers would literally pull their vagina muscles from all the kicking and screaming they would be doing.

Its all about context though. If im just doing ground work and I get attacked, ill use a forge gun to attack the ADS.
However, if Im in the process of putting uplinks on roofs and you are in the process of attacking me or destroying the uplinks, you can bet that I am going to use my milita dropship to ram you. I got no choice. As just a solo pilot its unarmed. And if I dont attack you, youll just shoot me down anyways.
Its extremely rare that ill call in a dropship just ram an ADS. And 90% of the people i end up ramming are other militia dropships.
My advice to you and other ADS pilots is dont let me see your roof. All i have to do is get above you and press descend, tap the roof and thats the end of that. Its much harder to ram an opponent who is higher than me. Most of the time when i do a roof tap I dont lose my militia dropship either. |

If swarms were effective then this tactic would most likely go away. Most players don't run heavy so they can't rely on forge guns and the PLC is useless against dropships unless they are right in your face, so until swarms are fixed I see no problem with this. It's one of the only effective defenses against DS and ADS that is available to all dropsuit classes.
Once swarms are fixed, if it continues to be a problem I see no reason not to look into some options. In the meantime throw on a scanner and don't hold still.

Any threat on the field is a threat on the field. Let's not be coy about the situation. An ADS can disrupt alot that's happening on ground.
But the subject of the matter is not about the lethality of the ADS. It's about an OP who doesn't like being suicide rammed by another DS, which is viable tactical approach to an attacking ADS.
That's the point of this thread. The collision part is just used so that he wouldn't seem like he's whining or to get his point slickly across. That he wants to eliminate the suicidal dropship.
The title alone states that. Let's not sidestep that issue at hand.
The tactic should be accepted. I have laughed in the past when someone suicide my tank. Kamikaze is a part of war and I can appreciate the enemy doing what he can to eliminate the threat.
So basically, he should up his awareness. If its happening to him, then he should take it as a compliment to his piloting skills, laugh it off, get back in the game and be more careful next time.
It's simple. How is that so hard to do? Lick your wounds and get back in the fight. Stop looking to CCP to help you continue your onslaught unaffected. This happens all too often with players. They can get kills all day using a certain means to get that but once the tables turn, boom...its time to open a thread and request game changes. That's just plain terrible.

I said this before but will say it again. The problem is not suicide ds, it's ds Collison damage in general.
Tanks can smash into each other at full speed and take no damage and fly off towers and survive. They can monster truck over each other to escape danger.
If tanks took collision damage the way ADS do you would explode if you hit a wall, you would explode if you hit another tank red or friendly, you would explode if you jumped and hit the ground too hard. Rail turrets, forge guns and swarms would smash your tank, pushing it 10 meters across the road into a pilar causing you to explode. Every time av hit you your turret would spin and wobble off target.
If tanks took Collison damage like ads do, tanks wouldn't bother shooting each other, they would just crash into each other for instant kill like how it is with dropships. And if that was the case tankers would not think it was a valid tactic. They would realize it's ****** game design and it sucks azz.
Gun control is not about guns...it's about control.
The only way to ensure freedom is by having the means to defend it.

I have never seen somebody miss the point so completely. Using your "real life" example Kamikaze pilots laden with bombs nosed dived into ships at over 300mph. Aircraft carriers didn't explode because a piece of a Zero grazed it at 5mph. Wihc is reason why suicide dropships is more of a game exploit than a tactic. We all know collision damage is broken for dropships, and we all know dogfighting is damn near impossible in dropships. We all know the only defense against kamikazee dropships is to fly in circles until the MLT guy gets bored, which does't work too well if they're flyinga viper with an afterburner anyway.
I get your point, all vehicles should explode upon touching all other vehicles regardless of speed, or class or HP and have no ability to shoot each other just drive round and around in cricles around the map until one touches the other. Then boom. That is fun for you, i guess.
Whats more annoying is that idiots of a similar mentality to yours can't even tell the difference between a ADS and a standard dropship. I've experienced on more than one occasion kamikazee ships avoid the ADS in the air and hit me instead. If you're too stupid to know what you are ramming besides "hurr durr it flies" then of course you wont be able to understand that manipulating broken collision damage is an exploit, not a tactic.

