im a new player and quickly losing interest be cause it seems to take forever to grind for better gear.
im getting killed easily with upper tier players and have resorted to sniping so i dont have a consistently bad kdr.
it sucks when you get the drop on someone and have to unload a whole clip before he turn around and hits you with 4-5 shots and your dead.
Now i understand the whole....."its F2P, you shouldnt complain" angle, but why would most people spend weeks or months of getting owned in matches that arent balanced?
Im trying to figure out if there is something "special" to this game thats worth all the grind that makes it different from all the other millions of FPS out there. i see what people call "depth" but it seems to be just loadout customization more than anything else. Is the idea to get good gear so you can go seal clubbing on the next gen of new players?
Seems to me this game isnt very noob friendly.
oh and id like some real feedback and not just some lame, "well just dont play" responses.

Not n00b friendly? ...Welcome to New Eden ;)
If you are just starting and are very low on SP/gear you obviously aren't going to take out a high level player running proto easily. So start picking your battles. If you got them in the crosshairs you can see what they are running - keep your distance and fire off just a few rounds and if it's not really doing much then find a new target.
What I recommend is to start working as a logi. Even at a low level you can be very productive to your team and earn a lot of WP. Once you've gained enough SP and maxed out all of your CORE skills, then you can start slaying with the big boys.
Hope this helps! |

The game is hell. But finding someone who can run next to you and give you the ropes helps. And honestly, getting to and running proto isn't necessarily the best path. Find a weapon or playing style that you find fun, for me it's sentinels or scouts. Av on scouts. Getting to where you can run basic and take out officer suits and gv.0s, that's what I strive for. Making them waste isk compared to your 5k suit. If you want to squad up some times let me know. And sorry about your experience, mine was hell starting too |

To be perfectly honest, starting out, a slayer role is not a good place to start to get SP for better gear. It's going to suck, but you really shouldn't give a damn about your K/DR. Especially if you want SP. Once you've got the SP and gear you can very easily work your K/DR back to a reasonable amount. When I started this character (an alt) I was getting five or six kills a match at most, and dying upwards of ten times. Now that I've got the SP to have most things to Advanced, I'm managing 15+ kills and generally less than 8 deaths. Of course, I'm not the type to care about my K/DR, so I will run purposely into stupid situations to save a teammate, or help push an objective. The more active guns you have on the field, the better your chances of a win. So while I try to stay alive, the match won't be won if you play it safe constantly.
My personal opinion, if you want SP quickly so you can get to be actually good at the game, go either the Scout or Logi route. Just starting out, uplinks are going to be the fastest and safest way to gain SP, and you don't even have to do anything. Just dropping two uplinks on the field nearby an objective, I get a minimum of 800 WP a match, and average 6k SP per battle. So get your uplinks up to advanced and you'll be getting the SP for gear very quickly. If you can hop into a decent squad, going rep tool logi is an amazing way to get SP, but you're in more danger since youre directly in battle, and much squishier than your teammates. When I went rep logi, I averaged over 15k SP per battle and 2k WP. Much more in meat grinder domination matches. If I joined a squad now with proto rep tools I could probably get the SP back I spent putting into rep tools in less than a week. And more.
I promise you, while shooting people may be the main draw of the game for many people, you aren't going to do a good job shooting anything unless you either do the frustrating grind, or you ride the support role until you're at a comfortable SP level and want to try slaying again.

It takes like a month to get better. Which is nothing, have you heard of Elder scrolls online? that game takes 3 months to barely be any decent. All i can say is that what ever you are aiming for in dust you will unlock it. Be thankful there is no RNG and forced grouping in order to get the good stuff which is what elder scrolls online and destiny do.

For the moment get a medium suit and stack it with HP, and equipment to benefit the team. You want to learn to survive before you can kill, and you'll be helping the big guys too. Stick with the masses and develop situational awareness(be paraniod).
The game is hard, especially for new players...if you aren't having fun, just quit. Honestly you'll be doing yourself a favor considering how bad matches are today plus the players.

