Why would a futuristic military use them? Why would the disadvantages of large blades be overcome and why would someone in the future want to use a sword? A knife is understandable, its small, non-cumbersome, and quiet, but swords are big, bulky, and hard to use in confined quarters where you would want to actually have a melee weapon. In Dust people take a lot of punishment before succumbing to the opposition. Right now the U.S.A is closing in on exoskeleton technology with testing going on the last few years in special forces. In a few decades we will most likely see highly armored personnel who will be almost invulnerable to modern small arms. If one day two armies meet and both are using exoskeletons with the same level of protection then they may not be able to fight each other with firearms. In the time it takes to create sufficiently powerful firearms, armies may come to rely heavily on melee weapons if for a short time. Even when firearms catch up melee weapons will most likely continue to fulfill a role in CQC. Put your flags up in the sky. And wave them side to side. Show the world where you're from. Its bulkier, less useful in CQC than a knife. If its not in CQC, it would be better to use a gun as you pointed out. I just don't see the point other than "it would be cool because space katanas" in which case I go play Warframe because...ninjas. And no we wouldn't be forced to use melee weapons because we already have guns in Dust that get the job done. You don't need to reload a sword. You will seldom kill a target with one round in CQC, but are very likely to down an opponent with one strike from a large blade. In Dust where you can fight within 15 meters, unload 70 rounds and still not kill an opponent having a meter long blade can come in handie. Put your flags up in the sky. And wave them side to side. At 0-5 meter range, we already have Nova Knives. At 5-15 meters, we already have shotguns. At 15+, we have... everything else. They'd serve no purpose as a sidearm, except possibly being a racial variant to Nova Knives, with some sort of huge drawback so they didn't just replace them entirely. They'd serve no purpose as light weapons, since... why not just use a shotgun at that range? They'd serve no purpose as a heavy weapon, because... come on.

Very true, I would imagine something more like a loaded spear. It would most likely need a cartridge to have the spear point be launched forward and would then be forcefully inserted through the oponents armor. The spear point would always remain attached to the spear and would only move forward. Though if exoskeletons were powerful enough and the spear points sharp enough then it is possible that no cartridge would be needed and instead only the power of the exoskeleton would be necessary to break through another person's armor. Dust could justify it similarly, maybe melee weapons become extra effective against both shields and armor. I want cool melee weapons which are viable. However, this is still a futuristic warfare game, so even though It'd be great to see a few people run around with melee weapons, I'd like them to be hard enough to use that they remain a very small niche of specialized players using them regularly. Also, designing a suit especially for melee would be necessary to use melee really effectively. They'd be more for style than anything. Also, having a BLOCK feature with L1 would be an awesome feature for sword duels Who cares what some sniper has to say