Kamikaze DS piloting isn't that easy (unless target is perfectly still).
Also, performing the kamikaze hit takes some preparation: spawning in safe area, calling vehicle, travel time. Takes time which is a battle asset.
Also the vehicle asset, cheap or not, is consumed in the process. So there's no 'rinse & repeat' as with normal weapons.

you are silly if you actually thought you could get a balanced discussion going about this issue, 90% of players hate the ADS with a passion and would be fine with the idea of a laser pointer destroying them and then you've got pole smokers like atiim and michael arck who will spew verbal nonsense till they are blue in the face 12 hours a day everyday of the week, its where they get their sense of self worth from, arguing with ppl on the internet.
its been like this for a long time and i doubt it will change before they pull the plug on the servers.

Anyone who is against the OP obviously uses suicide dropships. As an ADS pilot the ridiculous impact damage it is one of the most infuriating things in this game. A gentle touch with another vehicle should not instantly take me from 100% to 0HP. In a high speed collision its fair enough but when you die from the most gentle stroke its just bullshit. |

Also, performing the kamikaze hit takes some preparation: spawning in safe area, calling vehicle, travel time. Takes time which is a battle asset.
Also the vehicle asset, cheap or not, is consumed in the process. So there's no 'rinse & repeat' as with normal weapons. the vehicle asset costs about 20k isk, i could spam them all day. |

Michael Arck wrote:Lanius Pulvis wrote: You seem to think dropships are a much greater threat than they are. You think they're easy mode? Try it.
At least suicide LAVs were born of necessity, a tank can destroy your RDV before your vehicle can drop, it can tank repeated FG hits, swarms, PLC and remotes. A suicide LAV can only approach on one plane of attack.
A suicide DS can attack from multiple planes, is typically moving so fast that by the time it pops up on your Tacnet you can't dodge, and oh yeah takes prolonged effort even with proto mis soles to kill, so even if you spot it in time it can just keep coming and kill you anyway.
It's akin to being infantry and all the other guy has to do to kill your proto suit is touch you with his militia one.
Oh, and by the way, vehicle scanners suck.
I pilot DS. I pilot tanks. What does that even have to do with mercenaries finding means to destroy a threat? Please stop putting words in my mouth, I would be fine with suicide dropships if it was legitimate and took some skill like JLAVing. 90% of the time a suicide dropship kills me it taps me, not even going fast. It should take some force to ram a dropship out of the air, not just a love tap. If someone does tap me it should hurt sure, but not cause catastrophic damage! JLAV'S have to noss into the side of a tank, if you don't hit the tank at full speed then your remotes won't detonate and the tank has a chance to kill you by hitting your remotes or destroying your car. That takes at least a little skill. Dropships don't have this luxury, we die instantly. My title was reference to the fact that it use to be maybe one or two suicide dropships every other game. Now its 3-4 every game without fail. That's why I chose the word epidemic.
Again if the collision damage was changed so that they had to be going full speed or after burning to kill my ship in one hit then I'd be okay with kamakazies. I still get shot down by swarm launchers and forge guns and I don't complain about those, in fact I'd like to see swarms buffed a little. Because those have some balance to them, I can fight them and hide from them. I recognize suicide dropshipping as a tactic, but it is horribly, hilariously, unbalanced right now.

