Actually its not a stigma. Techies know that first generation is problematic.
Also, let me remind you that each first generation of a console had its share of problems. Let's not turn this into a flame war. When Playstation One first arrived, it was 300 bucks...and the fan was known to short out. This is when us gamers were known to put our consoles on the carpet floor. Of course this caused fires because the PSX ran so hot. The second generation corrected that problem. |

lol @ their logic... 80 million PS3s in the wild, yet only about 3500 people (give or take a few hundred) play DUST at any given moment. That somehow = a good thing?
Pushing an already struggling game, from technical stand point, on a console that people are clamoring to say goodbye to...
I love my PS3, but man, this 512mb RAM crap gotta go, and it's only so far they can push DUST on this console.
My theory is expect DUST mid-late 2015 using Unreal Engine 4. They can be how "laser focused" they want, PS4 is the future, and only an idiot would think otherwise.

Companies like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft love it! They get to milk their yearly cows over 2 generations of gaming consoles at the same time. Doesn't change the fact that PS3 is old, and will eventually end up like the PS2.

I don't think people have the right idea about why this is being done.
It is not that CCP wants to focus on delivering a "AAA"(Hah! Remember when Dust was going to be AAA!) game on the PS3.
It is not that the want to be loyal to the 80m installed base for the short term.
No, the real answer is that they don't have enough staff to fix the broken PS3 version while developing the PS4 one. So instead of cutting their losses, and throwing all their efforts behind the PS4 version, which, if it was given a couple years of hard work, might turn out to be playable around 2017 or so, they have decided to throw their staff into developing for an outdated platform on its way out.
CCP, full of smarties.
When Dust finally makes it to PS4 sometime either in late 2014, or maybe mid 2015, it will still be a poorly developed, unbalanced piece. There is very little CCP could do about that short of banning everyone who has every played the game and starting over.
I am starting to think that it won't ever matter, because it has lately been becoming more and more clear that CCP is going to cater to scrubs so hard in this game that anyone with actual FPS skill will flee horribly.

Who knows what goes on in SONY's back room, but a decision to keep DUST off the PS4, for now, would be a good one.
But in all likelihood it's not an issue for CCP regardless. Logic and necessity dictate focusing on the core of the game and all concerned parties know that. The current platform is the best possible place to refine the core, imo.
It will force CCP to develop properly in a resource-constrained environment. On the PS4 code would definitely not be receiving the same level of scrutiny. This is a crucial training exercise for CCP if they're going to grow as a development house. The sole downside to this is time lost to the idiosyncratic nature of the cell processor architecture.
But far better all of this now than later. Staying on PS3 until they have their kittenpoop together is a good call, any other decision, given our current circumstances, with very probaly lead to total failure. |

OP hasnt realised that the DUST launch on PS3 was ******* terrible
So why would CCP repeat the same mistake?
They might aswell use PS3 to get everything out like the racial suits/vehicles and weapons and modes
Then do a proper release on PS4 with a fanfare and try to get some advertisement going with a 'half finished game' at least
Worst thing they could do is release it on PS4 in this state |

Wow people in this topic are full of doom and gloom.
CCP has made a commitment to DUST 514. What does that mean? Well if you relate it to EVE, that means going for almost 5 years without releasing a product prior to 2003 and sometime working for no pay and doing other things (the Danger Game) to raise capital in order to just release that game. Since then there have been around 2 dozen expansions, the development of an entire community, support for multiple fanfests, the creation of several tournament based competitions, and so much more... all for free where other MMO's would have charged you for each and every damn expansion.
Now they've provided a "free to play" style game on a console that has made the huge technological leap of being linked to a persistent PC universe not to mention being a unique MMO based on an FPS system as well.
Sure there are bugs. They are doing stuff that has never been done by anyone else before. Sure things are not finished. CCP likes to see how players play and then design to match that paradigm.
So for everyone panicking and saying "...oh noes! no PS4 for DUST..." you are like the little chicken saying that the sky is falling. No they have no plans to release for the PS4... NOW at this moment that they can make any official announcements about. However, as shown in the past, CCP has made a commitment to their other game (EVE Online) for over a decade and have promised to continue to do so for the next decade. I cannot imagine that such a level of commitment does not carry over to DUST 514 as well.
They will, in all likelihood, eventually make the switch over to the PS4 AFTER they have worked through a lot of the rest of the development that is needed on the core gameplay first. Also, it will allow the new platform (the PS4) to mature and work out any of it's bugs as anything first gen for technology is usually not a good product to get. Also "backwards comparability" isn't as simple as saying it and designing to fit a system is always better. I have a feeling that when CCP finally does start progressing towards the PS4 full implementation, that it will occur in steps where PS3 and PS4 support will happen (ie. the game will work for both), then they will phase out the PS3 part, and then they will update the PS4 part to take advantage of full PS4 capabilities. Similar progression to this has taken place in the past for EVE when it came to upgrading graphics or other minimum PC specs.
Finally, CCP has built up a player base on the PS3, so why drop them like a sack of rotten apples just to jump on the "new thing" bandwagon? This would only **** off and alienate a large portion of that player base and that's not how CCP believes in building a community. Yeah, other MMO's dwarf EVE Online for shear numbers of players and similarly other FPS's have a larger player base than DUST does, but CCP works on building a steadfast community of players that doesn't give up and continues to grow slowly over time. By dropping PS3 to jump to PS4 without consideration for that would kill that community and cause them to loose out in the long run.
Also, someone was complaining about not wanting to have to disconnect their PS4 to be able to play their PS3 and vice versa when they get both... I have to ask, if you can afford a PS4 and already have a PS3, then I'm assuming you also have a digital TV (plasma, LCD, or LED style) in which case they come with more than one HDMI inputs... That's one cable for the PS3 and one cable for the PS4. Seriously, how difficult is that? |

