Such a strange choice...
Haha, well... it's true, we did record that onsite at the circus
Going through each of these sounds in the list:
- Vehicle active scanner: Totally agree, that sound is terrible. A lot of the vehicle modules I'm supremely unhappy with
- Sniper Rifle Charge: Agree, needs some work
- Headshot sound: Totally Agree, it was a bad idea (you can find other threads like this). I don't think we'll go back to the cello hits, since it doesn't match the music, but we'll change this
- LAR: Sorry, don't agree :) Fits the lore of the weapon. It's a love it or hate it sound, we went through more than 15 different "finalized" sounds before this one. If you were in the open beta you may remember it changing every release. I like this one, it's the bread and butter of the weapons
- Jameson Irish Whiskey: I'm more of single malt guy myself, but I never turn down a drink
- Regenerating Shields: Halfway agree, it's not perfect but its close. I wish I could actually use the tardis sound....
- Shotguns: Also disagree, I mean - it does sound a bit like a basketball, but that's the air compressing inside the weapon. The only reason I hate this sound is too often someone comes up behind me and kills me with one shot...
The bad news: We're taking the sound a little slower right now, since I'm helping out with control issues, voice chat issues and some UI stuff. Basically I'm sacrificing big advances on the sound to help some areas in the game that directly impact gameplay. The other sound guys are working on environments and other stuff that may not be available until the future. Some of these poor sounds will not see an improvement right away. Headshot and vehicle modules are the first on the list, and that won't be in until 1.5.
We are watching the forums a lot for what sounds just annoy people, even if we don't respond to everything. The thing is that what sounds cool the first time may not sound great after 100 times so the input here helps a lot. |

Interesting feedback.
I do say I don't like the headshot sound, its the only 'annoying' sound to me personally. but some people like it.
The shield regeneration noises are fine to me, I like that they are pronounced and lets me know the progress of my shields, the noise for when the shields are fully regenerated and completely depleted are really helpful for me in terms of in combat situational awareness when I can't stare at my health bars. I like that they are distinctive and you know exactly what those sounds are.
The shotgun? I dunno I like, its a unique sound and when you hear it you know exactly what it is and immediately start looking around to make sure its not near you.

Hey cool, Earworm's checking this thread. I have a few things I'd like to bring up.
-Any chance of adding footsteps? It'd change gameplay a lot if we heard people around us. That may be more advantage than intended so I wouldn't be surprised if they're intentionally left out.
-I hear random bullet chirps OFTEN when I'm 99% sure no one's firing at me. When I'm frustrated with disbelief I hold still just to see if someone will to take my head. I almost always walk away alive. I hear phantom sounds other places too. Yet, when I AM getting hit at, as of Uprising, I often hear nothing. With each impact. This is especially bad when you can't see a sniper render when looking at it these days. The bullet contrail doesn't appear either. I hope all that gets fixed someday, but just consistent sniper round sounds would make the anti sniper game much less bad. This is probably related, but I also don't hear forges hitting my vehicle a few feet from me, sometimes. My guess is it's all related to the client PS3 not crediting the attacker somehow at a certain range, not with graphics or sounds. But they do get to hit you. Nothing fun about that. Also, getting hit by a charge sniper and surviving should have alarming feedback instead of a very soft bullet chirp. It doesn't have to be loud, but it should be striking, because it is.
-IMO LAVs are too loud by far. Modern small vehicles at their noisiest are only almost this bad. I think it would be in a future weapon designer's best interest to not remove the muffler.
-I think the scrambler rifle sounds silly. It's reminds me of a gentle toy version of the death ray noise from the old War of the Worlds movie. Getting nailed by the full charge should be a audio shock IMO.
-But the headshot sound is the biggest shock. It deserves repeating. It's borderline ear damaging in my headset, and my other sounds are soft. Not cool. That and the CCP logo splash. I have my audio settings in game at extremely low, and that logo is 10x loud as everything else so it probably isn't responding to volume settings.
-Turret installation users hear practically nothing when their character is hit. Maybe that's an intended balance. I can't see why my clone can't give me a special indication that he's catching mortal wounds aside from a number in the corner dropping.

I hear footsteps but they are fairly quiet. If you are in a quiet area of the field you can hear someone walking up to you while you are hacking or sniping, especially in crunchy dirt. Less so in structures unless you get the load clanking steel deck plates.

Headshot sound is a fine "sound" but it just needs to be made lower in volume to bring it more in line with other sounds of the game.

Such a strange choice...
Hahahahahah now I'm gonna have to skill into the vehicle active scanner just to know what a Japanese clown car sounds like!! What is it with people being funnier today on this forum? Did ccp put x2 multiplier on the humour skill on the forum? I swear i've leaked eye-water at least three times today at people's posts!! Keep up the good work, dust should be more fun and less stress and this helped! |
