Tanks are disrespected and seen as trolls just like anything that is effective on the field. Tanks unlike dropsuits take a huge amount of skill points they are like a monster that keeps saying feed me and I will make you strong. You spend so much time grinding and grinding to fit the best modules and you gain so much in game experience. People come at you with av grenades, flux grenades, forge guns, swarm launchers, orbital strikes, instillations, and vehicles but still people are crying op without actually respecting the difficult it takes to pilot a tank. And still there are even more anti vehicle weapons coming honestly whenever I am in a game I can have almost half of the enemy team equipped with anti vehicle weapons and trying to kill me. Because I move so fast on the field and my team mates mostly focus on points I receive little support as it is hard for them to keep up. Even worse when I am with friends they gave little support as passengers or infantry because they are inexperienced and don't play with tankers that much. Guys if you hate it so much try it but dont try and get on the forums and create even more ways to kill us I have earned running through people I could have put all my time into a suit and did the same but I hate being an infantry. So bring your forge guns and op flux grenades and we will duke it out on the battlefield brings your friends and you might kill me. |

if you expect tank support, then i have one suggestion...
WAIT FOR THEM!
if you are so worried about them keeping up, then move slower, let them stay near enough to be useful support.
and common sense here, you're in a friggin' tank! you're THE BIGGEST target on the field in every senseble way, and can wipe infantry out like its nothing, of course everyone and their mother is gonna aim at you |

I like the fact that whether I am in a HAV or a Rail Gun Turret I can change the direction of the battle. At least a full squad is usually trying to kill me personally. Which is great because that squad is doing Nothing Else. They are not Capturing, nor defending, nor healing as their entire focus is on killing Me and whatever I have managed to effect the Battle with.
While I appreciate his views, I do disagree somewhat with Eris and his OP. The SP required to get Good in Forge Guns, Swarm Launchers and high level AV grenades can be nearly as much as a HAV driver has invested. I know because my alt is working in that direction as well as Gunner which requires Turret Skills by the bucket. Not to mention high level Drop Suits. I am not even close to those as yet. I need them but there are too many other Skills that must be handled first. |

I've posted on this subject before and will again here.
Tanks are tanks and are supposed to be tough, no doubt. That is what they are.
Because of this they have the ability to single-handedly decide the outcome of a match. Any tanker that says otherwise is absolutely lying.
Because of this strength, obviously most of, if not the entire team opposing the tank is going to attempt to take it out. But look at what you just said here. The OP even admitted this. He has THE WHOLE Team on the other side ATTEMPTING to take him out. You've monopolized the entire battle field even if you don't kill anyone....and believe me, you are killing people. If you weren't you wouldn't be rolling a tank. If you look at a leaderboard at the end of any match (esp a lopsided victory one) you'll see that the guys that are 20+/0-2 in K/D ratio were rolling in tanks. It was either that or that person knows where the spawn points are and was camping them repeatedly. Long story short, if I manage to take out your 1 tank, you've probably already killed me 3-4 times in the process and most likely have killed 15 other people during that time as well.
To have that kind of power it absolutely should take you tons of SP and $ to obtain. There should be in game infantry options to take you out. But let me tell you something from experience. The Swarm Launchers can do only two things, target installations and vehicles. It is absolutely useless against infantry because you can't even target them. They only do armor damage (at least the start up versions anyway) so to kill the right kind of tank with one easily will take 6-7 shots. It only holds two shots per clip, takes a decade and a half to lock on and reload, and meanwhile the tank or his entourage has killed me if I am lucky enough to get off one shot. "Well, spec up then!" would be your reply. Well that's all fine an good, but just like you've been grinding away just to be able to get yourself in a decent tank, I've been grinding away just to get the ability to not be completely decked out in malitia gear for every item I am able to equip. As a sniper, I would tend to think I am actually investing in things to make me a better sniper, not a tank killer. And I would venture to guess 95% of new players are in the same boat.
Then there are the shield tanks, which require a different weapon to kill, and guess what? Unless you picked a Sentinel as your start up build, you don't have access to that gun. You again have to invest in the ability to actually equip one, and then invest even more just to have a chance to even be somewhat decent with it.
This same issue goes for the AV grenades, not to mention the fact that I actually have to get somewhat near the tank in order to hit one. Guess what? You also have the ability to move. So all you have to do to avoid my grenade is move in a certain direction away from the grenade. Seems pretty simple to me.
Lastly, if one tank isn't bad enough, I have had matches where the other team has three tanks on the field all at once in an Ambush. One tank is enough of a challenge to kill. Three makes it absolutely impossible. |

