Hi everyone.
My purpose here is not to complain, I just think this game has a lot of potential but it's currently just too unbalanced and frustrating and I believe this CAN be solved if the developers do something about it, so I'm here to share my experience.
Before you say "Hey, you're just a newbie, you gotta get some experience and better equipment", let me explain the whole thing.
Yes, I'm a fresh DUST player. But I'm an "aged", "hardcore" (if you want to call me that way...), I'm very experienced with almost any kind of game and expecially TPS and FPS. I have "trained" reflexes but most important I play clever.
So let's try DUST 514, I'm curious! I start as an assaulter. I fall in love with the tactical GLU rifle and I quickly get to 150 kills and a KDR of 3.50 in a few games, doing very good scores like 13-2, 16-0, etc. After that, SOMETHING CHANGES. Now matchmaking lets me choose what mode to play... "cool" I think, "I love Skirmish, now I can play it the whole time instead of boring Deathm... I mean, Ambush" BUT here's what happened:
For the entire match I've been killed over and over and over by Heavy machine/Proto wide-range cannon guys with BILLIONS Shield/Health points, One shot-kill shotgun dudes camping the objectives hiding in a dark corner with super scanners, Duvolle rifles of any kind and some weapons I don't even know what they are such sort of grenade-launcher or whatever. Ok, just a bad game..? No. From now on, this seems to be the new DUST 514.
What happened? Why does everything change as soon as I get into the game? Is this game's Matchmaking KDR based? Because, unlike different games where EVERYONE got the SAME HP, this WON'T work. It should be SP or WP based. I just CAN'T stand a chance against so much overpowered enemies, even detecting them and getting them unaware, from behind, in the open space while I'm in cover, with a GLU tactical rifle. I start shooting, they turn back, they see me... I'm dead. In a split second.
Upset, I try to build a second character and this time I spend some of my SP to get a consistent shield defense. I can still afford a GEK 38 which is good. This time I manage to hit a KDR of 4.20, doing awesome stuff and feeling like a 1 man army, winning almost every game. Until that happens again: Matchmaking now allows me to choose a game mode. This time I'm ready to anything, I know this is going to be bad.
Well, it's really bad. I get overwhelmed. I have a marshmellow-loaded gun and paper armor. The very best I can do is 4 kills/4 death.
I loved this game so much for the first 24 hours. I kinda hate it now... I can't do anything. It's very frustrating because this game got something MORE than all the other classic FPS games, something shiny and lovely, and it's such a shame it's so vastly unbalanced. I'm not saying "go to hell, I'm back to Battlefield and Uncharted 3", because this game CAN be awesome, but it really needs a fix.
I'm leaving it for now, but with the hope that Matchmaking will be sensibly improved. If that happens, I'll be back to play an amazing game. If that doesn't happen it would be really sad.
I wish you the best game experience.
Thanks for reading, see ya. |

Do you run with coordinated squads? Not saying that will completely solve your issues, but it will def help a lot. Currently, the only MM system is for extremely new persons, in the Battle Academy. After that, you're in with the rest of us. Make some friends, and you will see yourself rise to the top again. |

The one thing that makes you more survivable and more deadly than any skill points is experience. Being in a squad is a close second. If you're new and you Lone Wolf, prepare to die. A lot. Until you really learn the game. SP makes your mistakes less painful, but even protobears get plastered.
Top corps are stacked with experience, squads, and SP. On the bright side, many of them think the game is trash so they're a bit emo and mistake prone a times. Use it to your advantage. |

So that's the Academy. I guessed that was for very new players because I was really able to own anyone there lol. But once out of there, I just get destroyed. Well then, let's say DUST needs some sort of Matchmaking criteria...

Exactly. I read the OP and thought "wait. he thinks there's matchmaking. lol". There is no matchmaking currently. We have an academy which dumps you into the real world with a basic understanding of the match types and a standard level suit with maybe an advanced weapon. Not sure how you got to a GLU TAC while still in academy.
Right now if you want to win you need to get with a group and stop trying to go it alone.

lol gets out of berries skirmish server and feels the full force of new eden for a lone player.
my advice to you sir. throw your KDR out the window.. when i play alone i just ignore the terribly un-balanced servers..i mean its not even a rare occasion its every single server. .(a squad of 6 vets all running proto vs usually berries and a crappy squad.. with me fighting my a ss of going 13-10.
i play with my corp sometimes but there really good and every server is a complete wash-out..
also alot of people have practically been begging ccp to add servers where squads cannot join. but un-fortunatly ccp have ignored and added some stupid academy |

