The mails will still be on TQ. So does this mean we can actually access our mails from MQ, just not in battle, or? If it's that, well done. If not, what do you even mean? Are they just deleted for all intents and purposes as opposed to completely deleted? While we will need a dev to get a proper confirmation on this, I will say I'm pretty confident we won't have access to the mail while in the MQ, ...at least for now.
To use my love-letter example from before, this is like instead of CCP burning them, they are stuffing the letters in a safe we can't open and promising to send us the combination at a later date.
Our mail being inaccessibly-archived is a thousand times better than being outright deleted, but it's also a thousand times worse than if we had actual access to it.
If I may add to my earlier point, our mail isn't only about our records of our friends and our accomplishments (Even though that alone is more than enough reason to preserve them.), for many, many players there is incredibly important utilitarian info kept there. How many CEOs/directors/leaders have vital contact, logistical, diplomatic, etcetc. stored in mails they've received? I personally know that with every new member to join D-Uni, Kevall sends them the "Welcome Packet"; a few dozen mails of guides and FAQs on Dust. Basically the game's missing tutorial! Which will be archived away after 30 days.
Now we have to be honest here, CCP Shanghai is trapped between a rock and a hard place. They have to up Dust's performance, and mail seems to be one of the notable resource hogs. But the code that is causing the issue seems hard to solve right now, and dev resources are very limited. Archiving the mail is a quick, workable solution.
But many players love their mail!
Do we remove the "feature" of players-keep-all-their-mail so that we gain the "feature" of increased-performance? Or do we try and have both, but at the cost of an unknowable amount of man-days; thus pushing back the release of roadmap items?
It's a tough call. :\
I adamantly don't want our mail deleted. And I really, really don't want it inaccessibly-archived. But if there is no quick way to resolve the performance issues, a temporary archiving may be the right call.
That said though, at minimum can we make this optional for players? I have a hard time seeing how,
Quote:IF (FLAG "achivePlayerMail" = TRUE) THEN do.archive() ELSE BREAK -takes more than one collective man-day to write and test.
Going by this thread, every CPM member whose spoken up about mail deletion/archiving has been against it; as are many prominent members of the community. It's worth considering the pros and cons of how we move forward on this. |
