I fear that Dust will have to relaunch, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. AFK(ers) is now gone, leaving nothing but SP grind, and the amount of SP you gain per match is just not enough. The link between Eve and Dust is non-existent, Eve players couldn't give a damn about Dusties, and many Dust players don't even know about Eve. Customization is locked behind pre-req, which is locked behind a pre-req, which is locked behind another pre-req, while organized proto-squads continue to dominate blues. This game definitely should not have came out of Beta. |

The modulation of the frequency remains the same yes but there is also a visible decline sugessting that the stable modulation comes from a central group of core gamers and the decline is the mass of the exiting player base . Which is a sad thug as I love thus game. |

Doesn't look any better.
And if you take a look at eve-offline.net you'll notice that player count spikes at the weeken. About 4000 - 5000 players online then. After that it goes down to a low of about 2500 until it spikes again. I don't know why this could be. Maybe because people have work or school during the week. But that's just a wild guess. |

I, too, am pretty disheartened by the trend-lines I see on eve-offline at the moment...particularly because I think the game improved considerably with the 1.4 release. The one point of solace I've found is that, if I squint the right way at the lifetime Tranquility graph, it appears that CCP tends to lose players over the course of each year, but rapidly pick them back up even more at the beginning of the next. Of course, that's probably because of Eve's large-patch cycle, but I'm going to hold onto hope for now...

Numbers don't matter as much as revenue. If each of those players is paying $1 a day then they're bringing in roughly $38,000 a week. That can support a team of 20 developers + infrastructure.
5000 players each buying a Merc pack to keep their passive boosters rolling brings in $75,000 a month.
They have funding, not to mention that they probably still have a decent development budget independent of the revenue their bringing in.

Enjoy your 16 player lobbied/instanced 'MMO' (though hackers have claimed to have bumped the number to 32; and yes the game is already hacked seems to be no hot coffee this time around) MGO was a VASTLY better game than dust, the ONLY reason it died was from incompetent moderators (CCP is worse) and rampant glitching (i'm talking DDoS attacks to prevent official tourney matches from happening). The game itself was amazing, had 10K+ players it's first year, and was set for a 10 year plan until hackers and glitchers literally ruined the game.
Even after all that, it lasted exactly 4 years.
The learning curve in MGO was in the gameplay, not the skills and menus system like in DUST
CCP could learn a thing or two from what happened to MGO, but it seems like dust is on the same course, doomed to fail, in less than 4 years.
There is nothing wrong with 16v16 lobby gameplay if it's fun, engaging, smooth, exciting, etc., all things dust are not. |

Hey he started that argument. From what I understand about the online aspect about GTA Online is that it is only as persistent as diablo 3 is, which is contained to character. In other words if you delete your character, your presence in that world goes with you all your accomplishments, establishments and the sorts gone nothing survives you or becomes a permanent or temporary scar anywhere. This is probably why Diablo and Borderlands have been regarded as meta-mmos instead of full fledge sorts. The rest is mostly Go to place A or B, do traditional style mmo missions such as cap 5 fools playin around your corner, and team death match. Oh and level up.
Oh and Golf (which btw was stupid amounts of fun in Halo Reach/4) |

I pre-ordered a PS4 the day after it was detailed at E3 ... so, yeah, I'm going to be one of those people moving along to the next generation. I plan to keep my PS3, though, as a "secondary" gaming device, as there are some RPGs (Bioware's stable of titles and Bethesada's Skyrim) that I will continue to play on occasion.
Dust 514? *shrug* It's a giant "if" at this moment, largely hinging on how BF4 and Planetside 2 handle themselves in the weeks and months after PS4 goes to the consumers.

Those people are only counted for the time they're logged in though so they don't tick up or tick down that much and since server API like only reports every ... 15 minutes? They're contribution is in and out and not seen on the graph influence as much.

