Wow people in this topic are full of doom and gloom.
CCP has made a commitment to DUST 514. What does that mean? Well if you relate it to EVE, that means going for almost 5 years without releasing a product prior to 2003 and sometime working for no pay and doing other things (the Danger Game) to raise capital in order to just release that game. Since then there have been around 2 dozen expansions, the development of an entire community, support for multiple fanfests, the creation of several tournament based competitions, and so much more... all for free where other MMO's would have charged you for each and every damn expansion.
Now they've provided a "free to play" style game on a console that has made the huge technological leap of being linked to a persistent PC universe not to mention being a unique MMO based on an FPS system as well.
Sure there are bugs. They are doing stuff that has never been done by anyone else before. Sure things are not finished. CCP likes to see how players play and then design to match that paradigm.
So for everyone panicking and saying "...oh noes! no PS4 for DUST..." you are like the little chicken saying that the sky is falling. No they have no plans to release for the PS4... NOW at this moment that they can make any official announcements about. However, as shown in the past, CCP has made a commitment to their other game (EVE Online) for over a decade and have promised to continue to do so for the next decade. I cannot imagine that such a level of commitment does not carry over to DUST 514 as well.
They will, in all likelihood, eventually make the switch over to the PS4 AFTER they have worked through a lot of the rest of the development that is needed on the core gameplay first. Also, it will allow the new platform (the PS4) to mature and work out any of it's bugs as anything first gen for technology is usually not a good product to get. Also "backwards comparability" isn't as simple as saying it and designing to fit a system is always better. I have a feeling that when CCP finally does start progressing towards the PS4 full implementation, that it will occur in steps where PS3 and PS4 support will happen (ie. the game will work for both), then they will phase out the PS3 part, and then they will update the PS4 part to take advantage of full PS4 capabilities. Similar progression to this has taken place in the past for EVE when it came to upgrading graphics or other minimum PC specs.
Finally, CCP has built up a player base on the PS3, so why drop them like a sack of rotten apples just to jump on the "new thing" bandwagon? This would only **** off and alienate a large portion of that player base and that's not how CCP believes in building a community. Yeah, other MMO's dwarf EVE Online for shear numbers of players and similarly other FPS's have a larger player base than DUST does, but CCP works on building a steadfast community of players that doesn't give up and continues to grow slowly over time. By dropping PS3 to jump to PS4 without consideration for that would kill that community and cause them to loose out in the long run.
Also, someone was complaining about not wanting to have to disconnect their PS4 to be able to play their PS3 and vice versa when they get both... I have to ask, if you can afford a PS4 and already have a PS3, then I'm assuming you also have a digital TV (plasma, LCD, or LED style) in which case they come with more than one HDMI inputs... That's one cable for the PS3 and one cable for the PS4. Seriously, how difficult is that? |