I will not be buying a PS4 this year but I probably will in time for the Destiny Beta in the spring. I will probably keep the PS3 around for a bit but my playing time will be dependent upon how much I enjoy the PS4 games.
While the PS4 will not be the death knell for Dust, it will definitely have more of an impact than other PS3 games will. GTA and BF4 are still on the PS3 so its easy for players to switch back and forth. As Dubs has said, its going to much more difficult to get players to boot up different systems (or keep an old system) just for a few games.
People will be slowly migrating to the PS4 but there will be a point where it reaches the point where Dust will truly suffer if it does not migrate. PS3's will not last forever. When they begin to break down people will either chose to fix an outdated platform or just invest in a PS4.
The bigger question is whether CCP will give themselves enough lead time to begin development for the PS4 before players move on.

Considering most of the people making the argument for the PS4 were 12 years old when the PS3 came out, I don't take your argument for the PS4 seriously.
"Youre like a small child that wanders into a theatre, no frame of reference!"
Furthermore, if we look historically at major platform launches they are always plagued with shortages, bugs and increase demand which increases the price. You really should get over the hype of the "new hotness" look at GTA5, crap. BF 4 which really is BF 3.5 and Call of DOOTY. It's all crap fed down our throats by developers that are just trying to get their product out. PS4 is going to be no different.
Don't contribute to mindless consumerism by adding fuel to this argument. The people that enjoy dust the most don't sway off the path of Dust because of new hyped out game. The bottom line is, nothing that will be released on the PS4 will replace Dust 514, at least no time soon. Even if that does happen, by the time it does, Dust will probably have been ported over.
Quit worrying about the future and enjoy the present. If that is to hard for you, then go find something else to do. |

Again, its not so much worrying about the initial release of the PS4, its about the development lead time to actually port it over. Its not something that they can hotfix in a month.
Im sure that many people would feel a lot easier if CCP just said "We are aware of what is needed to port Dust over to the PS4 and have a team ready to begin that project once we deem it necessary for the health of the game. At this current time, we feel that a port at the release of the PS4 would be more detrimental to the community than beneficial. Rest assured, once that changes, we will let you know about the timeline for the port well ahead of time"

That worries me because it touches on the common sense of the people who are building this game. There are 80M PS3's out there because the PS4 has not yet been released. The PS4 is debuting at only $399...that is less than new model cellphones when they hit the market. Why does CCP think that people won't buy the PS4? How many people still play on their PS2's??
The PS3 is going to be a dead system in a matter of months and CCP has a few years plan on it? That worries me because how do they not see that pushing for the PS3 is a fail idea? As much as I enjoy dust.....no way will I be unhooking my PS4 and then hooking up my PS3 for a pc match or to cap each week. I won't be getting the PS4 at launch but it won't be too long after that. I'm not going to be going through that trouble of switching systems just to log onto dust. I already have too much congestion with my pc, ps3, Hauppauge, cell phone charger, internet router, etc. I have to use two extension cords......something will give.
If PS4 sells 10 million in its first year, there are still 70 million more people still playing on PS3. Oh wait, how silly of me, the fact that next gen has launched will cause those 70 million people who didn't get a PS4 in the first year to stop gaming. DUST 514 is doomed!
Relax dude, I think you fail to understand how companies control their info. CCP isn't going to say they are working on PS4 because they're not ready to talk about. Also, if they did choose to reveal it while it was still a ways away, there is a chance that people would stop playing the inferior gen 7 version and wait for gen 8. By not saying anything you dont have this issue. |

If past sales numbers vis-a-vis generation changes in consoles are indicative of future trends, it should be about two years before the PS4 has enough units in homes to have greater game sales than the PS3. Moreover, some of the very best games for any indiviudal console often come towards the end of said consoles life cycle. Assuming that CCP has a transition plan that places DUST 514 on the PS4 by early 2015, the game should be well positioned to maintain a reasonable sized player base.

The ps3 will be likely just as relevant as the ps4 throughout the whole ps4's life cycle. This isnt a ps2 to ps3 technilogical gap. Ps4 is simply slightly upgraded glorified ps3. Games wont be running 60fps locked and graphics will be similar. Look at killzone 3 then killzone 4, even killzone 2. As far as dust goes, it wouldnt change at all on the ps4. Its not made for the ps4. It would be "ported" = same game different platform. Same engine, same devs, same developement process, same playerbase.