So he "pushed you back" but you backed away and didn't get blown up. Then what happened? How did this story end? You probably rolled over him and killed him and 20+ of the clones on his side. What was your K/D ratio at the end of the match? I mean honestly.
See, this is the thing that these tank people never talk about. There is a reason why you are rolling in a tank. They absolutely own the field. There is a reason why on some skirmishes you hide them out of bounds (especially the defender side of Line Harvest Skirmish so that nobody can hit them and have 3-4 snipers sitting there next to you and probably are one yourself. Because if anybody does manage to find your tank sitting there with a swarm launcher, you know as infantry I can't hit you and you get an easy shot on a Heavy, slow moving target that can't hit you and if it comes any closer will time out and die in the out of bounds marker.
They don't tell you that they go 20+/0, 30+/0 and even seen them go 40+/0 on some maps. They don't tell you that they get together on Manus Peak Ambush and roll 3-4 tanks at the same time.
And yes, I've seen tanks die at the hands of stupid drivers. Driving it head first into a building in the middle of 3 other tanks isn't going to end well. No disrespect to a person who can drive one skillfully around a map and not run it into terrain that will make it get stuck or get damaged. What I don't like and I think is absolute garbage is trying to tell me that tanks are not powerful enough, and that infantry stand a ghost of a chance. I call BS on that and I am sure there are many out there that will agree with me. Tanks do not belong on Ambush maps, esp not more than one of them at a time on the same side. |

Tanks only own the field if you let them. If you've got 0-20k SP invested into AV, then don't expect to kill me all by yourself. A single advanced/prototype Forge Gun can kill a 2 million ISK shield tank in 3- 4 shots.
Seriously, you should try using a tank, it's a lot harder than you think. It takes a lot of SP, teamwork, tactics, and skill if you really want to be successful with it.
Btw, I've seen infantry guys that consistently go 18/0 or even 25/0 in pub matches, I guess that means they're OP too. |

Please, no real player says being a good HAV player doesn't take skill.
But BS is BS. Every other role/fitting has drawbacks and limits.
Tanks can destroy infantry, land vehicles, air ships, infrastructure, can snipe, can move faster than infantry,..., all with ONE clone. Basically, at this point, its stupid not to be using an HAV as your super drop suit.
Right now, and while past is no indication of future, CCP has not really delivered much. So it is what it is.
PS: For a good infantry to get same KDR as good HAV requires a lot more effort/skill.
note: Im full Assault AR, it was my fault thinking this game would be designed around the player, but as it stands this is a game of HAVs. I had my fun, but these are classic mistakes, there is nothing that shows any advancement in FPS genre than the ones from ten years ago. They literally are re-inventing wheel/relearning mistakes. Take that back, some of the previous games are way more polished.
Four tiny maps in Ambush, and after many thousands of matches you still get stuck, hives fall through floor,...

Nope, everything does not kill me. I might not be pro, but I am good. I have fun, even take out tanks, but they destroy my ability to get Warpoints in a house(HAV player) always wins manner.
The key is what do you do with one clone versus anyone else does with one clone. Why does everybody else have to change/adapt to deal with you. But an HAV player does not. That is the issue. You didn't say why your one clone can do everything/practically self sufficient.
You don't see the issue of telling other players to change and adapt to you, while you just use your one HAV?
Classic problem, not even unique to FPS genre...

The reason why people have to adapt when someone uses an HAV is because #1 That's what it's supposed to do and #2 You can't have an all-purpose dropsuit that can deal with any situation that arises. if you want #2 then you could always play this wonderful game called Call Of Duty.
Tank drivers also have to adapt to the battlefield too. Unless i'm playing against a team full of noobs, i have to worry about Forge Gunners, Orbital strikes, AV/Flux grenadiers, and even other tanks. I have to be in constant communication with my squad otherwise i'd be at a higher risk of getting blown up. Remember, it only takes about 2 - 4 shots from a decent forge gunner to take destroy a very well-built shield tank.
Believe me, using a tank is harder and a lot riskier than most people think. If you're making a profit from tanking in pub matches, you've got to be incredibly good. |
