Pokey Dravon wrote:I'm kind of curious, modern military doesn't use anything beyond a knife or even a short bayonet (which is typically just a knife). Why would a futuristic military use them? Swords aren't used anymore because people get killed at range before they can use them. In Dust people take a lot of punishment before succumbing to the opposition.
Right now the U.S.A is closing in on exoskeleton technology with testing going on the last few years in special forces. In a few decades we will most likely see highly armored personnel who will be almost invulnerable to modern small arms. If one day two armies meet and both are using exoskeletons with the same level of protection then they may not be able to fight each other with firearms. In the time it takes to create sufficiently powerful firearms, armies may come to rely heavily on melee weapons if for a short time. Even when firearms catch up melee weapons will most likely continue to fulfill a role in CQC.

Pokey Dravon wrote:You misunderstand. Why would someone use a sword over a knife? Its bulkier, less useful in CQC than a knife. If its not in CQC, it would be better to use a gun as you pointed out. I just don't see the point other than "it would be cool because space katanas" in which case I go play Warframe because...ninjas.
And no we wouldn't be forced to use melee weapons because we already have guns in Dust that get the job done. Swords have more range than Knives.

And no we wouldn't be forced to use melee weapons because we already have guns in Dust that get the job done. Swords have more range than Knives. But if you want more range...why not use a gun? You don't need to reload a sword. You will seldom kill a target with one round in CQC, but are very likely to down an opponent with one strike from a large blade.
In Dust where you can fight within 15 meters, unload 70 rounds and still not kill an opponent having a meter long blade can come in handie.

Except the knife has like....2.5 m range as it is?
While being about 15 inches big themselves.
A Nova Sword would have almost 5m of range (compensating for dashing just like the Nova Knives extended range).

No form of armour equippable by humans will be impervious to small arms fire. In the highly unlikely case that it is (and a great deal we know about physics and chemistry is promptly turned upside down), it is highly unlikely that a sword will punch through. Very true, I would imagine something more like a loaded spear.
It would most likely need a cartridge to have the spear point be launched forward and would then be forcefully inserted through the oponents armor. The spear point would always remain attached to the spear and would only move forward. Though if exoskeletons were powerful enough and the spear points sharp enough then it is possible that no cartridge would be needed and instead only the power of the exoskeleton would be necessary to break through another person's armor.

This would make sword duels pretty fun.
Also, each race and suit type would behave differently.
Scouts: fast weak attacks, heavies: slow powerful attacks etc.
This would also finally be a very good use for stamina.
The more I think of this, the more I want it! Duels? No.
I think it should continue to be who ever happens to get struck gets struck. You both see each other and try to feint until one of you messes up and gets hit. I don't think CCP needs to put any complicated mechanics in.

Second, you only have extra range because you can't run and charge.

There is a fine line between something that is really great because of what people accomplish with it versus something that is great by design and is just fluff in practice.
Nova Knives are great because at a glance they are unimpressive. They are the proverbial knife you don't bring to the gun fight. When you see people accomplish work with Nova Knives it can be impressive.
Nova Sword: something made just to look cool, would just be mass used by new players for esthetics and would ultimately be seen as a joke. And anything with the power of Nova Knives + more range would be overpowered and you'd see it everywhere.
Is that really what we want in Dust? Half the team running around with lightsabers? No one is the hero in this game, everyone is a mercenary. I'm not a Nova Knife specialist. I currently use Nova Knives as a secondary on my Gallante Assault. I don't think it would be a joke I think it would actually be quite useful.
