bear90211 wrote:(This is EDITED for more clarification, a bit more ease for your eyes, and to make a little more sense, you will understand if you read this earlier)
So I have been here since Chromosome, and my personal opinion as a Veteran duster, (Although most of you don't care about that, not sure CCP does either) is that TTK should get looked at (It's a little too fast.) there's mindless Newbrows running around in every game mode, Tanks & AV are out of whack, PC is still broken, and all that kind of stuff but this list, will fix quite a lot of stuff. Newbrows, Frame rate, *LAG* Scamming, matchmaking (In a way, not entirely) and maybe vehicles / AV. just read it, and please discuss.
MY solution would be:
1. Academy Reworking - Tiered system. Tier 1 - Simple tutorials of every weapon, using prefit suits (Basic) on an open map (No players) within this tutorial also - grenades. Afterwards they can go into the tier 1 battles. (3.5x SP gain. Ends @ 2.5M SP)
Tier 2 - Simple tutorials of suits, modules, and equipment. also a small explanation of the roles. Skills will also be covered here. Afterwards they can join Tier 2 battles, not Tier 1. (3.0x SP gain. Ends @ 6M SP)
Tier 3 - tutorials of the market, social, corporate, and warbage. if anything else has not been covered, it will be put here. Afterwards, they can play in Tier 3 battles. Immediately after passing this tier, they are given a free non-tradable respec, a moderate ISK injection, and say some other little present, like a skin. they then can transfer ISK, join corporations, and can play the mercenary battles. etc.(2.5x SP gain. Ends @ 12.5M SP)
2. Implement an Auto Cache Clearer for after ever battle.
3. Not Loading sockets outside of both teams redlines (Basically everything outside the playing field)
4. Cut off the map 500M out from the redline on both sides ( The map goes on for around 7K in some directions, all sockets loaded if you get a mini DC and get to roam, I did once.)
5. Try to simplify the amount of polygons, smoothing out the map, and recreating hills to be less steep. (Make the loaded objects only have a solid outer wall, not every individual line. also, try dumbing down the fire/lightning effects from buildings.) with this try to make it look practically as good, neat, but not so many polygons. also take a look at the MCC, try giving that a makeover too. (This WILL take some time, and a few coders, but it IS doable with the DUST budget & profit currently.)
6. *NEW (Addition from old topic) -
A. Work on replacing ALL MLT items andmake STD the beginning Tier, Basically everything STD is considered 'basic' right? Well then make that cost no SP to unlock! for BPOs - Do an automatic upscale from MLT to STD BPO scale, initially removing around 90 items from the marketplace.
B. Separate the market (From fitting suit/vehicle) into 2 different things, 1 - the ISK,LP,DK section, and 2 - the AUR section. this will reduce the amount of things people see on screen, and Vets will have an easier time fitting suits they are working on.
7. (Extra little things.) A. Remove the "Progression" tab, no veteran in their right mind would use this, and with the tutorials this would not be needed anyways. (It also takes up quite a bit of space on your HDD or SSD, creating unnecessary lag/ frame-rate drops)
B. Remove in game rank names - Just adds more letters to the killboard, should be removed OR put under 'Show Info" instead.
C. Trading menu like Defiance, Runescape or... well you get what i'm talking about.
D. Remove the"Get Aurum" from every page in the market, countless times I have been thrown into that 30 second PS Store loading screen under the LP store area, it should be restricted to the front page.
E. Vehicles & AV - Reset the stats of vehicles to those of 1.4 Uprising, give Swarms the same stats as they were in 1.4 but somehow equal out the 6 swarm volley to the 4 swarm volley we have now, with a 200m Range cap, and a base 25 points of damage nerf or more, depending on feedback after this. Add back in the old vehicle modules and over time reintroduce Enforcers, Marauders, Black Ops, and then Officer, respectively it would be this tier system- what we have now (STD) enforcers (ADV) Mauraders (PRO) Black Ops (PRO/EXP) Officer (Unnamed yet) eventually also- create racial vehicle for the Minmatar, and Amarr.
I can add on more things. feel free to reply, and discuss this list.
I saw runescape trading. 100% agree.

When you play a fight, the textures, structures, etc.. are loaded in your memory (RAM). If the memory is too short, it usually uses the HDD/SSD to keep charging stuffs but it's way slower than on the RAM. It seems like the RAM and the data temporarly charged on your HDD/SSD aren't cleared properly so they accumulate and cause framerate drops.
That's the reason why it's recommended to reset before a PC match to help avoiding these framerate drops. Turning your ps3 off clears the RAM and does what DUST should do at the end of every battle.
Hope I made myself clear enough. Didn't want to go to much into details so things might not be working exactly the way I described them.

