The monetization has probably also stemmed from the calls of players for more items, and realizing that some people have billions of Isk, they could easily spam it if it was in game. As a result, it was made Aurum. Not agressive, just going with the community and making everyone happy

I have a crazier theory.
On the PS4 nonF2P games require Psplus to play online (sony moneygrubbing).
F2P games don't,which means the game company themselves pay for the players in hopes they spend enough to turn a profit.
CCP through Dust 514 might be trying to save up enough money to pay off sony for a few months, and make the leap to PS4.
"Why not keep the name Dust 514,why change it?" On the PSN store there's already a game called Dust for the PS4,and i'm sure CCP doesn't want their game associated with it.

Winning matches 100% doesn't matter in this game. Even in FW, winning doesn't matter. ISK only matters, the whole purpose, like EvE, is wider your profit margin. PC and pubs don't matter, because districts net zero ISK now, so playing PC doesn't matter, and pubs pay you no matter how had you do.
Change you old definition of what winning means. Because in DUST514, winning means profit.
Pay... to... win. Where does it say that the goal and concept of Dust is the make ISK? I thought it was about making an impact and taking control of territories like the PC Districts? Having more ISK doesn't mean I'm guaranteed to win a FW battle. Again, your old definition of winning. You're a mercenary. What does a mercenary do?? Make money. The endgame broke when ISK generation was stopped. And truth is, 9/10, the team that spends the most ISK wins the match(assuming they are putting forth an effort to win, not just be non participants). Even FW rewards you for losing. And it still takes ISK to play it. Change your thinking man. All EvE centers around generating ISK. DUST is and always will be pay to win.
Sure, I'll keep that in mind next time I one hit kill a tanked up commando sniping on a hill with a pair of nova knives and cost him a highly expensive suit even though he won the match.
In all seriousness, if gaining isk was the end game simply because I'm a mercenary, then I won the game years ago. Eve Online players are mainly privateers first and foremost yet their end game is not to make money but rather to gain control of the player run economy. He who controls the spice controls the universe.
Only a short sighted mercenary goes for money and nothing else. A real mercenary makes sure to get rid of corporate competition so he or she can have a better chance of monopolizing on the isk.

It is about time CCP did something to really temp players to buy AUR. I would say Dust has been a baptism by fire in developing an FPS but also in designing a successful FTP model that really pulls in some money. Both of which have been sorely lacking until recently.

Well, pulling in money without actually going into pay to win. I use to think paid respecs were pay to win but then remembered that skill points don't guarantee a won match.

yeah really. AFAIK, dust 514 is no kickstarter thing. And a CPM pretty much saying "buy stuff if you like it or no game for you" is really shocking imo. Especially in the light of what this year has brought on this player base, or what remains of it, monetizing before showing any kind of real transparency on what the future holds, something definite, is imo more than insulting to the ppl who still have a bit of trust.

Zatara, that whole tirade is not necessary. And this is the CPM? Sounds like a child. Didn't think you were the sensitive type Michael.
What I got from that "tirade" as you put it:
Rattati has awesome ideas that he would like to implement which can be done if the game becomes more viable financially. He has relayed these ideas to CPM who are frustrated by a community that think they are getting either robbed or milked before a shut down instead of seeing the potentially positive aspects to further development through AUR sale funding.
If that is what you are saying Zatara, thank you for doing so. I am eager to see what these ideas are. If I am off the mark altogether, I can only cite a very busy work life and a terrible lack of sleep.

Because money. Why the suddenness? That is the real kicker. There are a few possibilities:
1. CCP lost quite a bit of cash last year and from rumors I have heard/read this year hasn't been much better. They can't really hope to get the kind of instant bump is cash from EVE players other than offering a sale of PLEX (which hurts them later) so getting it from DUST makes sense.
2. Pyrex's tinfoil is that CCP is possibly going to be sold. No evidence with it but show that you are making a whole bunch of money and see if you can get potential buyers.
3. Money for Legion development, as well as Valkyrie. For a relatively small company to be making two extremely ambitious games (Legion looking for that EVE link and Valkyrie being OR based) requires a lot of resources that they might not necessarily have. So get money to get the resources.
4. CCP probably saw just how much money they made off of Quafe suits and realized that the fanbase was willing to spend. If people are willing to spend, you go hard for it.
5. Tinfoil again. DUST is dying. "We are not going to get any of the credit we wanted for linking DUST with EVE. Might as well squeeze the last bit of toothpaste from the tube before discarding it."
6. It could be they are experimenting with Legion monitization. "People are willing to buy skins. Add that to the list."
7. They are reworking their model. If the 750k stays and Active Boosters move towards ONLY letting you cap faster with the logic being most people won't cap as it will take quite a long time, the game moves more away from Pay to Win.
"This is B.S! This is B.S! I paid money! Cash money, dollars money, cash money!"

It's amazing to even consider CCP counting on players to rebuild their game. They had money, they invested, they developed, they failed. Many reasons to that, and it's not really the fault of those in charge now. But that doesnt change anything to the problem here. The one who is SELLING something is CCP.

I mean, not at all..i'm not saying that there won't be a game if you don't buy things. But certainly there is a cause and effect between the game producing comfortable levels of revenue that allow for patches...vs the hotfix cycles of balance we were limited to before.
I am in agreeance that everyone needs to be made aware of CCP's 6 and 12 month plans, but we already know dust isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
They need to share an updated roadmap, and I am confident that they soon will based off of our conversations.
In the mean time...I can't tell you what's going on behind the iron curtain, but suffice it to say attempting to increase monetization is something they should have been doing long ago. It's not some naked cash grab so they can screw you.
If you buy enough ****...it will result in us having more dust514 console content.
Support the game.
I mean, I was there at fanfest on my own dime and watched Rouge Wedding happen.
I wandered depressed and dejected around fanfest screaming "LASER FOCUSED ON PS3 DEVELOPMENT"
I called out Dev's on why they had nothing to share..asked them wtf why is it acceptable to have failed to plan further than 1.8
And I have not forgotten.
And yet, in my FoV I am now confident in Dust's future so long as people continue to support it.
Ratatti was given a big mess and yet here I am contemplating a 1.10.
Forgive me if that sounds naive, petulant, or w/e else you perceive but the language is a response to fin foil.
Sure, are you justified in tin foiling because you have no answer and you've been burned before...i'm not here to debate you.

I remember the original potential back in beta too, and yes CCP did bugger this game up for quite a while but that does seem to have changed with the updates and communication by the current Dust team
Question for you and other vets: If what we have now was released as Uprising 1.0, how would you feel about Dust and would you recommend it to others.
Holding onto the past is never a good thing and holding the current Dust team accountable for the previous teams wrongs is like blaming your current partner for your ex's faults. I would like to point out that this community has been pretty ducking terrible and should not be absolved of partial blame for the hole we (yes "we", CCP, CPM and the community) are slowly climbing out of.

I'm not about to speculate beyond the "CCP is a business so they need to make money" reason, but I will say that monetization of the game was one of the many things they had failed to implement correctly in this game. You know the devs had failed when they couldn't even monetize the game right. As rattati and crew have fixed many of the problems with the game, they have finally started to do some work to fix the monetization of it.
Are they milking us before a shut down, prepping for legion, justifying legion, etc? Can't say for sure until we see how the future plays out. |