Unbalanced? You don't even know what balance is. Screw your kdr, it's better for you to learn how to play the game. Get really good at shooting, learn to work with your team. You're starting in a field of hardened vets that care about what matters on the battlefield winning/situational domination they don't care that you're a scrub, they don't care that you can't play this game. Less QQ more pew pew (I stole that saying). These matches are a little winner take all because entire teams give up because tons of people can't mentally handle this game, it punishes the weak and the ones using poor tactics. You probably won't be any good at this game until you hit 40 something million sp simply because you haven't addapted to the mechanics and flow of battle. As a blueberry you think 10 times more about what to do than a vet and it's all about the wrong stuff.

Find a corp and get some friends as quick as you can. If you run with a squad and tell them you're a newer player, they'll show you the ropes. It helps you so much when you have 2-3 guys beside you on the field who have your back, they can pick you up when you get killed, give you reps to keep you alive, call out where the enemy is, and help you throw more damage down range to kill people.
If you don't wanna find a corp and have trouble making friends, use squad finder or just find a random blue on the field who looks like they know what they're doing and try to stick with them.
In real life you don't have guys going off on their own because that's usually suicide, they always go in a squad because there is great strength in numbers c:

Yes, there is something special about this game. Believe it or not the grind is part of it. Every skill takes forever to get to lvl 5. The first level is easy. The second is much harder, the third much harder again, etc, etc. You grind forever trying to get to the next level. You can get good enough to be functional pretty quickly but getting really good, that takes forever.
The problem with this is that you're not supposed to be going up against the fantastic players, the "stompers". But because of broken matchmaking and my own belief that at least part of this is deliberate, noobs and solos get put into teams that are up against squads of really elite players. CCP seems unwilling or unable to fix this.
Nonetheless, I'm continuing to grind. Like you I snipe, these days, usually only after I've been sniped by someone else. But I started off sniping, and it's still my favourite role, er, rifle, in the game. But these days I scout. My sniper suit is in fact a scout suit so I can scout and snipe in the one suit if I wish. My character is also heavily training Caldari skills so all of this is just fine for her.
You can survive the game long enough to get good but you need to understand this can and will take years, even if you were to only train the one suit and weapon, with all the core skills that are required for everything in the game. The big problem for you is finding any enjoyment in being stomped. My advice is, don't get stomped. Continue to do what you are doing - go sniping, or like me, go scouting. I get an unreasonable amount of enjoyment out of running around the map cloaked, hacking installations and some objectives, right under the noses of the enemy. It's fun.
You can have fun in this game, just don't try to do it on the same terms as your opponents. I've gotten to the point where, as a SCOUT, I can run up to heavies that are engaged in battle with my teammates and hit them with a bolt pistol, and they don't even know I'm there. That's fun. Sometimes it doesn't work, but that's part of the fun and excitement, too. Find a way to enjoy the game without playing it on the same terms as the stompers. That's the way to keep playing. It's a great game, but you need to avoid the broken aspects of it. :) |

Hi and welcome!
I-¦m an 1 month old merc and you are soo right in your comment. My best advice, squad up with somebody. Learning coallition channel is ok to ask for assistance in career, they will mostly ignore you because of noob, but all the sudden someone takes time and teach. Don-¦t run solo or be in first row, stick with some of the blue might be good idea. Sp boosters might also be good.
Good luck! |

Isn't there a tip in the fane that tells you your efficiency rating vs other players? Don't engage if you see "pro" in their name. Unless of course its an apex suit. Never engage anything with pro in its name.
If you aim down your sights at someone and you see AK.0,Ck.0,gk.0,or Mk.0 then its a good bet that you should run away. Usually its an assault suit and those can push your face in quick. If its a scout then you have a small chance. Sentinels and commandoes are no nos. Those heavy weapons or dual light weapons will kill ya quick.

That was said in a review on Star Wars: Battlefront. It really struck home with me because I realize that that is a major issue with the NPE as a whole.
To put it simply: There needs to be less dependence on raw skill and power level of fittings and more opportunities for tactical value and player shaping/agency. A player, regardless of skill, should be able to outwit his opponent through fitting and tactics. The opportunities with which this occurs are few and far between.
In an optimal world I'd like see more EWAR options besides just the awful profile/precision system that is so binary. I'd like to see more opportunities for players to shape the battlefield in their favor rather than so much reliance on keeping a crosshair on a target. I'd love for there to be a way for a new player to jump into a battle and wreck ass using the tools available to him and not have feel as though he's ineffective due to unlock gating and fighting against the god awful control schemes.

