Perhaps an "overkill" health bar as well? If you just barly kill the DS/ADs then it crashes as normal, but if enough damage is done it explodes in the air like a vehicle does on the ground when killed and takes the pilot and crew with it.

Personally I thought they should have left the splash radius alone and just reduced the splash damage more than they did. That would make it a good finisher, but something that requires skill if used as a primary.