Actually, map polishing would require one level designer to look at the map within the editor and have fun polishing. But this is the "standard" way you design a level, it might not be the same way CCP does, so it's pretty much speculation.
I seriously doubt there's real-time global illumination in Dust: the light is almost certainly baked in order to make it much less memory intensive.
I think I agree on the 3d models being too hi-poly for what a PS3 can handle, I mean, look at your character in the mercenary quarter: it's one of the most refined character model I've seen on PS3 and you actually have 32 of them in game.
I also think the LOD is a bit off.
I also absolutely agree on maps being way too massive and memory-intensive compared to the playable area.
Of course, this is just speculation since we have no acces to the editor / engine etc. nor we have ever been told how things works exactly.

Thanks for the feedback, but I really wanted a reply from the OP (since he seems to be the expert).
The problem I have with his quote (and his entire post in fact) is that he makes everything seem so easy, without providing any credentials or deeper explanation to justify his statements. His comment makes it sounds like we have a dedicated cache area in memory which stores all in-match data, and CCP just "forgot" to insert the line "clear cache" in the code.
Memory leaks (which is what we actually are taking about) are not simple, and definitely not easy to fix. Basically the code allocates memory and does not free it after use. This memory can not be used since it it occupied, but will never get cleared. After a while less and less memory is available, which results in the HDD swapping you describe in your reply.
The problem is, the code can't (easily) judge which memory is garbage and what is vital for the game. The reason a system reset works before a PC game is that "all" memory is wiped (the console is turned off). In this state it does not matter what is useful memory and what is not.
TDLR: There is not magical cache which CCP could just clear in-between games. It simply does not work like that. Sure, you can implement a garbage collector which clears unused memory, but they are quite resource intensive as well.
The best way is to plug the leaks. But as stated earlier, that is definitely simpler said than done. |

So interesting that not long after this post I encountered quite a few new players that have NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
I gave as much advice as my thumbs could type on a DS3 and sent them mail directing them to the Forums new player section.
When I was in a squad with them, they were getting murdered/redlined and generally stomped - by vets - and I was actually getting worried about them quitting.
What sucks is that the Power core update was awesome but it does not seem to have improved performance in a meaningful way.
There was an acknowledgment that the maps themselves are a problem because of how they are randomly generated. I'm not a IT person but I imagine changing/updating this to a different map system would be like gutting a house and putting in all new flooring and walls. I don't think they have the manpower to do it.
The Devs don't usually respond to these types of threads because I don't think it helps. They have acknowledged most of these issues in other threads. Also I read somewhere FRAME is on vacation and Rattati has taken some time off. ( He posted that he was at a wedding) |

I don't see you providing any suggestions =ƒÿÆ The OP believes that these fixes are so simple, but they are not. CCP doesn't even have the resources for things like map polishing. Even if they did it would take a long time. CCP has already tried to fix the maps several times. Just saying "fix the hills" is not an idea that nobody has thought of.

This thread has me utterly baffled. There are a few categories of statements in the OP: Debatable or just plain wrong, wishful thinking (would definitely be nice, but high resource investment to fix), and ones where things just don't work that way. Let's break it down.
Debatable or just plain wrong:
bear90211 wrote: 1. Academy Reworking - Tiered system.
6. *NEW (Addition from old topic) -

1 is an interesting idea, but deserves its own thread for discussion. Similarly with 6A.
6B, 7B, and 7D are just way too small to deserve dev time. It's difficult to simplify the market any farther than it has given the huge quantity of items in it. The "Get AUR" comment in particular I understand - it's painful if you accidentally push it. But they need to have it there to increase sales, so it's almost certainly not going away.
7E isn't explained very clearly. I think you have an idea here, but you'd need to write it out more clearly. Right now what I can see out of it doesn't look like it clearly consults the ongoing debate over vehicle problems.
It doesn't work like that (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FFG1NqKzCg):
bear90211 wrote: 2. Implement an Auto Cache Clearer for after ever battle.

4. Cut off the map 500M out from the redline on both sides ( The map goes on for around 7K in some directions, all sockets loaded if you get a mini DC and get to roam, I did once.)
5. Try to simplify the amount of polygons, smoothing out the map, and recreating hills to be less steep. (This WILL take some time, and a few coders, but it IS doable with the DUST budget & profit currently.)
In all of these cases there's a fundamental misunderstanding of how these systems work. I'll just be short about it, since Regis has done a pretty thorough job earlier: As a professional programmer, I can tell you that 2 and 5 both contain words related to how the game works, but overall have literally zero meaning. Those words put together in that order don't actually mean anything. Additionally, if 3 or 4 actually represented easily implemented savings they would have been done ages ago.
Wishful thinking:
bear90211 wrote: C. Trading menu like Defiance, Runescape or... well you get what i'm talking about.
This would obviously be nice, and exists in other games. It'll take nontrivial dev work though, and who knows with Dust's team when they're going to have the opportunity to move this kind of thing into a patch?
Overall the original post holds very little actionable content.