wow.
i honestly didnt expect such great responses. I was expecting "quit crying noob".
Anyway after hearing yall yall have given me new focus as far as taking other roles besides just COD style run and gun. I will look to support more with uplinks and repairs and may even try the scouting and continue sniping some when i want to actually get some kills. Although, i still believe that some kind of MM system would help attracting new players and give the veterens more than alot of seals to club.
question though, ive heard numerous times "it takes years........"...........
now seeing as im just starting this game and im sure years from now this game will be far outdated, is it worth the time spent to continue, Ive found when they put some games for F2P after awhile they tend to die off.
Is there any indication of this happening anytime soon?
Either way thanks for the quality advice and i will take that advice and apply it. The game is fun when im actually accomplishing something so im looking forward to trying the routes yall suggested.

I can tell you one thingie boyko. I playing this game because i like idea behind its concept. I playing this game because friends here.
Without these two it is just cloud castle, nonexistent thingy. There is nothing special about this program.
There is not any special items. Game is full of flaws, like bugs, glitches, and especially infamous lag.
I can tell youthis game is basicaly empty box, in what you can or cannot fit. Imagine this game like empty box and you will get answer to any question of yours ;)
Right now that box if full of old wood lices, hardened by years (i mean literally) of waiting for better future. Sadly in past we saw that many setback we already know the future of this game. And that future is still same state with some imaginary implements and hunting the FoTM through LAG.
Nothing else boyko, just empty cardbox with some lices feeding on it. Just imaginatory cloud castle. Empty vase full of promises but still just empty vase ;)

Yup but from view of normal customre battlefront is still bigger fun. Im quite sad which way Dust went since release to be honest. I feel like we actuelly have more in closed beta. That canyons and open turets, hacking orbs. It feel as it is right now, flat.
I would like to see more tactics, like we saw before in MAG for example. Few static maps but many chooses how to react to opponents. What we have here, there is not strategy at all to be honest.
And idea of better armor, weaponary, vehicles etc. Even that should be somehow limited in my side of view.
Like honetly i got the concept what is behind but game have too many cons. And fun is mostly lost under that all implements, imbalance and technical difficulties.
If you ask me how many time i have proper fun with playing in this mount i will tell you, three times. And because that three games were not helvete lagy.
I had chance to ply battleground and its fun i must admit, not too much for tactics but for vening with friend and beer fun. And what i feel mostly after one evening in dust? Honestly emptiness and disappointment, what is not great.
After that whole years i still do not see, i do not feel that fullfill or how i can explain my feeling. This game can be awesome, but sadly i still see ore and more issues. And im here since closed beta, just imagine what newbie who just made his persona right now will feel after few games (most actually losed ones).

Sandbox DEFO not, be honest boyko. This is not sandbox at all. GTA is sandbox.
Excuses? Let me stop here, game is not great and we all know it. There is some flaws and i do not see in his post any made excuses just because he see the game how it is.
That grow thingie? Boyo im here since beta and im 31 this game needs to grow not me or anybody else.
Because what i feel is basicaly not progression. I see some new thingies on map, new skins for time/aurum and that is all.
Bugs still same, FoTM still same, unbalance changing but still unbalance, bigger and bigger gap between newbies and vet.boykos, invisible walls on same places, nonexisten tactics.
How this should be apealing to new boyo?
I really pray for better of this game.
In my eyes this game is like old pub, where you go for some fun with friends, but toilets are still smelly and unclean and you everytime woke up with headache and stomach problems because beer pipes are not in good state.

Out witting my opponent is exactly what I do 16+ times a match and it doesn't always work haha. Unless you are ganging up on someone 3-1 it's generally not a great idea to grab a proto suit and try and gank someone head on. It's much better to use tactics. I normally run advanced or apex and use my skill and tactics to take the strain off my gun game which will never stand up to the likes of the laggy ssd using bastards with insane twitch skills. |