I'd say it NEEDS a matchmaking then... |

It's hard to argue against MM. It does def need it in pub matches right now, to give players the much needed experience and time to learn the game. The problem is this game isn't, and won't be, about pub matches. It's grand scheme is to be about shaping the political map of Eve Online, both through Faction Warfare and Planetary Conquest. But both of those are so new and barely fleshed out, that most people only have pub matches to do.
So yes, we need a matchmaking system in place. The sooner the better. But until then, do your best to find a good group of players to roll with, it will help minimize the loss and maximize the fun. |

The fact is, this is not Call of Duty. This is not Halo. This is not even Battlefield, though that's the closest in overall gameplay feel. This is very much a tactical, squad-based shooter.
If you lone wolf, you will die. If you run-and-gun, you will die. If you neglect your skills in favour of immediately unlocking Gun X, you will die. And if you neglect your loadouts in favour of pure gank and no mind to tank (be it armour, shield, or speed), YOU WILL DIE.
I have yet to use a single piece of BPC gear in the game (and I'm from the first wave of closed beta invites), and I have no problem holding my own... WHEN I'M IN A SQUAD. I regularly hit 1-2k warpoints per match... WHEN I'M IN A SQUAD. And when I say a squad, I don't mean randoms doing their own thing and no comms, I mean a squad that's working together, using voice to coordinate, calling out targets, and marking objectives (this even gives extra points! If your SC isn't marking objectives, leave the squad, you're LOSING POINTS!).
We don't really need matchmaking, what we need is some way of teaching people earlier that this is NOT the console shooter they're used to. This is the shooter skilled PC gamers have been playing for decades. If you don't adapt to this concept, YOU. WILL. DIE. |

LOL!
I hear you man! BUT, we actually need some of those player types to stick through and hang around. We don't want them all, but we need to attract a few to get the better ones in game.
PVE won't properly teach people to squad up and coordinate. IMO, some sort of MM needs to be in place so that new players can find and make friends in a competitive environment of pub matches. Whether or not the current Academy serves that purpose, I don't know, but with this OP, it clearly did not. Not everyone will come to the forums either, maybe a better tutorial will be the answer.

Some people say there needs to be matchmaking, but others counter that this would limit how a lot of aspects with the game. It would stop low sp players from seeing how effective certain high sp builds are etc, would limit the gameplay experience etc etc.
There's a couple of solutions to it, ranging from the bad to the good.
But word of advice, go look at the corporation recruitment section, have a browse through the various corps and go join one you like the look of. The game is much more fun when playing with a group, and they can provide invaluable knowledge and help with your sp/fittings. |

Totally in favour of MM myself, should base it off aggregate WP in squad and then send them into battle so noobs/ newish guys/ vets/ elites are all in roughly the same bracket and everybody having great tactical games against each other.
Currently proto stomp squads dominate which in turn makes players either leave (which is bad) or call in the legion of death taxi doom (which is arguably worst). What we got atm? Proto guys crying on the forums about LAVs ruining the game and new guys on the forum crying about Proto guys ruining the game.
Ill accept any form of bugged MM atm which can be fixed later rather than calling in a LAV to crush proto guys, laughing at getting kills whilst thinking am an ******* to have to be forced into the situation in the first place.
Telling people to get into squads with coms is a massive step forward but nobody can bs themselves and say it evens up the battlefield. |

Here is my suggestion on how matchmaking should work in the future.
The basic points being to split the queues between High, Low, and Null allowing the squad leader or individual flag themselves as available for those ques - Similar to the way multi-queue works in mag complete with bonuses for queuing 2 or more security areas. Then use the cumulative meta scores of both equipment and the innate skills that modify the equipment placed on a fitting to simply lock fittings that score too high out of the different security areas.
WP won't work for a number of reasons. First and foremost the fact that you can idle your way to prototype gear. Using total SP would make for a much better temporary fix until a more elegant solution can be put into place but would serve to divide what already isn't a very large player base much further than it should. |

You can gain SP passively, not even involved in the game, granted this means one is capable of using better gear but doesn't necessarily mean they have the experience. WP is gain actually playing the game.
I do like your idea though, and basing it of meta does make a lot more sense, if only to make it a more balance game in terms of gear, it does leave the door open for excellent players to go crazy with with militia setups... which would be inevitable either way. You sir have a good suggestion on your hands lol. |

You need a squad. This is made easy by joining a corp. Many corps are willing to train newbies if you have a mic.
You may wish to lone wolf, but it is not advisable. Match making will never solve 1 vs 6. We take new guys into battle all the time. Many are surprised at how fun squad based combat really is. There are a lot of blueberries. We need to teach them to be effective.
I look at the roster before battle and see 9 or 10 people not in squads, or several one man squads. Swallow your pride and squad up. |