No need to be alarmist.
A few months ago it was 5,000 at 5:00 EST, a time when many people are getting home from work and many school kids have been home for a while.
Right now it is at 3,123 players on DUST.
I don't want to preach doom and gloom. That is why I disagree with people saying "GTA V will kill DUST".
However as I predicted a steady downward trend is taking place where we are gradually losing people to boredom and frusturation...
When will it be okay to have 2,000 players? 1,000? In a F2P MMO on the PS3? At this point MAG is almost rivaling DUST, and that game is nearly dead!
EDIT: According to EVE-Offlines charts, on 5-25-13 DUST topped out at 6,551 players. Over the past six months there has been a very real downward path to our current 3,300... and it doesn't show any signs of going upwards... |

Derp LAV's are killing me ..... SOoooooooo lets me complain so they take the free ones out... when it was mostly LLAV..derp So if you want a isk free one you have to pay real money .... YAY they listened to us ..... but we all lost ... FUdge the new players right guys?
Saw guys arguing about recalling vehicles the other day , so they fought until it was suggested that the infantry shouldnt be able to use supply depot if tanks couldnt be recalled..... So with either side not back down til we would all lose a good option to the game ....over stupidness.
As many mistakes as CPP made with this game ... YOU forum warriors are killing it too .
I bet they love how ya'll fight and argue all day ...with each other .
Boy imagine ...just stop and think what would happen if we maybe were civil with each other and tried to work together , we all love the game right?
Imagine what we could get done if maybe ..... we were holding their feet to the fire instead of spending all our spare time trying to get each other nerf'd

I'm sorry but for every bad suggestion they take, they ignore the good ones. At the end of the day it's CCP that makes the decisions. Don't blame the community for the mistakes of CCP.
Uprising is a prime example of how CCP completely ignored ALL the good feedback from the beta. |

I've seen so many posts that go something like this I'm leaving Dust until they fix... Dust needs some major event or addition which will bring the hundreds who left until vehicles or aim assist or whatever was fixed something like PvE or a one day event where all players have unlimited ISK for the first 4 games. Even if it was just for a day however long term would be better just getting people to play again should be at the top of list, they should be working on PvE or another event as we speak or type rather. |

How are my decisions supposed to matter in a ******* demo that changes every month? When it was officially in beta it changed more like every 4-5 months. We wanted a 'finished game' at release. It NEEDED to be a finished game at release. Now it needs to be finished before all the bigger shinier toys completely overshadow it and this game is forgotten about.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game and want it to succeed more than any other game but even the most loyal of players only has so much patience and when decisions are taken that effectively stall gameplay expansion (PVE on hold; Dust/Eve link plans reduced), that really makes people lose hope.
Rather than just look at the numbers and get all doom and gloom though, we have to think about what CCP can do to regain and grow its playerbase. Fixing all the broken things might get some leavers back. Adding more gear and maps will keep the current players' attentions. The way I see it though, the only way CCP can gain new players ever is to expand on the game and show something tangible that lets us see the 'grand vision' coming through.
*the grand vision being a massive, open world, expanding beyond the realms of just a lobby shooter (which it is atm, even in PC). This should be Eve in FPS form. Fittings and character wise, it's not extremely far off - in terms of gameplay depth/variety it is lightyears away. |

I want to fly my ******* dropships and thinking about it has actually been really upsetting lately. I'm sorry that I took the crash course on CCP incompetence after a year of faithful testing and playing (mostly playing, but definitely testing) and thinking, oh geez, maybe just maybe the reason flying dropships was so difficult was just because I had never really maxed out the skills. Maybe just maybe if I max things out, it will actually make a difference.
How ******* wrong was I? How ******* heart broken was I when I took my maxed out dropship into PC matches only to be absolutely destroyed in mere seconds, no matter the tactics I employed. How ******* upset do you think I was when I played game after game, hour after hour, day after day, trying to work out my tactics. Swapping fits, changing my approach (I was intentionally deploying after every death in an effort to use my ISK buffer from Beta loot to try and fund my flight training again), even skilling into what I didn't want to skill into, Assault dropships, in a desperate attempt to have a ******* useful logistics ship.
All I want to do is be a kick ass dropship pilot that supports his team and amplifies the effectiveness of friendly armor LIKE IN ALL THE ******* VIDEOS!!!