Send me a message in game and i will help you get placed in a proper corporation that will uplift your dust experience. You are going to need a lot of advice about what to put your SP into. The main thing a corporation should do and its what i used to do is put you in a squad of vets that will kind of be your protection and stay close to them in the match. As they will handle much of the killing while you can do support roles dropping uplinks and repairing people that will net you large amounts of XP. What we used to do is give the new player a repair tool and the rest of use would be a heavy as you will be getting a lot of XP by helping the heavys with ammo and reps. The grind for better gear is part of the game but proto gear won't help without passive abilitys and flatout ingame experience. Forget your KDR and dont fall into the thought that snipeing will help you or anyone. Get right in the fight and learn from experience is key. If you need any amount of isk let me know because i have not much use for all of it and remember to have fun you can get super serious latter in your dust life.

i understand everyones points.
it does seem like an old school game as far as graphics, etc. but I do like the wide array of custom loadouts and map sizes. I'm a veteran Battlefield player, Counterstrike, Team fortress etc and it definitely has some depth these games do not.
Im not going to give up on it right now if there are loadouts i can use that are actually useful to get a win. So i will try to find some of yall in game and get some veteran advice.
My main problem is im a grown man with a job and kids that doesnt get to play 8 hours a day so my time is limited........with all due respect to those who do have that time. Im jealous sometimes of that haha

Its not you, its the game.
In all honesty, if you get frustrated, take a break and come back later.
Your merc will earn passive SP, and the game is always changing, so when you come back in days/weeks/months you will have a little easier of a go.
Also, there is both MM and team building, you just don't notice it with in game numbers being so low at this point.
I think if you like deep and complex shooters, Dust is the way to go. You just have to look at it in terms of the long run, as the fun factor can wax and wane at points.
Also, look through the tookie training grounds section. There are a lot of good write ups about roles and nuances.

That is not strategy. It is big xp maker, but not a strategy if you do not use basic of tactics for hives and droplinks.
Game nned to find proper balance between killing thingies and using supportive class. Right now it looks like puzzled system to be honest XD

i honestly didnt expect such great responses.
Yes, "it takes years", but only to get to level 5 of all the necessary skills. You should aim to get to level 3 of those skills first, and where necessary higher levels of select skills to unlock others which you then need to train to level 3. Once you have done that, start methodically training all those skills to 4 and then finally 5. Unless you don't want to specialise, just train the specific suits, weapons and modules that you wish to use. Be wary of suit bonuses - certain suits give you bonuses for certain weapons, usually racially linked. Again, if you don't want to specialise, train everything to level 3 and then just match the weapons with the suits.
Training everything to level 3 won't take years. It will take months, but it won't take years. I have been actively playing for about 4 months and have most of what I need to level 3. It's key to understand that every level of a skill takes at least as long to train as all the previous levels put together, so training level 4 is like training 1, 2 and 3 all over again.
And don't forget about "core skills" - electronics, engineering, shields and armour (armor) which can radically change the way you fit your suits and how effective they are. There are some who will tell you that core skills should actually be trained before anything else, as they effect everything. But of course, you have to train suits and weapons somewhere along the way, so a more balanced approach is probably more appropriate.
Lastly, yes, it's a possibility this game will die on the PS3. Unfortunately, other than vague comments at best, CCP still refuses to give any indications as to whether there will be a port to another platform, or even if there is, whether or not our accounts will be moved there, with all assets and skills intact. But if you do the training to level 3 as above, you will still enjoy however long this game sticks around. The longer it does, the higher will be your skill levels and the more you will enjoy it! |

Keeping uplinks on the field is very important. Try to focus on where you are placing your uplinks.
You want to try to keep your uplinks placed in a location that allows your teammates to be able to spawn in and quickly move to where they need to be at that particular time during that particular match while at the same time trying to have your uplinks in a location where the redberries won't be able to see it nor will they be able to see your teammates spawn in. (this can take some time to figure out)
As for strategy points I find that those change depending on the flow of the match as well as who you are playing with/against so I really can't comment on that one without actually seeing what you're doing in battle.
Just make sure that you try to stay close to your teammates and if you see your teammate shooting at a reberry then you should make sure that you shoot at that redberry also. In this game you should hold as much pride in your kill assists as you would your actual kills.
What gamemodes are you playing? I would recommend staying away from Domination because the majority of the scrubby players seem to flock to that gamemode and those same scrubby players will quit on you when they see that they are facing a challenge.
Also, what Faction are you running? The most effective way of engaging the reberries in battle differs depending on the Faction you are running as well as the Dropsuit and Weapon you are using. |
