This is REALLY dumb move. Can I advice that you do like you do in EVE instead. DON'T SHOW EMAILS OLDER THAN 30 DAYS! At least until you can code your things to actually show them.
EVE only shows you X number of mails back in time, but they're all still saved (hopefully until you guys can code to show them all to us).
Deleting the mails is the wrong way to go. Please rethink and simply limit to 30 days without deleting until you can fix it.

I have never deleted my mails, ever. Mainly because I don't want to, but also because if I tried scrolling down to the bottom I'd die of old age from it taking so long to load. I'd much prefer Chribba's idea.

If you click on one of those mails you can hit "Delete All" and get rid of them all at once.
I wiped out all my mails and Contacts and saw an immediate performance increase during gameplay. Less stutters and higher framerates.

A few bytes here, a few bytes there, a few bytes everywhere. It all adds up, thus is the phenomenon of accumulation and when it's all loaded at the same time, it causes problems if there isn't enough room.

Because the people that originally implemented these things thought it would be a good idea to be able to check your mail in the middle of a match. Or in three other words, asinine decision making.

I deleted all of mine, to take advantage of the supposed performance increases (send to be working btw). As much as I enjoyed them and the fun/scathing responses I sent., I get more all the time, so it's not a big loss. I was more sad to see the small minority of positive mails and GGs go.

There's a very, very simple solution: Allow locking of messages. This prevents messages with the lock toggled on from being deleted until the lock is toggled off. It's the same kind of thing they've had for texts in phones for years. Simple, effective, and it puts control in the hands of the user.

My (and pretty much everybody's) history in New Eden is stored in the mail.
I am very happy dropping a frame or two if I can preserve the history of who I've met and what we've accomplished together.
We know where the "Delete all mail," button is. We would have pushed it a long time ago if it was something we wanted to do.
Putting this another way: I don't need CCP "helping me out" by going into my room when I'm away and tidying up by burning all my old love-letters.  |

Aren't these memory problems client-side? If somebody wants to willingly slow their client by locking a lot of messages then they should be able to, I think.
