first off, crossbows wouldn't be manufactured by Gallente simply for the fact they love to make Advance Technology as well as Drones to have everything done for them. this makes crossbows from Gallente a "most likely never" kind of senario.
Second, do you even know how a crossbow works? obviously not sence you called the ammo BOW's, which are a different weapon. They are called BOLTS and they have to be handloaded as well as the string (which is twice as LONG as the body if you layed it next to the crossbow) needs to be pulled back.
Third, you need to be able to eather drop your targets Fast or in One Shot in this game. sence the crossbow would be doing only 60 HP, limited range, and everything NEEDS to be done by hand....you an't going to see pratical use in Dust....Ever. |

Despite the errors in his post something like a crossbow could work. Maybe some kind of semi auto bolt thrower. It could have maybe 6 bolts in it's clip. A sort of mid to long range scout type weapon. Fires as fast as you can pull the trigger. Lots of damage with a longer reload time because you have to insert each bolt into the launcher |

Oh god, its back.
We use electromagnetically propelled superheated plasma rounds, railguns, lasers, missiles, even the most primitive race has proper guns and grenade launchers. Using a crossbow to propel rounds would be insane considering how advanced we all are.
I would prefer a rifle that shoots bolts instead. |

I like the idea. Nothing wrong with a techy launcher that resembles a crossbow. Ammo types could be really interesting, from timed explosives to shield piercing arrow heads. Make it 90hp, if it ignored dropsuit shields and was semi automatic, with a 6 round clip... it could be doable.
Why have it instead of plasma guns and all the other crazy tech? Because it's an efficient delivery system of larger payloads, similar to grenade launchers, only a little smaller projectile. Instead of wire, why not electromagnetic slings? |

I loved the bow in Crysis 2.
For DUST a silencer on the Tactical Sniper rifle would be much more consistent within the universe. And if you think bullet drop wasn't an issue regarding Sniper rifles than wait until you get a maximum range bolt into a Merc.
I didn't notice any inverse law regarding damage over range as is the case with a crossbow. At half range the damage would be max but each 10% additional the damage will drop some amount. 5-10% would be consistent with the technology.
Unless the atmosphere is such it lubricates the bolt in flight.
Overall it is not a weapon I would want in DUST.
An entire new set of animations and modeling would be required as the crossbow will clip into structures if held correctly and one is standing next to an obstacle. Adding unique animations and new 3d model resolutions are not something I would suggest under any circumstance at this stage of development. |

Minmatar Bolt Gun:
Single shot, high damage, charge weapon that's effective for medium range engagements. You load a 16" bolt into the back of the gun made of some random EVE metal that would work. You charge the weapon sending ultra high frequencies through the bolt, the higher the charge the more damage it does. Once the weapon is fully charged it automatically releases the super heated bolt or else risk damaging the gun.
I don't know if this will help make everyone happy, but a crossbow has met alot of hate in the past.
EDIT: doesn't resemble a crossbow what so ever, more comparable to the javelin gun from deadspace 2 |

What if the bolts don't do any damage, but they attach the the enemies armor and destroys their shields. That would make the crossbow a great one-shot support weapon. More long-term than an anti-shield grenade. |

The concept of using mechanical advantage through a tension unit (also called a cam) in a universe where Railguns fire hyperheated bolts of molten metal is absurd. The only time that a weapon of this nature would be warranted is when sensors detect EM energy (or any techno babble for that matter) and immediately alert someone to it's presence.
A better, albeit still worthless, application is a pneumatic ion bolt projector (or something) which scrambles sensors on suits thus impairing their A/V communication, HUD, Radar, and Shield / Module use. |

If you want a game where bows and crossbows fit in, go play Chivalry! that's an awesome game!
But I don't think they'd work in dust, despite them being en vogue in FPS games recently.
What I do think would work would be a similar weapon for our scouts, that fills the role of a silent, nigh undetectable weapon for guys who like to sneak around on the battlefield as opposed to plinking at people from the sidelines. Make it reasonably powerful (1 headshot, two body shots kill), but slow, so you'll die using it when an enemy is alerted to your presence, make it silent so the shooter won't show up on radar (well, actually I'm not sure if that "feature" is in, or planned...).
Or like the Nova Knife merely as a humiliation weapon... |

