I'm kind of curious, modern military doesn't use anything beyond a knife or even a short bayonet (which is typically just a knife). Why would a futuristic military use them? Why would the disadvantages of large blades be overcome and why would someone in the future want to use a sword? A knife is understandable, its small, non-cumbersome, and quiet, but swords are big, bulky, and hard to use in confined quarters where you would want to actually have a melee weapon. So why would someone use this?

You misunderstand. Why would someone use a sword over a knife? Its bulkier, less useful in CQC than a knife. If its not in CQC, it would be better to use a gun as you pointed out. I just don't see the point other than "it would be cool because space katanas" in which case I go play Warframe because...ninjas.
And no we wouldn't be forced to use melee weapons because we already have guns in Dust that get the job done.

You don't need to reload a sword. You will seldom kill a target with one round in CQC, but are very likely to down an opponent with one strike from a large blade. In Dust where you can fight within 15 meters, unload 70 rounds and still not kill an opponent having a meter long blade can come in handie.
Except the knife has like....2.5 m range as it is?

That's even less of a reason to use a sword since you could put a knife in your light weapon slot but you cant put a sword in a sidearm slot.
