If somebody wants to willingly slow their client by locking a lot of messages then they should be able to, I think.
In my case, despite a significant amount of mail, my PS3 has never had particularly noticeable frame rate issues with DUST.
But I'm going to lose my mail anyways.

If somebody wants to willingly slow their client by locking a lot of messages then they should be able to, I think. Yeah, the memory problems are all client side. Really it's not the messages themselves, it's the combination of everything. They really don't need to delete them, they just need to not have them loaded into memory after you leave your MQ. Nobody cares about the performance of their fat asses sitting in the MQ; what they care about is the performance experienced during a match. Which of course that's not to say that removing mail from the equation will have much of an impact unless the person has an metric ass-ton of mails but it is still one less thing adding to the burden.

At least from the last thing I recall reading from Rattati in regards to it (can't remember where that is at the moment).

There shouldn't really be any justifiable reason to delete mail off of TQ (the server). Mail has never been deleted for EVE, where characters may be as much as twelve years old at this point.

Well thing is between most folks I post to and this person is that if I subject enough reasoning over time they eventually take another look at their own stance reconsider their values and then assert or reassert their position with a formulated response that would be something more tangibly digestible when I consider the options and bring them to ccp for community feedback.
The person in question is immune to this method and concretes their opinions before the they finish mixing the concrete up.
As for who? don't have to look far.

There's a hundred people locked in a room with me. The lights go out and one of them kills another before the lights come back on. I don't have to look far to find the killer and I can point the finger at whoever I want; but I'm no closer to knowing who the killer is.
And what of their reason, did you omit it because of some NDA bullshit or did they simply not give it?

This is definitely one of those things I wish had been a priority from the get-go. As it is, DUST and EVE websites use very similar login code, to the point you could "accidentally" log into the EVE website with a DUST account if you knew what you were doing.
A lot of DUST's social aspects would hugely benefit from the ability to communicate away from the PS3. I've used an EVE account for this extensively in the past, but that's kinda a pain, and mail sent to your DUST account is non-existent until you get home.

well if we take the room of a 100 folks in it with one killer striking at every time the light goes off. (actually this hearkens back to the blue-man room show riddle; a reality TV show where the person not blue is to walk out when the lights are turned off) anyways the killer knows I know hes the killer.
So I have the choice of outing him giving him no room for redemption. He can out himself and let him fully explain why he's killing. Or I can keep silent and let him kill everyone and watch everyone else tear themselves apart trying to figure out the killer...]
hmm tough choice.

I also rather an instant messenger feature that clears itself at end of session rather than using the mail system to tell people to get out of a match for something else.

I'm sure Chribba realises that. What he's probably referring to is that this is a hideously poor way of doing it in the first place and even then, it shouldn't be a major contributing factor.

Exactly. Right now, difficulty seeing chat notifications in match ensures that everyone is in like an echo chamber for 10-30 minutes at a time. It's really hard to meet up with friends if they have no way to contact you. Mail notification is right now the ONLY way to get someone's attention for critical things like a Planetary Conquest match needing extra people or whatever else someone might urgently need.
Even I don't understand what the heck IWS is saying, but I think he means me, so if it is, he should just say what he wants to say, IMHO.
FYI: I've been actively advocating for not deleting people's mail since this discussion was first floated.

The rest of his comment is in line with what you're saying though but that's irrelevant to what I said. I'm very well aware of that if you have tons of mail it can make up a lot of data. I'll just randomly do some math using my EVE stats.
During 2014 I received 2505 mails and sent 890, so all in all there was 3395 mails in my inbox (only counting 2014 and not previous years).
An EVE mail can max contain 10,000 characters (not going to include overhead bytes like subject, to/from since you'd rarely use up all 10,000 chars for every mail anyway).
So that's 32.4MB worth of mails in my EVE mailbox, is that a lot or not accumulation-wise? In EVE they don't let me scroll back more than about a month (BUT that is due to the number of mails rather than the size). So there's no reason they could not simply do the same in DUST rather than opting for the delete route, that's why I didn't really bother to dig into accumulation since it's (imo?) not the problem.
Soraya Xel wrote:FYI: I've been actively advocating for not deleting people's mail since this discussion was first floated. Please keep fighting for that, deleting is one of the stupidest route to resolve this apparent performance issue. That should be the absolute last resort.

The DUST text entry box limits you to MUCH less than that, as well, so barring huge reply chains or mail sent from EVE, it's pretty unlikely for you to use anywhere near as much mail.

The mails will still be on TQ. So hopefully when you guys have had a chance to look closer to the mails and performance there's a chance for those to be "re-enabled" so that we can see them again? Seeing as "them being on TQ" in the sense that they are available EVE side doesn't really help us reading them from DUST (for non-corpmails that are private merc mails) - or until CREST allows us to export them?
If so, this is better news that they're not completely gone, even though I am unable to do anything with them.
