Using total SP would make for a much better temporary fix until a more elegant solution can be put into place but would serve to divide what already isn't a very large player base much further than it should.
You can gain SP passively, not even involved in the game, granted this means one is capable of using better gear but doesn't necessarily mean they have the experience. WP is gain actually playing the game.
WP is actually playing the game, but some people play the game even after their bonus SP pool has been exhausted and continue to accumulate WP creating a gear gap down the road once again.
I really feel like the queuing should emphasize keeping the gear levels the same since there is no real way to gauge player experience.
For instance, my WP is actually quite low, but I have been playing this game for over a year. Putting me in a match with only players of similar WP with no restrictions on gear isn't very fair either - Even though I generally run the cheapest fits I can muster in a public match not everyone has such complete disregard for their KDR. |

If/when Matchmaking comes into the game it maybe should have it's own Tab in the Battle Finder.
If you want to play in a game where matchmaking does not take place then you should not be forced into a game where matchmaking does take place.
Alternatively, a box in the settings could be clicked saying that you do not want to enter New Eden and would rather play in the "New Eden Simulator".

I'd even settle for tiered gear restrictions with proportionate isk rewards at this point. It'd be a lazy way to fix the problem, but with so many ways to measure a player it'd be difficult to find a balance I would think and any solution is better than none. |

its not a match making system its like EvE's security system, you can choose where you want to fight and get rewarded for playing against harder enemies |

Syrius Nightshade wrote:Hi everyone.
My purpose here is not to complain, I just think this game has a lot of potential but it's currently just too unbalanced and frustrating and I believe this CAN be solved if the developers do something about it, so I'm here to share my experience.
Before you say "Hey, you're just a newbie, you gotta get some experience and better equipment", let me explain the whole thing.
Yes, I'm a fresh DUST player. But I'm an "aged", "hardcore" (if you want to call me that way...), I'm very experienced with almost any kind of game and expecially TPS and FPS. I have "trained" reflexes but most important I play clever.
So let's try DUST 514, I'm curious! I start as an assaulter. I fall in love with the tactical GLU rifle and I quickly get to 150 kills and a KDR of 3.50 in a few games, doing very good scores like 13-2, 16-0, etc. After that, SOMETHING CHANGES. Now matchmaking lets me choose what mode to play... "cool" I think, "I love Skirmish, now I can play it the whole time instead of boring Deathm... I mean, Ambush" BUT here's what happened:
For the entire match I've been killed over and over and over by Heavy machine/Proto wide-range cannon guys with BILLIONS Shield/Health points, One shot-kill shotgun dudes camping the objectives hiding in a dark corner with super scanners, Duvolle rifles of any kind and some weapons I don't even know what they are such sort of grenade-launcher or whatever. Ok, just a bad game..? No. From now on, this seems to be the new DUST 514.
What happened? Why does everything change as soon as I get into the game? Is this game's Matchmaking KDR based? Because, unlike different games where EVERYONE got the SAME HP, this WON'T work. It should be SP or WP based. I just CAN'T stand a chance against so much overpowered enemies, even detecting them and getting them unaware, from behind, in the open space while I'm in cover, with a GLU tactical rifle. I start shooting, they turn back, they see me... I'm dead. In a split second.
Upset, I try to build a second character and this time I spend some of my SP to get a consistent shield defense. I can still afford a GEK 38 which is good. This time I manage to hit a KDR of 4.20, doing awesome stuff and feeling like a 1 man army, winning almost every game. Until that happens again: Matchmaking now allows me to choose a game mode. This time I'm ready to anything, I know this is going to be bad.
Well, it's really bad. I get overwhelmed. I have a marshmellow-loaded gun and paper armor. The very best I can do is 4 kills/4 death.
I loved this game so much for the first 24 hours. I kinda hate it now... I can't do anything. It's very frustrating because this game got something MORE than all the other classic FPS games, something shiny and lovely, and it's such a shame it's so vastly unbalanced. I'm not saying "go to hell, I'm back to Battlefield and Uncharted 3", because this game CAN be awesome, but it really needs a fix.
I'm leaving it for now, but with the hope that Matchmaking will be sensibly improved. If that happens, I'll be back to play an amazing game. If that doesn't happen it would be really sad.
I wish you the best game experience.
Thanks for reading, see ya.
Sorry buddy. They talk about matchmaking since the first build 1 year ago. Shame they always have a new excuse. Long time ago it was "we need more people to make work the matchmaking", then was something like "it's still a beta", then was "it's still a beta", and then was "it's still a beta". but but the official launch, "it's still a beta". They have more important things to do before "implement the matchmaking" that the game already has but you can't see because it's like the air. You can't see it, but it's there.
They need to implement more badass suits colors like the red one. Then, they need to implement more lagged game modes, then they need to buff the assault rifle that it's broken because they touch it all the time, and then they will "talk" about implement some kind of new overpower matchmaking.
Try to think that is not easy at all to make this kind of development so if you're not an elf, or Gandalf, you won't see much of all this.
But don't worry because...
Welcome to New Eden.