Pvt Numnutz wrote:Suicide dropships have become an epidemic.
First off, this complaint is invalid. First off, It is definitely difficult to ram a dropship without being shot down yourself, no ability to counter fire, etc. Second, We get no points. None. The only thing we get is a more even battle field for my team. Not everyone has skilled into vehicles so we have to come up with whatever AV method we can. Ramming a drop ship is perfectly valid. Not to mention I know ADS pilots that ram their own ADS's into other ADS's when the ADS vs ADS battle is dragging out.
Truthfully, I should get some damn points for ramming and destroying a dropship. I drive my corp mates ADS and it's ridiculous how easy it is to maneuver a Incubus over a gorgon. The fact I can ram a gorgon into your ADS is a sign that you need to improve as an ADS. It should be impossible for me to ram you. On top of all of that, am I the only one that occasionally presses the Down button to see the map and see vehicles on the map while in a vehicle myself?

You can't be serious here. No man. This is a joke/troll thread. Agree. Sure it might feel cheap to you but imagine how AV specialist feel about you being in the air and having their AV be of little to no effect in taking you out. lol wait, wait, wait, the OP is talking about being rammed in his tank by a dropship. How can we accept bomb trucks but cannot accept dropship ramming? That's what I don't understand. So kamikaze planes are just wrong? Hey, its a part of war. Factions have kamikaze squads all the time. So I think the guy should deal with it.
Honestly, its the only way sometimes to stop some dude with an ads from going 25/0. There are a lot of things messed up in this game but "fixing" dropship ramming? the OP needs to stop crying and just go back to militia tanks like everyone else.

Whats going on in this thread?
Don't you know that dropships are the easiest thing to do in this game?
They cost nothing, take no skill to use, and they're invincible!!!
My suicide dropship/collision damage exploit...er...tactic in its current state is perfectly justified, and your perspective as an invested ADS pilot is invalid. Besides, I'm tired of calling down a Sica to 2-hit you.
Collision damage is necessary because otherwise it would seem like you were flying armoured future-tech vehicles, and not cardboard boxes.
Better scanning is absolutely unreasonable because once again, you are a cardboard box. RDVs can sneak up an OHK you, why can't I?
Actually I don't really know about this one. So instead...umm...some arbitrary anecdote! What do you have to say about that, huh? That's what I thought
End of story. Oh wait, you're a troll!!!! lol!!!!! Sorry, but that is mandatory here.

the many times i been killed by an ads while hitting it with my assault forge.
the day i discovered the satisfaction of hitting an ads with my... "self guided missile".
it may **** u off. but on the other side it pisses me off just as much to see that ads killing my team with out risk. so guess what. stfu..
tanks deal with jihad jeeps and only those who die by them ***** and complain.
why shouldt ships go through the same thing?. if i see a ship i cant effectively counter would it not make since to take one for the team and kill that expensive dropship lessening the burden. and putting a hole in the enemys pocket at the same time?.
dont bring out what u cant afford to lose. and if u did and did lose it. shut up and go whine some where else.
on another side note. it would be nice to flip dropships if they land on their side or upside down and survive.
also i think this song should play in all mlt vipers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VXacYLcjGA

DID YOU KNOW...
That with a properly fit Gorgon, you can ram an ADS, survive, and ram the next one he calls in as well? Militia Hardener Militia Light Armor Repair Militia Afterburner and militia cpu or pg, I forget which one.
Target sighted, use the afterburner to get in range or above him, pop that hardener and go swordfight.
Different attacks. Touching Tips: Obvious, a head on collision. Lulzy and damaging, you can survive this. Surprise *********: Ram that sexy beast from behind. Slightly difficult. The Donkey Punch: Divebomb from above. MAXIMUM DAMAGE!!! Mushroom Stamp: Is he attempting to throttle down and drop beneath you? OH HELLS NAW! Drop your throttle and slam the nose down. Falcon PAWNCH: T-bone, your nose, his side. Bonus points if your scream 'FALCON PAAAAAAAAAAWNCH!!!!' as you do it.
Never, under any circumstances, let him get above you. Armor is weaker on top.

The only thing I feel would be a good change would be the scan signature, it is a bit silly that you (even with good skills) can't really see a tank or dropship on the scanner. Even when said dropship is just hovering above your head. It's a huge vehicle, they should show up sooner.
But as far as tactic goes... all fine and fun.