If somebody wants to shoot a bolt in New Eden, They would probably do it same way a mass driver shoots grenades, magnetically. Already done in deus ex series.
Quote:"Rather than a traditional tension based crossbow, the boltcaster accelerates a bolt electromagnetically. The bolt injects a toxin that inflicts non-lethal poison damage over time.GÇ¥- description of Boltcaster, Deus Ex: Invisible War
So something like this could fire any ammo a cross bow could, but with more force behind it.
I personnally would rather just have a high damage, no blast radius tactical mass driver instead. Fires a big metal lawn dart sized flechette instead of a grenade, longer range of tactical means a flatter arc, so easier to get a direct hit then standard mass driver. |

I don't mind the introduction of crossbows. I always welcome variety, BUT...
I don't see it having any true purpose in a match that some other weapon cannot accomplish.
The railgun sniper rifle is the Dust equivalent of a pre-medieval era bow, or a renaissance era crossbow.
The fletchette replaces the arrow and bolts, and electromagnetic capacitors replace the string.
But the physical principle for projectile deployment is the same.
A crossbow would fill a super tiny, nearly non-existant niche. Perhaps its bolts could have a point of glowing plasma just like the nova knife.
I still don't mind having one though. Maybe as a portable sidearm. |

People don't seem to agree with the idea of crossbows. It would make for a perfect stealth weapon, however. A silent nanite injector tipped bolt that fills the target with hostile nanites that consume biological flesh and corrode electronic circuitry. Instead of being a real 'weapon' in the sense that it deals instant damage, it could deal damage over time as well as disrupt sensors and other electronic systems. The bowstring could be a ultratense nanofiber composite that shoots with far more force with far less noise. A perfect espionage tool. It wouldn't be used in open combat, of course, it fires far too slowly for that. Perhaps it could deal more damage and cause more interference when hitting the brain or spine, due to the hostile nanites having easier access to our fragile little gray matter. |

Normally I try to refrain from trolling, but you guys are all mental. Like was already pointed out, this is a highly advanced society, we don't need rocks or bows.
Now instead of living in caves, lets try going the other direction.
Rifle projection rounds that home in on the target mid flight and adjust to hit people around corners.
Weapons that are all in one inclusive, like phasers. You can set for single shot, burst fire, full auto or nuclear bomb. Maybe a few more settings, but those things can do just about anything.
Automated defense firing weapons. If you can see a target on your HUD, when it appears in front of you then you automatically shoot. (I know this would suck for an FPS, but this is a legitimate weapon these people would actually invent) Same goes for suit based rear facing defense units and such. Think like Iron Man.
Speaking of iron man, what about that laser pulse grid thing that chops up everything in the second movie. That seems legit.
So yea, Tony Stark was in a cave and made super awesome stuff. Lets not have super awesome stuff and then hit each other with rocks.
That is all.

Basically what you are asking here is a long range grenade launcher. I could possibly see that. Firing EMP or Explosive grenades at range for low PG requirement. However bows are old fashion.
Hey, your name is Tau, those guys are cool in Warhammer, and they also have a cool kit. How about instead of a grenade launcher its a Drone launcher and the drones are explosive. You launch your "grenade drone" and then it homes in and blows up the enemy.
Much cooler and high tech then a bow. |

We can use drones as scouting equipment. |

Ok lets try and save this thread... cross bows... i mean really!!
Reign Bows - Uses Magnetic fields instead of stored elastic tension to launch variable projectiles at long ranges incredibly accurately.
- Reign over your enemies mercilessly with this highly versatile weapon. Be it raining high penetration, explosive, or disruption bolts into the eye sockets of your hated foes. This well known weapon is a pleasure to use in any situation, but is most obviously noted for the "rainbow" atmospheric effect upon firing along its barrel. Originally a product of the "Quafe" corporation as a publicity stunt, its military potential was soon realized after one particular empire wide advert, in which a high guard of the Amarr was shown, not only delighting kids with rainbows, but also demolishing a former Quafe competitor factory... It is now in heavy production in all 4 major empires, after a rumored multi-million isk rights deal.
Note: All producers deny sternly that reignbows are powered by little pink ponies. |

Crossbows? Not a chance.
But if Minmatar got their hands on a space age nail gun... well, I could see it firing metal poles at the enemy, to say the least. Maybe even superheated. But Crossbows? Pfft, maybe if I was huntin' Dust's non-existent wildlife. |

But really, the only reasons I can see for a crossbow are.
It really would be low PG/CPU It can go over cover where most guns would run into cover Silent.
Crossbows are lowtech, Even Mims have super high tech ships, they just aren't as super super as Caldari.
1. There are other low PG/CPU options 2. Grenades already fill this role nicely 3. Actually all Railguns should be silent. Its just electricity and magnetics, if you have driven in a electric car you know they are silent. |