mmmm you gonna come up against vet players in every game you play. the problem is 6 man squads vs random berries in every single server.
some times the squads of spawnkillers come up against better squads and get the just desets. aint no better feeling when chasing a bunch of berrie killers around the map

My MM suggestion is not based on SP level but on rewards. Say 2-3 tiers max with the rewards as follows
Tier 1 - Isk rewards between 35K to 60k, salvage STD to ADV Tier 2 - Isk 100k to 150k, salvage ADV to generic Proto Tier 3 - Isk 125k +, salvage ADV to Racial Proto.
Officer Salvage remains random across all tiers. This way people are not restricted to a particular tier but it is not cost effective to run proto in tier 1 battles but if you do and get run over by a LAV then tough luck it will take you 4+ tier 1 games to recover the lost Isk. However, if vets do decide to join tier 1 fights then they will probably run militia, BPO, or STD fits with maybe an ADV weapon which would still give new players some chance against them. However, tier 1 fights would not be Isk efficient for vets and they would likely not risk high Isk value items.
This system would encourage better players to move on from pub stomping new players.
So what you have is basically a STD, ADV and Proto version of the existing game modes with corresponding rewards. This would hopefully be easier to introduce then basing this off of say a combination of SP, WP and K/D.
If 3 tiers are too much then this would also work with 2 I.e. Tier 1 as described above and Tier 2 would be the rewards we are currently getting. |

i think to be fair to new players, they should get triple experience, and 2 points passive sp, until they reach 1 million SP with no skill cap. then, everything goes back to normal except their is still no skill cap for them until they get 500,000 additional sp. at this point they should get the regular progreession with the skill cap, regular passive sp, etc until they accrue an additional 200,000sp. after leaving the academy, they should be able to respec their points by default 1 more time (before joining a corporation. otherwise corps might be jerks and influence them the wrong way)
with 1.7 million sp + the 500,000 initial sp you get, you can do some pretty decent stuff and get some pretty advanced gear. their are beginning corps to help them, and the game directs them on how to set up things (this is since the beta).
at this point they are no longer a noob and are getting owned because they suck, and put their sp in the wrong spots for the way they want to play.
this game is littered with instructionals, there is no excuse.

Aside from the Acadamy, this game is almost unplayable solo. All builds prior to this, I enjoyed going solo for about half the night, then jumping into a squad once I got warmed up and wanted some social-time with friends. Sometimes I jumped in a squad right away, sometimes I played solo all night. But either way it was mostly fun no matter what I chose to do.
Now fast forward to uprising, and aside from the first few days of the new build, I just cannot play solo anymore. I try, and try some more but I have maybe 10% fun the entire time. The other 90% is miserable frustration. The ONLY way I can enjoy the game is running with a group of players in a squad, but even that depends on who I play with. Sometimes it's a fun group and we all have a blast and have good laughs, other times it's just flat out awful.
I am really having a hard time enjoying this game right now, and since I am forced to squad up with players to have a shot at having fun, I am playing less and less. And each night I login, I am wondering more and more "Why even bother". Solo play is mostly ruined by the fact of never knowing if you are going to end up against the team with 1-3 six man squads and get dominated. I tried playing several hours last night solo, and I don't think I ever got in a match where there was no pre-formed squads on either team.
I understand this game is meant to be team oriented, but come on CCP let us solo every now without it being a miserable experience. Sometimes I just don't feel like socializing and want to play music and enjoy the game on my own terms, what's wrong with that?
Skill gaps aside, I think the biggest problem with new players like the OP, is that they are playing solo for a while before they end up in a corp. And even if I (with plenty of proto gear, equipment, and experience in Dust) can't enjoy solo, then these new players mostly don't stand a chance.
Aside from matchmaking actually matching based on SP/WP or whatever, here is the next best thing that should be easy enough to implement:

It is really a shame proto stomping seems to be the funnest thing to do for the EveTards. You seem to be coming from the Call of Halo school of lack-of-thought. The fact is, this is not Call of Duty. This is not Halo. This is not even Battlefield, though that's the closest in overall gameplay feel. This is very much a tactical, squad-based shooter. If you lone wolf, you will die. If you run-and-gun, you will die. If you neglect your skills in favour of immediately unlocking Gun X, you will die. And if you neglect your loadouts in favour of pure gank and no mind to tank (be it armour, shield, or speed), YOU WILL DIE.
Umm...I agree to a certain extent, but not entirely. If you're a good FPS player and you have 1 mill skill points spent well you can beast.
Also you can use a murder taxi until you get enough sp to run and gun. It's terrible, and I hate it, but it works. |

Weird... yesterday I made a squad with my fresh alt who's still in academy battles. By using FW battles I fought against the normal playerbase. 5/6 of my squad mates were using militia gear or just the basics. We had enough WP that match for 3 orbitals. I reeled in 2000+ WP. Surely your skills aren't that good. Anyway don't go raging because some dudes shot you. Ofcourse you won't survive a one-on-one match against veterans in better gear. Instead be smarter and go flanking, hide behind some boxes, etc...

For now, you can either join a huge corp and never play a game without 5 buddies to back you up at all times (that's called "skill"), you can continue feeding clones to the brave people that run in full proto-squads with flavor-of-the-month weapons, or you can take door #3: start a new alt and play in the Academy. You'll be stuck with basic gear, but so will everyone else, and hardly anyone is in a squad, so it's actually more of a test of individual skill than how good a team you have. IMO it is simply the best way to play Dust at the moment, because it's actually fun.
Hopefully before too long, CCP will realize that the current build serves only one playstyle, and that the only players who are going to stick around are people who are interested in that playstyle. The game will never attract more than a small niche audience without matchmaking.
There are plenty of ways they can achieve this, and I'm not here to say how it should be done, but one thing is plainly obvious: Dust should allow players to play against others of a similar skill level. If a player is going 20/0 regularly, they are playing against people who are vastly below their skill level, and they need to be moved into a bracket with the other guys who are going 20/0, so they are evenly matched. I would think they would like this, because Dust has to be terribly boring to those guys as it is, because it is seldom a challenge. Putting seasoned players against each other, and less seasoned players against each other, is good for everyone except people who have no interest in a challenge, who just want to believe they are awesome because of a number on a screen. If Dust caters primarily to those people, it will die.
There's no reason there can't be game modes (like PC, FW and even free-for-all public matches) that put everyone against everyone else. You can even make that type of game the "elite" game type, the "real" Dust, that everyone aspires to. But without the ability to improve one's skill without dying every five steps, no one is going to stick around long enough to get to the "real" games. This is something everyone should want. |