FOR A LOT MORE TIME BROSKI!
With some kind of Respec you would have a LOT of OLD players coming back to test things they've always wanted to test. ATM there IS NO FOTM. So everybody with some Dust time will want to return to play with new weapons, try new loadouts, maybe be a tanker or a dropship pilot...
New players will be able to create their little Low level FOTM, like say,Heavies With Geks. After they feel they have enough SP to try a better loadout they just respec and play say, with amarr dropsuit and ASCR! OR Logis, Or whatever....
PLUS, with the current update speed CCP is giving us EVEN IF YOU DONT LIKE THE CURRENT STATE of the game, everytime an update comes you will want to try it to see if the game feels better for you. Not to mention every time we have new equipment/weapons/vehicles/dropsuits....

Yes and no.
October 1st GTA V Online so expect less Dust 514 players. October 4th BF4 so expect less dusties and I will also be playing that BF4 Beta so I will be not playing Dust those days.
And once I have my PS4 well unless theres a Dust 514 client that means no more dusting for me.

I don't see where people are getting the 9k number, we never had that high during the beta of dust only players. Also API errors are fairly common. Like last month the website was plagued with weird down spikes that did nothing to disrupt the overall waveform whereas oh say a server offline error causes a significant decline in the waveform. Either way 66% loss rate is far better than the 90% loss rate of planetside 2.
As for the effects of GTA Online content consumption rate puts its lifespan at 2 months after launch with no updates, thats the hardcore bunch, casuals typically take anywhere from 2x to 4x longer. Also since nothing in GTA Online is pressing or 'really plays on' without the character logged in its possible if the players know of the fact that then they may not dedicate as much time to the game as a traditional mmo would normally demand.
The other weird thing is that other people have to be loaded into your GTA online instance. Or if they get loaded into your instance it could turn ugly if eve online is any good indicator of social interaction as one puts it 'we're just looking for gud fights but not find'n any,' may just kill the game due to apprehension if losing becomes a big deal.
Games like BF4 has about 4-6 months content because the tedious amount of grinding required (at least its a fun grind) and overall there is no perception of end game in BF so players will play on. Similar to how CoD prestige mode somewhat works it eliminates the end game syndrome by simply reintroducing beginning game content back over again. This is why these games can remain highly popular until the next sequel. Halo 4 recently jumped on the bandwagon while you don't get any special gear or weapons or the sorts you do get pretty looking armor and the sorts. |

As a guy who's gotten a few hundred hours of enjoyment and a few dozen hours of aggravation, all for the staggering initial investment of $0.00, I'm alright with this game. They will stay on the cutting edge of technology. They will stay Icelandicly indifferent to your bitching and moaning. In the end, they will lose players who have no patients (95%), and they will hold on to the 5% forever. That number will grow. CCP is the most frustrating group of people you will never speak to in the world, but they will always give you the best product they can, and they will not stop improving it... ever. You do realize that when school starts, everyone keeps a normal schedule in which they fill their free time with activities...
First, they said it was summer, so people were on vacation... Second, they say school started so now people don't have the time (graduate student in Mathematics here, and I still have free time to play games [just might not be this one]).
Please fanboys, keep telling yourself that they will come back, instead of actually admitting that they are not coming back, unless it's months from now; Just remember that MANY games for the next gen are coming out, and with 4000k as the max I've seen in the last couple months, I don't see this game getting "back on track". |

Since classes started up again I've had a lot less time for gaming, and since I just bought Diablo 3 I'm playing that with the little free time I have at the moment. It's not like I've left Dust or anything, just taking a break to play another new game. I'm sure plenty of people are doing the same thing for GTA V.
Dust will be fine, it just needs to keep getting better. And when it gets to be really good then they need to get some advertising out there to get some new players. |

This is based on industry standards and then the numeration Rockstar has given out so far. It's pretty damn stupid to oh say make a 20 hour mission right? Though knowing rockstar they hate the idea of a dumb mission that takes only 1 minute to complete. There is a sweet spot time known and throw that against a hard core gamer average time span you get 2 months of content without updates. Rockstar promises to do updates however. |

No need to be alarmist. i believe the 'alarmist' phase was a couple months ago when it went from 8k down to under 5k in 3 or 4 days... 2600, sure its sad, but not a ton worse than normal peak #s of 3500...
Bear in mind that 3500 - 4000 was about what we had on average during the Beta.
I'd imagine April/May had as many players as it did because of the Caldari Prime live event and the fact that release day had scores of reviews and media outlets checking the game out.