Hi Nightshade,
I know exactly how you feel. It's grueling getting stomped over and over again for weeks on end, especially if you're a FPS-experienced. Hang in there, though. It gets better pretty quickly. Give the game 30 days, and I doubt strongly that you'll want to leave. Soon you'll be taking out the same goons who spawn camped you in proto gear.
There are some great things about this community that you won't find elsewhere. Primarily, most of the players here want you to do well. The more people who play Dust, the better for all of us.
Here are a few tips you may find helpful:
1) Mine the Forums. Look for the guns and suits folks are complaining about. You'll quickly learn which builds work, and more importantly which builds to avoid (i.e. Scout Suit).
2) Free-to-Play vs Pay-to-Win. Skip the AUR gear in favor of active and passive boosters. The Merc Pack offers the best return on investment for newcomers. AUR gear won't make you better. SP will absolutely make you better.
3) Get a Mic. It doesn't have to be high-end, but you need one. When you get out of Academy, start talking to people pre-match. Tell folks you're learning the ropes. Let the community work for you. We aren't all ***holes.
4) Protect your Record. You'll soon start receiving invites from recruiting officers from various corps. Remember that spies are commonplace here, so running with Corp A may prevent you from ever being accepted into Corp B. Choose wisely.
5) Avoid Local. Nothing here but trolls and guys in spaceships.
6) Solo Smart. If you see a guy go 30/0, add him to your contacts. Next time you see him pre-game, backout if he's on the other team. If you see six guys from the same corp on the other team, backout. If you see more than two Imperfects on the other team, backout.
7) Squad Up. Stick together and communicate with each other. Don't "LFS" in Local, better to jump into a squad pre-match. There's a chance they'll kick you after the match, but there's also a chance they might recruit you.

You are not SUPPOSED to be good solo, you're supposed to work together with others and help the team win.
Eventually we're getting PvE content, though beyond being fought against rogue drones we don't know how this will be implemented. If it's more eve-like than, say, Resistance 2's cooperative mode (think team and objective based pve), it will be soloable, if you know what you're doing. Maybe this will be something you can enjoy.
At the end of the day, soloers are a non-issue, as you are not the target of this game. If you still solo anyway, odds are you're not doing much to contribute to victory for your team either; pop that heavy in the middle of the field? Good going, you just let him get to where he's going faster. |

I was playing dust since early beta, the time when lag was the norm when on your tac net, when the heavy could kill of 3 guys no problem with his HMG,when the nano injector didn't do anything except grunt sounds a plenty when you tapped R1,There was even a time when that one update made matchmaking HORRIBLE,that was also the update that made me make a new character(Hadn't played in 6 months during that time,I wanted to build up SP).That time, matchmaking for me was getting paired with 3 GUYS,who are supposedly of "equal skill",EVERYTIME it was just 2v2 or 3v3 or 1v1.And guess what? That was the beta version where it was JUST MATCHMAKING.A few other guys had that problem besides me,I don't know if they stayed but that was the thing,so I just waited, sometime later, fixed. So the lesson here is,PATIENCE.Either that or practice,or build up some ISK and get some proto weapons too.But for me,the scrambler rifle, the scrambler rifle solves everything. |

4) Protect Your Record. Remember that spies are commonplace here, so running with Corp A could prevent you from being accepted into Corp B. You'll start receiving recruitment mail soon. Do your research before committing.
5) Avoid Local. Nothing here but trolls and guys in spaceships.
6) Solo Smart. You'll likely be playing solo to start. When you see someone go 30/0, add him to your contacts. Next time you see him on the other team, backout. If you see six guys from the same corp on the other team, backout. If you see more than two Imperfects on the other team, backout. These cowardly tactics will protect you from what some may call "broken" matchmaking.
7) Squad Up. Check the team roster in the war barge and squad up with other guys with mics. Communicate and stick together. Engage targets from complimentary angles. It's tough to take on a pile of red dots.
8) Do Your Homework. You've found the Forums. CEOPyrex, Bojo's School, and Dust University are other helpful resources. Much has changed with the release of Uprising, so be mindful of materials dated earlier than May 2013.
9) Tinker with Inputs. Experiment with sensitivity settings and aim assist until you've found what works for you.
10) Be Patient. Give the game 30 days before giving up. Accept that everyone gets wrecked on exiting the Academy. Just watch your funds and try to hit your weekly skill cap. The first month will be tough, but it's a necessary evil. It is all that protects us from the idiot rabble and little kids on CoD.
Best of Luck,
